I have it on good authority that the commercial 45 for "Don't Come Around Here No More" by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers was commercially released in both a 4:19 (which I have) and a 5:02 version. Anybody here have the longer 45 (which is apparently the LP version)?

I have also heard that the record was released with the two different times...mine is the shorter one.

Bringing up another old thread...my 45 is also the shorter version. I've been looking for the longer version for quite a while but never seen it. I assume the longer version wasn't pressed in great quantities and is probably the much rarer of the two.
Anyone have any additional info?

Just got back from a week in LA, and during my stay I ran across a good used record store. In searching through the 45s, I found Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More" with a 5:06 timing listed on the label, so I now have the longer verison.
The number is:
MC-16917R-PL3 SLM 9170
Hope this info is useful.

Thanks for the update torcan! I knew that longer version had to be out there somewhere.

Haven't asked one of these in awhile, so I will now. Is the 45 extractable from the LP?
And I know well the trip to LA Ian spoke of--I was on the same trip! :)

Doug and Ian - Welcome back...
Don't worry, Doug. I've asked about a few 45 recreations myself in the last week or so, in your absence. :)

I have the 5:02 version of Tom Petty's song from his Greatest Hits collection and am also interested in how to recreate the 4:19 version.

That trip to L.A. Ian and I were on was two years ago. Does seem like yesterday, though. He and I were with some friends from another forum (this one devoted to the world of game shows). You can spot Ian and myself in the audience of The Price Is Right in the episode that aired 10/5/06.
Last time I was away was in February, when I went to Vegas. I contributed mightily to the Nevada economy.
And now that I've taken it completely off-topic, I'll attempt to bring it back. You mean you don't already have the 45 of this, John? :)

Can't believe it's been two years...time flies. That was a perfect trip for me...two of my biggest loves...game shows and vinyl records!
Well...almost perfect. I didn't get to "come on down". Hopefully next time!

Can anybody list the edit points for Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More" 7" single?
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: If you believe the music video, there is one edit from 3:02 to 3:14 on the downbeat and word "come," and then an early fade (although the music video runs longer and ends abruptly with a sound effect).
I can hear a change in the sound of the backup instruments at the edit, but the music video sounds the same way.
Can anyone with the 7" single confirm this is correct for the "short" version?

I think the short 45 version also chops off the first nine seconds or so from
the full version. I only have an mp3 rip so can't confirm it's official.

I compared the promo 45 (MCA 52496) to the original
Greatest Hits CD and found two cuts and an early fade:
1. Cut from 0:00.5 to 0:09.5. This keeps the first
beat of the song (i.e., the pickup on beat 4), and
removes three bars.
2. Cut from 3:05 to 3:17. This removes four bars of
the keyboard solo. The edit is on the fourth beat of
the measure, not on a vocal.
3. Fade is from roughly 4:30 to 4:43.
In the final edit, you'll have cuts at 0:00.5, and
2:56. Fade runs from 4:10 to 4:21.
