Bill, couple questions. Are these fold downs or true mono mixes? And, do they run the true length of the 45's?

Most of these tracks were probably mixed to mono first and then stereo mixes were made for stereo LPs. So I doubt any are fold downs. Solitary Man is a different take on the mono 45 and LP version than the stereo version, there are more differences. I don't have all of the Bang 45s so I'm not sure about the length.

I previewed some tracks on Rhapsody. Did notice that "Shilo" was the 1st 45 version, not the hit 45 version.

Can anyone who has acquired the Neil Diamond Bang Years CD confirm of it contains the correct hit version of "Do It"? Up to this point, the song's lone domestic CD appearance is a remix, according to the database.

Never was aware there was a remix of "Do It", but with his Bang material anything's possible. The 45 is a "stretch" version of what appeared on any vinyl album with a repeated verse that was an obvious splice job. The mix on the one vinyl album I have of this song is pretty muddy so mix differences are hard to pick out.

Was the 1st 45 version the same as what's on the "Just For You" album? That album version is very different than what was released as a 45 in 1970.

No it's not the 1970 remix/extention of Do It, it's the original shorter verson from "The Feel of Neil Diamond" LP. Many of the Neil Diamond singles released by Bang after 1968 were "banged up", with extra instrumentation added and/or alternate takes used. The 1970 mix of "Do It" hasn't appeared on CD, some of the extra instruments are on the CD "Early Classics", and that CD uses the extention trick of repeating part of the song to make it longer, but the bongos are missing so it's not the true single version.

Thank you for the detailed explanations, Hykker and Bill.

So if I understand correctly, the LP version appearing on the Bang Years CD can be replicated to match the 45 version by copying and splicing the one verse in question?

You'd get the single length but you'd be missing the overdubs that were added in 1970. More drums, bongos, etc were added for the 1970 single. There is no way to replicate the 45 from a CD source that I'm aware of.

I appreciate you helping to sort all this out, Bill, but if I may ask one more question on the issue just to make sure I have everything straight (this'll be my last one, I promise!)... The version of "Do It" on Neil Diamond's Early Classics CD is currently classified as a "remix" in the database, so would it technically be more accurate to describe it as the "45 version but missing a percussion overdub"?

No it's a remix done from Bang multi tracks, it's docummented here:
