I did not see a previous thread on the 1970 hit "As the Years Go By" by Mashmakhan.

The database has several entries for this song, including "Mashmakhan/The Family," which is a back-to-back collection of 2 early 1970s Mashmakhan albums, one of which being the parent album of "As the Years Go By." So, the version of the song on that album obviously is the correct 1970 version, running 3:03.

The database has a few other entries (all related to a CD called "Rock Artifacts, Vol. 1") that contain a 3:44 "neither" version.

I've been hunting high and low for this song. The "Mashmakhan/The Family" CD is OOP and ridiculously expensive. The song "As the Years Go By," however, also appears on a handful of V/A Compilation import CDs, including the Canadian "Oh What a Feeling" series. The problem is that it appears that every version of "As the Years Go By" that appears on any of these import CDs is also this 3:44 version (also sometimes listed at 3:48).

So, my questions are:

(1) What is this 3:44 version? Where did it come from? And why is everyone using it?; and

(2) does anyone know if there is any import CD (or any CD other than "Mashmakhan/The Family") that contains the correct 3:03 version?

Thank you for the help.

For much of the Rock Artifacts series producer Bob Irwin remixed songs from the original multi tracks. If there was a longer fade or extra music available sometimes it would be included, which may be the case here.

It's also not as compressed on the 3:44 version.

my source for the correct 3:03 version is the 1991 Canada 2-CD "The Best
Of Canadian Rock" on PolyTel. I also have a clean mono 45 mix dubbed from
a 45.   amazon has it used at http://www.amazon.com/Best-Canadian-
Rock-Various-artists/dp/B000P739OC

Interesting that the single was mono in their native Canada...the U.S. 45 is stereo.

This is interesting..... I've checked itunes for this song probably 1,000 times, always searching by the artist name "Mashmakhan" and coming up empty. Well, after creating this thread, I tried again, except searching by the title of the song without the artist name.

This song is actually on iTunes, running the correct 3:04, on a digital album called "Canadian Rock Classics," except the artist name is misspelled as "Mashmakan" (without the second "h"). Never occurred to me to check for misspellings.

I bought it and compared it to the 45 and it is the correct version. Sounds good too.
