my commercial 45 for the left banke song "walk away renee" issued as smash 2041 states the run time on the label as 2:39 but actually runs 2:38 and is faster than all the db entries running in the area of 2:41-2:42 in length....this 45 run time info s/b added to the db....

Our commercial 45 states a time of (2:39). The deadwax info: YW 38559 1 3. (The 1 has a big X over it, like it's crossed out).

ed, does the 45 contain reverb on the vocals? Most of my stereo
versions are rather dry, however I have one that comes from the ACE
import CD "Chartbusters USA Vol. 1" (perhaps the same mix as Pat
states "remixed" for from the CD "There's Gonna Be A Storm") which
has a lot of reverb.

Not sure I'd use "dry", but any stereo versions I've heard of
this song sound rather thin compared to the single,
especially noticeable on the intro.
Not sure if the stereo's a different take or if it's just
mixed/produced differently.

I recently analyzed this 45. It is a dedicated mono mix
and contains reverb+echo that is not in the LP mix. As
Ed mentioned, the 45 is pitched much faster.
The remix that is on "There's Gonna Be A Storm" is
actually closer to the 45 than the original stereo mix.
However no stereo mix can be made to match the 45 because
there are also additional vocal overdubs in the choruses.
At first I thought it was the extra reverb but when
playing them in sync the added background vocals jump
right out. The whole group did another pass of harmony
overdubs. Those overdubs gave a "full" sound to the
chorus you don't get in the stereo.
[Edit: i should note the reverb/echo on the 45 vocals is
not typical of the time, it sounds more like they are in
a small room, but with the door opened and echo in the
hallway. I think that's what they were going for in the
remixed version but they didn't quite get it]

So Ace didn't use the mono mix either on the Chartbusters USA Vol. 1 disc? So is the unique hit mono mix with the vocal overdubs still MIA?

Yes, it is MIA. Only on 45 RPM singles.

And it is likely to never see a CD release, ever. Whoever
represents the band has been in legal disputes with
Universal for years now, hence neither of their hits have
appeared on any CD V/A comps in many years.
Universal does retain the right to keep their best-of
"There's Gonna Be A Storm" in print in all digital forms
though.
If they ever do settle one might hope for some sort of
newly-compiled digital anthology with single version
bonus tracks and such. But can't hope for anything til
their catalog is out of lock-down.

That's too bad, the mixes of "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina" from
"There's Gonna Be a Storm" have always sounded "wrong" to my ears.

Sundazed is reissuing one of their albums
on vinyl, though from the stereo masters.

Is the mono album version identical to the 45 or is it a fold down of the
stereo version?

That I don't know. Had the mono LP but the copies I had
were all 2/6 matrices, which meant Stereo discs in mono
jackets during the famous 1966 Mercury/Philips Stereo
single inventory test. Which meant for all 3 so called
mono LP copies I've had (including one beat to death
promo) that all of them were Stereo discs inside. In that
era, mono and stereo discs on Mercury/Philips were
randomly mixed mono and stereo in mono jackets. Sometimes
you'd even get one side mono, the other Stereo. Some
history for you. Mercury was seeing if mono customers
would accept Stereo discs, and if so, planned on
discontinuing mono LP discs.
