Ed, Old Town 1047 was the early 1958 Top 40 hit, with the flip "Walking
In The Rain"; 7 more Robert & Johnny stiff 45s followed. The next one, Old
Town 1086, was released right on the 1960/61 cusp, with the flip, "In The
Rain". (That should be your 45's flip.) This later 45 issue of "We Belong
Together" did "Bubble Under" in 1/61. My latest Whitburn book says
"reissue" next to the 1086 release. Two things to note: 1) In that era, a
good many non-charting and/or non-smash hit 45s first released in the
1957-1960 era got "second life" during 1961 - 63 (Shirelles-"Dedicated
To The One I Love"/Capris-"There's A Moon Out Tonight"/Rebels-"Wild
Weekend" were 3 Top 10 examples of this.) 2) Simply as a cost-cutting
move, many labels would place a former "A" or "B" side as the intended "B"
side of a later single. That's actually how "The Twist" had its second #1 hit
chart run; The company pressed new copies of the Parkway 811 45 (the
1960 B-side was "Toot"). It was intended to just be the "B" side of his
then-new 45/A-side, "Twistin' U.S.A." . But radio unexpectedly opted to
bypass "U.S.A.", and started spinning the old #1 hit again. I don't know
what category your 45 falls under, though. I'm almost positive that your
1086 Robert & Johnny 45 is the same recording as 1047 was, however. Do
you have deadwax info? If so, I'll try to pull my 45 for you ASAP to
compare.
