Subject: List of mono and Stereo 45s - 1973
Date Posted: 10 February 2012 at 12:42am
The following is a list of every single that peaked on the Billboard Top 40 chart in 1973 (based on Joel Whitburn's Pop Annual 1955-1999 publication) and also includes the Top 40 hits Pat has included in the database based a composite of other music charts. Through a collaborative effort with my partner-in-crime Jim (a.k.a. "jimct") and some valuable assistance from KentT, Paul Haney, and Yah Shure, we've made our best effort to determine whether the corresponding commercial 45 release for each single was issued in mono or stereo. This list only accounts for original 45 releases and not later re-issues.

I have posted a mono/stereo 45 list for each year from 1968-1975 (see links below) and hope forum members and fellow music collectors will find these lists to be a useful reference guide. I also highly encourage anyone to let me know if there are any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions so that I can make the necessary corrections.

Scoreboard update...

Here are the percentages (rounded to the nearest tenth) of Top 40 commercial 45s issued in stereo by year. 1973 clearly saw an explosive increase of stereo 45 releases:

1973: 74.8%
1972: 51.9%
1971: 35.7%
1970: 26.9%
1969: 19.1%
1968: 3.1%

Great stuff, Todd. I just knew the stereo 45s percentage for 1973 would
jump more than for previous years. I expect the same for 1974.

To Todd:

Could you please double-check your commercial copy of "Let Me Serenade You"?

I *believe* the stereo side of the slightly-remixed promo 45 is rechanneled (split delay line) stereo; I was wondering if the commercial 45 is a true-stereo version.

Thanks,

Andy

On my longtime wish list for CD - the true 45 version of "Thinking Of You" from Loggins & Messina.

Seconded, maybe as a bonus track on a Legacy reissue.

Andy, the stock 45 is the same (E) stereo as the stereo side of the DJ 45, per the 2008 "Serenade" thread http://www.top40musiconcd.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4396&PN=165 - here .

Andy, I just pulled out my stock 45 and re-
listened
to it for you. It does also include the same, horrible "split delay line,
electronic stereo" version as your promo 45 does. Maybe Todd and I
should've "editorialized" a bit more on some of these (narrow stereo, "E"
stereo, "Jimmy-Ienner-distortion" stereo, etc.), on a few of these!    :)

(**Oops - I see that John (Yah Shure) beat me to the reply by 5 minutes;
sorry for the dupe info**)

Sorry for the faster fingers, Jim. :) And I concur that an (E) notation would be helpful for cases such as this, plus it would be in keeping with Pat's use of that symbol.

Speaking of symbols, perhaps the "Tooth's" logo would suffice for identifying those "Sound Of Ienner" productions, if it were deemed absolutely necessary. Or maybe a Verrazano-Narrows Bridge icon. :)

I've now updated the list to reflect that commercial 45 copies of Three Dog Night's "Let Me Serenade You" are in electronically rechanneled stereo. If anyone knows of other electronically rechanneled stereo 45s not accounted for in previous yearly mono/stereo lists, please bring them to my attention.

What about this one:
Raspberries - "I Wanna Be with You" (stereo)

If this one's stereo, it's extremely narrow. Comparing the mono & stereo sides of my promo the only difference I hear is a bit of "spacial" reverb.

To Hykker:

"I Wanna Be With You" IS stereo!

As Jim so accurately & eloquently tagged it, it's 'Jimmy-Ienner-distortion' stereo!!

It's funny - when Yah Shure mentioned "Jimmy-Ienner-distortion" stereo, the first thing I thought of was "I Wanna Be With You". But it's the ONLY thing I thought of, as the other Raspberries singles have much better separation. Were there any other Ienner productions whose stereo was as narrow as "Go All the Way"?

By "Jimmy-Ienner-distortion stereo" do you mean different compression parameters on left & right channels (as was discussed in the "Go All The Way" thread? If so, how does that differ from being just another form of (E)?

I started buying 45s in summer '72, and I'm surprised to see how many '72-'74 45s I owned that were in mono, and I never noticed at the time. I had a stereo record player. Granted the speakers were attached and were only 2 feet apart from each other, but I just never noticed a difference when I was playing mono 45s!

It's amazing to me how it took the music industry over 6 years [1968-1975] to go from nearly-all-mono-45s to nearly-all-stereo-45s (with 1975 being very close to 100%, I presume.) You'd think the music industry would be really fast paced.

Then again, how many years did it take the music industry to switch from all-vinyl albums to you-can-buy-any-album-you-want-on-CD (and I'm referring to top 200 albums, not necessarily independent albums). Was it 1983 when people could start buying some of their favorite current albums on domestic CDs? And what was the last year that you had to be forced to buy an album on vinyl because the label chose not to release it on CD? My last album like that was a late-1986 Stacy Lattisaw album - it didn't come out on CD until 2011. But I'm guessing the LAST year a fan had to sometimes be forced to buy an album on vinyl (because the label refused to release it on CD) was 1989 or 1990 - which would also be about a 7-year span. Anyone have a more accurate estimate of this?

To Hykker:

In "I Wanna Be with You''s case I do believe it really IS true stereo; I truly do hear some instrument as well as backup vocal separation (especially when widened).

I am one of the few that actually think "Go All The Way" is 'legally' true stereo as my ears hear it being mixed on a stereo board with most of the potentiometers going damn near straight-up-the-middle (but individual reverb returns being somewhat panned). I do not believe it was mixed to full-track mono, then cleverly rechanneled.

The Raspberries Capitol material is true Stereo, albeit of the narrow variety. It was part of their retro rock sound.

Go All The Way most definitely the narrowest stereo possible... if you widen the stereo field, the vocals during the intro to the song show up only in the right channel...and you can hear the intro in widened stereo here:

Ed:

I'll have to defer to Jim to double-check his Seals & Crofts' "We May Never Pass This Way (Again)" commercial 45 to confirm if it is indeed in stereo. Though given that the duo's two prior Top 40 singles from 1973 ("Hummingbird" and "Diamond Girl") were both issued on commercial 45 in stereo, I would be inclined to think at least some pressings of "We May Never Pass This Way (Again)" would've been in stereo as well. If you're not 100% certain whether yours is in mono, I'd be happy to take a listen to a dub of your 45 and report back with my analysis.

Kudos to Ed for catching this one. My commercial 45 (same deadwax as his copy: QCA 3703 S-1C, a Columbia Terre Haute pressing) is also mono.

And so is my copy of the first Back To Back Hits GWB 0310 reissue 45 (deadwax QCA 3703S-1B, a Columbia Pitman pressing.

Guys, I just pulled out my commercial 45 and listened again - it is
absolutely in stereo. It is vinyl. My 45's deadwax is a handwritten "WB
7740 QCA-3707-S-1A", with the machine-stamped letters "TM    TML"
at the end.

While I give both Ed's and John's "mono" reports full credibility, I can't say
that it makes much sense to me. As best I can recall, by 1971, WB was
issuing all of their commercial 45s in stereo. Usually, once a label set
policy on how their 45s were to be commercially released, it was etched in
stone. This song charted long after that transition had occurred, in
November of 1973.

My promo 45 isn't where it's supposed to be filed right now, but I seem to
recall that it was mono/stereo, and both sides featured a shorter, (3:50)
short radio edit. What confuses me here is that the commercial 45's
length is (4:15). If WB never intended to provide radio with the full version
of it, then why would they even bother to do a mono mix of it?

My only theory would be that perhaps WB's original intent *was* to have
the mono/stereo DJ 45 mimic the stock 45's length. Perhaps engineers
then began promo 45 prep work. Clearly, at some point, if that was the
plan, it was changed, and ultimately radio was sent the edit. Who knows,
maybe someone at WB mistakenly dubbed/sent out the "didn't-end-up-
being-used" mono (4:15) version to a pressing plant or two. How else
could mono stock 45 copies have happened?

My gut: Ed's and John's 45 copies got pressed up in mono, by accident, by
one specific plant, using machine stamped deadwax, that thought they
were producing exactly what all the other plants were. But they weren't.
(FYI, my other 1973 stock copy, also in stereo, and also having
handwritten deadwax (with 1-B, not 1-A, though.)

Todd, in the end, I guess we go with both mono and stereo for this one.
Thanks for the report, Ed/John - bizarre, interesting stuff!

My stock and Back To Back Hits reissue were both mastered by Columbia, with machine-stamped deadwax numbers. My 3:50 DJ 45 (vinyl Columbia Santa Maria pressing) has hand-etched deadwax numbers and - like Jim's vinyl stock copy - was mastered by The Mastering Lab (TML). So we have two different firms doing the mastering for this 45: the record's presser and an independent west coast mastering house. Jim's "vinyl" notation points to the CSM plant for the stereo stocks, leaving at least CTH for the mono stock (can anyone with a WB 7740 stock Pitman pressing chime in?)

This wasn't the first Warner family 45 I bought that indicated it was stereo (designated by the "S" to the right of the label's printed parenthetical matrix number) but turned out to be mono; that would be 1972's "Marcella" by The Beach Boys (Brother/Reprise 1101.) The printed matrix is "(PCA3179)S", but the hand-etched matrix is "PCA-3179-1". Meanwhile the flip side ("Hold On Dear Brother") is in stereo. Interestingly, both sides of this Beach Boys 45 were mastered at Artisan, yet another independent mastering firm.

Similarly, "Jessica," the B-side of my (mono) stock "We May Never Pass This Way Again" is in true stereo.

There was another mono Warner stock 45 in 1973, although in that case, the labels on "Smoke On The Water" did not lead one to believe otherwise.

Thanks everyone for the input. I've gone back and updated the list to show commercial 45 copies of "We May Never Pass This Way (Again)" were issued in both mono and stereo.

paul....one more difference i may unearthed....my
commercial 45 for the dells song 'give your baby a standing
oviation' issued as cadet 5696 clearly lists the track as
'stereo' on the label with a listed run time of 3:52 but an
actual running time of 4:33 (thanks, john for providing the
correct track!!)......the thread says that this song is in
mono, but mine is stereo....can anyone else confirm my
findings?......

Ed, I worked closely with Todd on these, since he's not a 45 collector. I just
pulled my commercial 45. As you point out, the 45 label states stereo. Also,
the Post-It note info stuck to my paper sleeve says that when I
timed/analyzed this 45, it was indeed also stereo "in the grooves". (Deadwax
info is "2779-2".) So it looks like either I said "mono" over the phone to
Todd in error, or Todd mis-heard me/made a transcription error at his end
back then. No matter. Nice catch. To me, all current evidence points to all
1973 stock 45s appearing in stereo, not mono. Hoping Todd can make the
correction, whenever he gets a minute.....

my commercial 45 for the ohio players song 'funky worm'
issued as westbound 214 does NOT state 'stereo' on the
label....it has not neither stereo or mono indicated but
sounds mono to me....the 1973 list of 45's says that the
label incorrectly lists stereo but is in mono, but my 45
is in contradiction to that.....it should be looked at
closer...

Ohio Players - "Funky Worm (mono - all 45 copies
incorrectly state "stereo" on the label)

Ed, at best, this appears to be a minor "word tweak" to me. Most
importantly, all "Funky Worm" 45s are in mono. In '72 and '73, Westbound
was the #1 label offender for stating "stereo" on db 45s that were, in fact,
mono. (The Detroit Emeralds quickly come to mind.)

I would suspect that either, 1) Someone at Westbound finally realized that
this repeated "stating stereo" 45 error was happening for their mono
singles, and modified later "Funky Worm" label batches, or, much more
likely, 2) More than one pressing plant was used for this song (which
would not be surprising, given that this was a rare, million selling single
for them), and that this plant, realizing the 45 master they got was
actually in mono, likely omitted the word "stereo" while prepping the
labels they would affix to their 45s.

my commercial 45 for the stylistics song 'break up to make
up' sounds like it's in mono, contrary to what the thread
says.....the run out groove info from 45 is 'AVCO-1596M-4
(with a circle around it) then 'F/W'....then '3703' in
reverse....can someone else check their vinyl 45 to see if
their's is mono or stereo...thx

I've got a commercial stereo 45 of The Partridge Family's "Looking Through The Eyes Of Love'. Not a promo or reissue. The dead wax info reads, B-1547-S-2. I've got many Bell 45s and, so far as I know, this is the only one in stereo.

On the 1973 list it says

Dells, The - "Give Your Baby a Standing Ovation" (mono)

However, The Dells song was released in the USA in stereo:

Might want to update the listing....

Gunhill Road's "Back When My Hair Is Short" is a totally
rewritten/remade song, cleaned up,from two raunchier
earlier LP versions (like both Stealers Wheel songs,
"Stuck in the Middle with You" &,es[pecially,
"Everyon'ds Agreed"..), though GR's song takes the cake,
given the rewritten,cleaned up lyrics..,

The long side is in mono:

I would assume the Edited Version on the flip side is as
well. Promo 45s, that early, if it didn't say "stereo" on
the promo it was probably mono.

Looks like a stereo promo exists for "Natural High," though, Rich:

https://www.reggaecollector.com/en/detail/index.php?number=82545 - https://www.reggaecollector.com/en/detail/index.php?number=8 2545

They only show the mono label side, but they list it as stereo on one side and mono on the other.

Could anyone who owns the London commercial 45 of "Natural
High" double-check to hear if it isn't very narrow stereo
instead of mono (or normal stereo)?

I used to own it, and I recall that was the case with my
pressing.

Thanks!

Andy

Another one that appears in stereo on this 45 promo is Alice Cooper's Hello Hurray, which the list has as mono. The edited version is mono but if anyone can find the edited version in stereo on a 45 much appreciated.

Nice find. Always try to justify stereo where I can in my Jukebox collection. Now I can!

Well, that's because the list is exclusively comprised of
commercial releases. It wasn't intended to include promos.

YouTube poster The45Prof has copy "Never Let You Go" that plays stereo instead of mono, and it's a stock copy, not a promo, that's pictured in the video.
