The following is a list of every single that peaked on the Billboard Top 40 chart in 1974 (based on Joel Whitburn's Pop Annual 1955-1999 publication) and also includes the Top 40 hits Pat has included in the database based a composite of other music charts. Through a collaborative effort with my partner-in-crime Jim (a.k.a. "jimct") and some valuable assistance from KentT, Paul Haney, and Yah Shure, we've made our best effort to determine whether the corresponding commercial 45 release for each single was issued in mono or stereo. This list only accounts for original 45 releases and not later re-issues.
I have posted a mono/stereo 45 list for each year from 1968-1975 (see links below) and hope forum members and fellow music collectors will find these lists to be a useful reference guide. I also highly encourage anyone to let me know if there are any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions so that I can make the necessary corrections. Here are the percentages (rounded to the nearest tenth) of Top 40 commercial 45s issued in stereo by year. As others here have correctly suspected, 45 releases in 1974 were overwhelmingly in stereo: 1974: 93.4% 1973: 74.8% 1972: 51.9% 1971: 35.7% 1970: 26.9% 1969: 19.1% 1968: 3.1% |

My stock copy has a normal stereo mix; it isn't narrow at all. Matrix number is T54241-61921 - 9A - SO2B (the usual pan-fried Motown vinyl quality is also in evidence.) |

Donny Osmond's 'Are You Lonesome Tonight' is mono, as is its flip 'When I Fall In Love'. Although 'When I Fall In Love' is not listed in the database, Billboard listed this as a two-sided hit. In fact, during its first three weeks on the Hot 100, 'When I Fall In Love' was listed as the A-side, although it was listed as the B-side during its entire stay in the Top 40.
My copy of Marvin Gaye's 'Distant Lover' is as Yah Shure's, except that the Matrix number ends with 'SO8B' instead of 'SO2B'. EDIT: See posts below for corrections. |

The version of 'Distant Lover' that both Yah Shure and I refer to in our posts is NOT the hit version. The version on Tamla 54241 is the studio version released as the flip of 'Come Get To This'. The hit version is a live version on Tamla 54253. |

Since there appears to be some ambiguity in determining the mono/stereo status for Donny Osmond's "Are You Lonesome Tonight?", I've posted "mono and stereo?" in the master list for the time being (it wouldn't mark the first time an Osmond single was issued in both) but have left open the possibility that only one or the other may exist. |

I have the promo 45 of AYLT/WIFIL and both are mono with
no "A" side or mono/stereo designation on either side. Both have K 14677 in the deadwax, of course, and AYTL shows only K-6828. But WIFIL says 73L5442-W. Other marks only on WIFIL read A-1 and DSS. Sure looks like that was meant to be the hit, but it wasn't to be. GM |

The second pressing which has the Long Version of "So You Are A Star" by The Hudson Brothers is true stereo. My copy was pressed on vinyl and sounds great. ------------- I turn up the good and turn down the bad! |

my commercial 45 for the beach boys song "surfin usa"
issued as the orange label capitol 3924 states the run time as 2:27 and also states that it is the 'mono' version and indeed IS in mono......first question....which colored label was this issued as the re-release in 1974?.....second question....paul's 1974 list above of mono/stereo releases says that this was actually a stereo release....my vinyl does NOT confirm this...can anyone else chime in? ------------- edtop40 |

I only have a DJ 45 of this one, so I'll let someone else handle the stock copy question. FWIW, the DJ 45 is mono/mono (and labeled as such) with "Surfin' U.S.A." on both sides. The labels are identical, with the P-3924 and (PRO-6924) catalog and matrix numbers listed on both sides. Curiously, the deadwax numbers do differ between the two sides, with "45-39181 - F3" on one side and "PRO-6924-F-1" on the other. But I didn't detect any sonic differences; they're both mono. |

Ed, since I provided the original findings to Todd for the song, I just re-
pulled and re-listened to the Capitol 3924 commercial 45 I bought during its 1974 re-charting. My copy is exactly as I'd reported earlier. The 45 label states mono, but the song is clearly in full stereo. My deadwax info: "S45 - 39181 - W1". This clearly differs from John's DJ 45 deadwax info above. Ed, since "your vinyl does not confirm this", what is your 45's deadwax info? |

hey todd....my commercial 45 for the al green song 'sha-la-

Ed, I provided the initial "stereo" report to Todd. I clearly went "back and
forth" on this one, as my Post-It note, attached to all my 45's, had "mono" whited out to "stereo," thinking I'd detected a narrow stereo mix, upon second listen. So, to solve this one once and for all, I just pulled out my "Sha-La-La" mono/stereo promo 45. And the stereo separation IS clearly much easier to pick up on the stereo side of my promo. So I am going to now agree with Ed on this, and request that Todd change the "master commercial 1974 entry" for this song, from stereo to mono. Thanks, Ed! |

The single wasn't yet released in 1973. "Jessica" debuted on the Hot 100 the week ending January 19, 1974. |

Hey, anyone know where I can get the TRUE "Takin Care of
Business" & "Blue Collar" edits by BTO? (I got a "TCoB" "single version " from someone on SoulSeek but it is so not the one I heard...#NotMySingleVersion lol. AFAIK the commercial single and LP of TCB are the same. There was a promo edit that runs ~3:15, is that the one you're thinking of? |
