Subject: List of mono and Stereo 45s - 1975

The following is a list of every single that peaked on the Billboard Top 40 chart in 1975 (based on Joel Whitburn's Pop Annual 1955-1999 publication) and also includes the Top 40 hits Pat has included in the database based a composite of other music charts. Thanks to information Jim (a.k.a. "jimct") posted in another thread, I've compiled a list detailing whether the commercial 45 release for each single was issued in mono or stereo. This list only accounts for original 45 releases and not later re-issues.

I have posted a mono/stereo 45 list for each year from 1968-1975 (see links below) and hope forum members and fellow music collectors will find these lists to be a useful reference guide. I also highly encourage anyone to let me know if there are any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions so that I can make the necessary corrections.

Final Score...

Here are the percentages (rounded to the nearest tenth) of Top 40 commercial 45s issued in stereo by year. As I mentioned in another thread, I'm stunned to learn there were only slightly more stereo 45 releases in 1975 than in 1974:

1975: 95.6%
1974: 93.8%
1973: 74.8%
1972: 51.9%
1971: 35.7%
1970: 26.9%
1969: 19.1%
1968: 3.1%

By the way, on a more trivial and unrelated side note, can some technical expert explain why whenever I title these threads "List of Mono and Stereo 45s - 19XX" and try to capitalize the "M" in "Mono", it keeps reverting back to a lower-case "m"? For the life of me, I can't figure out why this keeps happening!

Does anyone know if some commercial 45 pressings of Disco Tex & His Sex-o-lettes' "I Wanna Dance Wit' Choo (Doo Dat Dance), Part I" are in mono? I'm asking because the lone database CD with a "45 version" comment is in mono.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your hard work on these lists, Paul. That was quite a task! They are already proving very useful to me.

I'd double check that the 45 of "I Get Lifted" by George McCrae was in stereo and not mono.

Yeah, Santi, I'd love to hear "I Get Lifted" in true stereo too, but it's mono on the 45 & album to the best of my research.

Saw mention on the BSN board that the George McCrae album
is being remastered and re-released on July 3rd. No
indication of whether "I Get Lifted" will be in true
stereo.

Tracks:
1. Rock Your Baby
2. I Can t Leave You Alone (I Keep Holdin On)
3. You Got My Heart
4. You Can Have It All
5. Look At You
6. Make It Right
7. I Need Somebody Like You
8. I Get Lifted
9. Rock Your Baby (Reprise)
10. Rock Your Baby (Single Version) (Bonus Track)
11. Look At You (Single Version) (Bonus Track)

Jim has reviewed his commercial 45 copy of George McCrae's "I Get Lifted" and, like others here, has confirmed that it is indeed in mono and not "stereo" as stated on the record label. I've updated the master list accordingly.

Kent and Andrew, can you confirm whether or not your 45 copies also incorrectly state "stereo" on the record label?

Did T.K. Records ever issue a dedicated promo 45 for "I Get Lifted"? I received a double-A sided DJ 45 for "I Can't Leave You Alone," but when the label flipped the single in favor of the B-side, I was sent a stock copy with a purple "PLUG SIDE" stamp inside a purple ring on the "Lifted" side.

"I Get Lifted" is listed as stereo on my copy, too.

Never saw a dedicated promo single of "I Get Lifted" after it was flipped. T.K. Records reserviced commercial stock pressings with purple "PLUG SIDE" on "I Get Lifted". All of my copies are listed as Stereo but play in Mono. One is a Promo reservice, the other three stock copies. One is Vinyl, the others styrene.

Never mind. :) I answered my own question by reacquainting myself with a record I'd forgotten I had. There was, indeed, a dedicated, double-B-sided promo 45 for "I Get Lifted", shown http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/YahShure/McCrae-1007.jpg - here next to its double-A-sided promo predecessor, "I Can't Leave You Alone".

Both sides of the "stereo" "I Get Lifted" DJ 45 play mono. Perhaps T.K. meant that having the same mono recording on both sides of the record somehow made the sum total stereo. ;)

Thanks for that post. Solves some curiosity about the existence of the Double B Side promo. Still mono though. Apparently a low budget session as was Rock Your Baby.

This is a UK release on Big Break Records (part of the Cherry Red label). Anyone have any of the previous Big Break releases? Any recommendations or should I avoid this one?

Big Break is a superb label. I have their Denice Williams "Let's Hear It for the Boy" deluxe edition. All remastered from tape -- no disc dubs here.
