Subject: 80s BB Top 40 hits not in db/reverse
Date Posted: 14 March 2012 at 10:39am
In a recent thread, Jeff (Fetta) requested a list of BB Top 40 hits not in
Pat's db (due to lower peak rankings in Cashbox). I have long had this info
noted in one of my RR "Pop Annual" books. Since Jeff is currently working
on an 80's project, he's most anxious to know of those "stragglers" first.
Conversely, there are are songs included in Pat's db that did *not* reach
BB's Top 40, due to a higher peak in Cashbox - I will note these as well.
Finally, there are a few Dec/Jan peakers each year where Pat's db has it in
Dec. of one year, while BB has it in Jan. of the next year (or vice versa). I'll
also make note of those. And since 99.999% of all Top 30 peaking hits are
in both BB and Pat's db, I started my yearly analysis with songs peaking on
BB at #31, and then on up to #40. I'll start with the year 1980, and add
more 80's years as time allows:

1980 BB Top 40 hits not in Pat's db:
-Barry Manilow--I Don't Want To Walk Without You (#36)
-Donna Summer--Walk Away (#36)
-Dolly Parton--Starting Over Again (#36)
-Kenny Loggins--Keep The Fire (#36)
-Livingston Taylor--First Time Love (#38)
-Blondie--Atomic (#39)
-Elton John--Don't You Wanna Play This Game No More? (#39)
-Bonnie Pointer--I Can't Help Myself (#40)
-Paul Simon--One Trick Pony (#40)
-Change--A Lover's Holiday (#40)
-Alice Cooper--Clones (We're All) (#40)

1980 non-BB Top 40 hits that are in Pat's db:
-Robert John--Lonely Eyes
-Queen--Play The Game
-Mac Davis--It's Hard To Be Humble
-Romantics--What I Like About You

Peak year difference:
-Tom Johnston--Savannah Nights (Pat's db: 1979; BB: 1980)

(P.S.-Thanks, Aaron, for the massive help, good buddy! I forgot that you
and I worked together on something a while back, and that I'd shared this
specific info with you at that time.)

Finally, I cannot take ANY credit for putting any of this info together. The research on this was done several years ago by our own jimct. I just happened to remember that it was done, and I made sure to save a copy.

Is there a reason I still can't find The Moody Blues "Steppin' In A Slide Zone" in the database? It reached #39 in 1978 (2 weeks) but is MIA when
I search for the band or the title.

Yes, the reason is that many years ago, Pat used a chart average position to determine what gets included. For a 1978 hit, he might have used the average peak from Billboard, Cash Box, and Record World.

Several people have expressed interest in having all Billboard top 40 hits added to the database, and I do plan on making these updates.

If anyone has researched the 1950s, 1960s, and 1990s, please add that info here. I believe all Billboard top 40 hits in the last ~30 years are likely in the database, as there were no other publications used for averaging.
