I've been hearing what sounds like a pop remix of Gotye featuring Kimbra's "Somebody That I Used to Know" on local Top 40 stations. The most noticeable difference is it contains an additional percussion/rhythm overdub not heard on the album version. Does anyone know what the official name of this mix is? And has it appeared on an official promo CD single release or is it only being made available to radio stations via digital download?

A couple of weeks ago this remix showed up on TM Century's A disc as "Tempo Edit".

Bumping this back up since it's now being reported in another thread that this mix is called the "Rhythmic Remix".

I too have been trying to locate a remix we heard on the
local alt. station. It kept all the elements of the LP
version but had an extra drum track.
I've tried quite a few sites that post remixes, and alas
there are hundreds out there for this song.
But, they all are club type remixes, changing the whole
track. I also found the above mentioned "Tempo Edit" but
to me that beat is too techno for what i heard on the
radio.
I found this one remix that fits what everyone describes,
and i *think* it may be the one we heard:
http://www.z90.com/pages/z_newmusic?Mike-D---Somebody-
That-I-Used-To-Know-Re=1&blockID=593570&feedID=7484
It's by a "DJ Mike D" and seems to be designed for pop
radio. I found it posted at other stations as well.
Thanks for any input.

Yes, it's the "Mike D Rhythmic Remix"--the same one I referred to in the other post. It just has an added rhythm track on top of the LP version.

that was downloadable from his site.

Interesting that he has it on his site. Although it's the same mix as what I have, mine runs 30 seconds longer. I'd be curious to know which version is being played on the air (the 3:34 edit or the 4:04 length remix).
The stations in my area are playing the album version.

I've heard nothing but the album version in Tulsa on the CHR, Rhythmic CHR, and Alternative stations.
(This song has really crossed format boundaries! I'm waiting for the local country stations to start playing it... lol!)

UPDATE:
I heard one of the local CHRs (106.9 K-Hits, KHTT-FM 106.9 Muskogee / Tulsa, OK) play the 4:03 Mike D "added hook version" remix tonight in what I assume was regular rotation. Although they might only be playing this version at night, there was nothing said before or after to indicate it was an unusual event.
While certainly a different feel, I do like the mix! One notable difference between the longer "added hook" mix and the original mix (& the album version) is that it breaks the first verse into two "mini-verses" which more closely match the length of the female singer's verse.
Someone mentioned two versions with 30 seconds' difference between; he now has both versions posted:

Here's another interesting version that Kiss-FM in Dallas is playing, but I don't know the name of the edit. It's the album mix, but it has been edited to add in half of the first chorus in between the first and second verses. Also, the first four seconds has been cut off the beginning.
In other words, at 0:48 of the album version, it cuts to the first chorus, plays half of that chorus, then jumps back to 0:48 of the LP version. I haven't dubbed it off the radio to figure out if anything else has been edited or changed.

Bizarre, Aaron... hadn't heard that one!
Our other CHR, 92.1 / The Beat (KTBT Broken Arrow) is playing the album version unless they're playing the edit you're describing... which isn't unlikely, since both The Beat and Kiss-FM are Clear Channel.
I'll see if I can catch them playing it from the beginning and find out for sure which version they're airing...

Even though it's only May, I think this song is already a shoo-in as the sleeper hit of the year.

It certainly is different from everything else on the US pop chart at the moment. Since it went to #1 in several countries around the world several months ago, I suppose it shouldn't come as a big surprise that it also hit #1 here.

I think one of the reasons that it's been such a huge hit around the world is that it's very catchy yet very distinctive sounding - I can't think of another recent hit record it remotely sounds like. I think a lot of left-field smashes are like that, but the downside is they're usually very difficult to follow up.

I managed to dub this off Kiss-FM tonight, and it's the first time I heard them play it with the full intro intact. I suppose some DJs just cue in :04 to give it a more powerful start out of a jingle/sweeper.
Also there is a slight crossfade out of the half chorus and not a straight edit. To create your own version, you would insert the first chorus (straight edit on the downbeat) at 0:48 of the LP version. Then, with the additional 15.6 seconds (half chorus) inserted, the overlap will occur at 1:03. You can just barely hear the words "no you" from the next part of the chorus.
I'm definitely curious to know if this is a homemade Clear Channel (or Kiss-FM Dallas) edit or if the record company issued this version.

Are there any stations that still play CDs on the air? Most, if not all commercial stations use some sort of music-on-hard-drive system these days. If it's a Clear Channel station, they're no doubt using Prophet/NextGen/whatever it's called now.

I actually think this song, especially in its slightly remixed form, isn't particularly different than Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People...

Now that you mention it, yeah. As musicmanatl noted, their follow-up was kind of a stiff. I don't follow alt-rock, not sure what pervious success either of these artists had there.

the funny thing about BOTH songs is that, when they first hit the airwaves, I was kind of like 'YAWN'. And then all of a sudden I was like, "eh. nice diversion..."

Just wanted to point out in assembling 2012 radio never played the slow version of the album or the album edit, but chose the Mike D Rhythmic Remix or its edit instead.
I am not aware it ever made a CD compilation but it should have. It is one of the main reasons it was #1 for so long.

did service the DJ Mike D remix in 2012 on Express Audio

The local CHR in Dallas station played their own edit of the album version. Their edit inserted the chorus between the first and second verse. The Hot AC played the Mike D Remix.

Maybe not where you live, but both Top 40/Hot AC
stations I do engineering for played the album
version. ISTR 92 Moose in Maine playing it too.
I wasn't even aware of a remix until this thread.
I will admit to being a bit surprised as to how big a
hit this song was given the subject matter. Really
catchy song though...

There's a guy who worked in Erie PA that's been the
operations manager at 92 Moose for the last couple of
years. His air name/DJ name is Cooper Fox.

I know of him, may have met him at an NHAB function. He
spent several years at WMWV in N. Conway, N.H. I think
he may have worked in Portland too.

Some AC stations ran a home-made edit that removed the word "screwed", in "Somebody That I Used To Know" which was easy enough
to make with all the instrumental material available.

I am honestly surprised the album and probably its edit got any airplay. I take it these stations were mostly slow A/C which explains it. Not only very catchy, the number of remixes exploded sending it up into the top 10 and then to #1. Of the hits of the 2010's it stands as one of the most successful one-hit wonders of the decade (his follow up did chart position #92 if i recall and then he did a disappearing act completely for the last 7 years)and worthy of inclusion.
