The database indicates that the different versions of Give Me The Night are length differences (LP length, dj 45 length).
However, the actual 45 has some mix differences. The most noticeable is during the acapella break toward the end. The LP version has some instrumentation that is not present in the acapella section on the 45.
The version on the Collection CD (listed as dj 45 length in the database) is an early fade of the LP version.
But the 45 cannot be recreated from the LP version due to the mix differences.

Great. Another 45 I have to find.

Roscoe, my dj 45 which does have an RE-1 printed on the label, is not an early fade of the LP version but is an early fade of the commercial 45. You are correct in that the version found on "Collection" is the LP version faded early.

That is true. It was a common practice of Quincy Jones and engineer Bruce Swedien to do mixes specifically for 45 release. There are a number of Michael Jackson singles that have unique single mixes. This was done to make them sound the best they could on a 7" single and to minimize any cutting problems when they were mastered. The 45 edit of "Give Me The Night" does appear on The Best Of George Benson CD.

Unless there are two different pressings of the "Best Of" cd (Warner Brothers 46050), the 45 version is not on my copy of the "Best Of" cd. The LP version has an extra guitar mixed in starting at 3:07 that does not appear on the 45. That guitar is present on the "Best Of" cd.

Has anyone been able to locate this one on an import cd?

I was just able to hear what the actual 45 sounds like, and the instrumentation at the end is not the only difference. There is also an extra background vocal overdub on the 45 mix. At the acappella break, there's a female background vocal that sings "we can reach the stars..." etc. This vocal overdub plays through the rest of the 45 until it is faded out.
Now, I have this 45 in front of me, and it appears to be a commercial pressing. There are no promo markings anywhere on the label, and it has the b-side "Dinorah, Dinorah." The printed and actual run time is (3:41), so apparently not all commercial copies run (3:52) as the database says.
This label also has "RE-1" printed below the catalog number, which is WBS49505 (YCA 9446 V1S). The runout grove says "WBS-49505 YCA-9446-V1-RE1-S-SR-1 SP 1-2."

Does anyone own the promo 12" single who can verify if the mix is the same as the LP, or if it is the single mix but longer?

Ok
I usually don't chime into these because i've gotten rid of so many of my singles.
But i remember well my commercial 45 of this track did NOT have the extra female vocal dubbed into the a cappela part, however I heard that version on the radio back then.
Always wondered where that other mix came from.I thought it was for radio only.
My single sounded much like an edit of the LP version (but i don't have it now to compare every detail.)
I only know for sure the above mix arronk describes was not on my 45.
So i guess there was more than one version issued?

I must assume at this point that there were two commercial 45 pressings of this song. The (3:41) version is not an early fade of the (3:52) 45 pressing. There seem to be horns audible from 3:31 to 3:32 on the (3:52) 45 version that are not audible on the (3:41) version of the 45. Neither of these 45 versions has yet to appear on cd.

Pat, I happened to notice that the database currently states that "DJ copies run (3:41)." Just wanted to alert you to the fact that the mono & stereo sides of my DJ 45 instead features the stated (3:52), actual (3:53) version.

Just timed my copy of this dj 45 which states (3:41) and it runs exactly (3:41).

Ok, so we know the 3:41 single version is a remix. Is the 3:52 version an early fade of the LP version?

I was just revisiting this song, and it seems Brian's question was unanswered. I did some careful analysis of both the 3:52 and 3:41 versions. Here's my findings:
- The 3:41 45 version and the early faded LP version are the exact same mix up until 3:07, where the extra vocal overdub comes in and the guitar is removed from the mix on the 45.
- The 3:52 45 version is a slightly different mix from start to finish, with the most noticeable difference starting at 3:07.

So, guess the question is, did they release the first 45 in 1980, then release the 45 with the different mix? Can't really remember which we played on the radio in 1980.

I just found this 45. I got the 3:41 listed time one.
On the label above the time it says RE-1.
Without comparing with the LP, it seems to be a different mix throughout.

Did we ever confirm if the 12" promo is the same mix or different than the 45 mix?

Jeff, I have personally never been able to track down the promo 12" single.
I've only seen the UK 12" offered for sale. At my station, we were playing our
music off of vinyl in 1980, and we always played this song off of promo 45.
There is currently a dub of the US promo 12" on YouTube. Hoping that you
could perhaps glean the particulars you desire from giving it a listen....

I was revisiting this song today, and I stumbled upon a recent database entry: George Benson Ultimate Collection. Pat has labeled the version of "Give Me The Night" on this disc as the 12" single version, which is presumably the UK 12" version as there was not a commercial US 12" single to my knowledge.
Good news! The 3:52 US 45 version is an early fade of the UK 12" version. I just ordered a copy of this 2 CD set, and I'm happy to now have the proper 45 & 12" remix on CD.
Although the 3:41 RE-1 45 version has yet to appear on CD (unless someone found it on an import), that version is the same mix as the LP until the 3:07 mark. The most noticeable difference on the final 34 seconds involves the female vocal overdubs ("we can reach the stars if we try") which continue through the end of the fadeout, and the lead guitar which has been removed from the mix between 3:07 to 3:15.

This is definitely longer than the 45-rpm promo, but has that remixed female vocal you've all mentioned. In the day, I heard the edit with the guitar (I suppose the LP edit), not the overdubbed female vocals.

Good news indeed, Aaron. Thanks for the heads up on this, as well as the debut CD appearance of Inside Love (So Personal). It's just a shame that they didn't also include the promo 45 version of Love X Love on this collection. I've never encountered it on CD and as far as I know, it can't be edited using the commercial 45 version. But hey, you can't win 'em all.

Aaron, I have just received my U.S. promo 12" single for "Give Me The Night".
and have shot you out a dub, for your analysis. The "Give Me The Night" side
has a listed time of (4:58), states "PRO-A-882 RE-1" on the label, and has
handwritten deadwax info of "PRO A1 882-RE1-A1".

Thanks, Jim! It's interesting that they used "RE-1" on the label and in the deadwax, because your promo 12" contains the LP version. I should also add that the UK 12" mix has quite a bit of dynamic range compression (not brickwalling) to try to make it sound beefy. When you compare it to the 45, it doesn't quite sound the same because of all the compression that was added. The CD, though, is mastered well and does not have any hard limiting/brickwalling.

Could you share where this fade starts? I'd like to recreate the 3:52 45 version using this UK 12" single.

Just yesterday, I obtained a copy of a UK import called Midnight Moods, which is a George Benson compilation. Track 2 is the US 3:52 45 version of "Give Me The Night." The sound is a bit flat, but it can be fixed with a little EQ adjustment. Also, this doesn't have the added dynamic range compression that is found on the UK 12" mix from the 2 CD set. This will now be my go-to copy for this hard-to-find single mix.
