Since there has been a mini-revival of the domestic CD single lately (although VERY mini), we thought we'd start documenting all these releases. Most of them are store-chain exclusives, primarily Walmart. Here are a few recent titles I've found, and I know Paul Haney will be adding to the list.
I'm not including the American Idol EPs from Walmart because, at five different songs a piece, they violate the RIAA's "legal" definition of a single, which is no more than four separate songs. They RIAA says that is an EP. (I assume a maxi with eight different version of one song would still be counted as a single.) I'm trying to include information on whether or not a single is lossless and not just mastered from an MP3 or AAC, as that has been an increasing problem since about 2003. I pretty much stopped purchasing CD singles around 2003 due to overall lack of product and my steeply declined interest in the Top 40 music scene at the time. I believe the last CD single I purchased though was in 2006: Taylor Hicks - "Do I Make You Proud" (J/19 85833) 1) Do I Make You Proud? (4:07) 2) Takin' It to the Streets (3:35) I know my wife also purchased Mariah Carey's "Obsessed" on CD single at Wal-Mart a few years ago, though I'm unable to pass along the track listing and run time info because her copy seems to have gotten misplaced. |

You beat me to it, Paul. I picked up that and several of the others at Walmart yesterday. (Ordered store pickup for some of them.)
I have now verified all tracks on these recent singles as lossless: One Direction - Live While We're Young Katy Perry - California Gurls The Wanted - Glad You Came Tim McGraw - Truck Yeah Lionel Richie & Shania Twain - Endless Love OMG - Where The Boys At? Jay-Z - Run This Town (also the single speed) Curiously, Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" does NOT appear to be lossless. It's really hard to tell on that one, and I could be wrong, but I see a faint amount of information at the top of the spectrum on the HitDisc promo sampler version that seems to be cut out of the Walmart single. |

I don't think all Walmarts carry them...I didn't see any at either of the 2 stores closest to me. The $5 bin at both stores just had what appeared to be cutouts or budget full CDs. Maybe it's at the discretion of the store manager? |

I'm pretty sure that most Walmarts carry these, although some parts of the country might be better stocked than others. Most of the local Walmarts here in the Milwaukee area only get about 5-10 copies of these singles and they tend to sell-out pretty fast. I think that the music inventory is stocked by an outside company, so the selections tend to be pretty uniform from store-to-store. I rarely find the singles in the $5 budget section, they are usually on the end-cap displays with the other new releases (although I've also found them in the regular A-Z artist section). If all else fails, you can check online. |

| Most of my local Walmarts have them in the $5.00-or-less CD discount Bin, Hykker, even the brand-new releases. And they're not very common. What's listed in this thread is about all there have been. Though you can still find CD singles for lots of the current hits, maybe even most of them, in the UK and Europe. |

I've been pretty lucky as most of the Wal-Marts around here (Milwaukee) seem to carry at least a few copies of each one (and they tend to sell-out pretty fast). They are almost always featured on the end-cap with the other new releases, but sometimes they are filed away with the regular CDs or in the $5 section. You can also order them online at Walmart's site or find them on Amazon or e-bay. They are priced at about $2 in the stores...of course online prices can vary widely as some are more scarce than others. BTW, I think the listings in this thread are pretty complete, at least as far as Top 40 hits go (although I've been adding some non-Top 40s lately, especially by the bigger artists). I keep a sharp eye out for these as they come along and I'd be surprised if I missed any. |

I do have the CD/album version which doesn't match the version on TM Century's HitDiscs that were made at the time of the single's release (which I only have an mp3 copy of): HitDisc: HA200949 -- Cut 6 HitDisc: HJ200948 -- Cut 9 HitDisc: HP200930 -- Cut 18 HitDisc: HU200920 -- Cut 18 HitDisc: PM0909 -- Cut 20 GoldDisc: 1958N -- Cut 2 GoldDisc: 892N -- Cut 17 I'm looking for a lossless copy of the single mix. Does anyone have it on any of these TM Century discs? Also, the mix on those may be a special "promo only" "radio mix" and not matching the commercial CD single, so I'm not sure that I want to buy the commercial CD single. Does anyone know? |

| I'm pretty certain that's the regular album version (3:27) of "Bulletproof", as is on other European CD singles. And the 3 remixes (tracks 2-4) don't line up time-wise. The mystery remix of "Bulletproof" (also 3:27 - adding to the difficulty of tracking this version down) has more instrumentation. If someone wants to hear the remix (i.e., the one on TM Century), please PM me. |
