| I don't know how many hundreds of times I've heard this song over the years, but something just jumped out at me today. At the (1:49) mark (during the line "when you scream"), there is some sort of anomaly. It's on all of the CDs that I checked (even the music video on youtube). Does anybody else hear this or am I just hearing things? |

Sounds like somebody bumped a mic or something similar (or maybe I'm just losing it). |

I listened at 1:49, and like Mark, I don't hear anything wrong there. This topic reminds me of what I hear in the Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You" on headphones, in the 1st verse. I hear a repeated thump that I don't think was intended to be in the music (like somebody bumping a mic). I never noticed it on vinyl, on speakers. It wasn't until I heard it from a CD source on headphones, early '90s, that I noticed the weird anomaly.
To be specific, the loudest occurence is after the world "brain" at the 0:17/0:18 mark, and to a lesser extent over the word "something" at 0:15. Does anyone else hear it? and know what is going on there? |

Paul, I do hear what you're talking about. It's on all copies of the song on the second beat during the word "you," exactly at 1:49.
It's very subtle, but it basically sounds to me like they spliced two takes of the word "you" together right in the middle. Except that we can't unhear it, and will forever know that it's there every time we hear the song! (It's the same for the splice at the end of the opera section in "Bohemian Rhapsody".) I also hear it on "Drive" right where you say Paul, but

Ok with Aaron's detail i listen again and now i make it
out. Boy, that's some impressive ears Paul to zero in on that. And yeah, it almost sounds like there is a splice on that exact beat. Interesting. Could be a hundred reasons... but it is an elaborate mix, i could see them piecing together 2 mixdowns they liked. Just one theory. MM |

| Thanks for the confirmation, guys! I have a copy of the music video on a DVD and I watched it last night and sure enough, there's the "splice" (or whatever it is). If you guys couldn't hear it too, then I probably would've ended up in the sanitarium depicted in the video! The rest of that song is so smooth, that the "splice" was driving me crazy (pun intended). |

| Yeah, since I missed this anomoly the one time I checked, now I'm purposely not going to go back to try to hear it. This way I can always enjoy it (hopefully). Reminds me a bit of the more obviously edited "While You See a Chance". When that was a hit, there never sounded like anything was wrong with it. Once the CD era hit and I always heard the long version, going back to the single edit is EXCRUCIATING on my ears at that edit point! Same thing with the single version of Aerosmith's "Dream On." |

Does anyone have a low-res sample of the "Dream On" single? I'm not sure I've ever heard it. **** Actually I was able to hear the Aerosmith edit. I am sitting here with my jaw gaping open and smoke coming out of my ears (the same look I would get if somebody just ruined my favourite record). I cannot believe for the life of me that CBS records would let an edit like that be serviced to radio. That was a terrible job. Ever the contrarian, but I've always preferred the edit. To my ears the "I know, nobody knows" verse sounds tacked on, much like the bridge on "Crimson & Clover". Gotta agree on the Meatloaf song though... |

I only ask because you may have heard that version more often and become used to it.
