A while back, Todd e-mailed me, asking me for the details of my short/long
promo 45 for this song. Unfortunately, as none of my CT Top 40 stations ever added the song in 1975, me picking up a promo 45 for it was a lower personal priority. Well, I have finally picked one up, and here are the particulars. (Better late than never, my friend!) (Short Version): listed time (3:11); actual time (3:13). (Long Version): listed time (5:05); actual time (5:11). |

I wasn't sure if the listed 5:05 time on the long promo 45 side was accurate since this would be approximately :05 shorter than the LP version length. Thanks for confirming the long side actually matches the LP version length... This was worth the wait, my friend! |

Is the 45 version an edit of the LP version, or are there other differences

Answer: Yes and no. 45 can be created by editing (with one out-of-sequence) the LP version. But there is a flanger used on one passage of the 45 that is hard to recreate perfectly. Andy |

In Boston, MA, "Young Americans" was a #1 hit. (In Providice, RI, it was very big, too). So, reading what you wrote about the CT stations, it's another example how far apart two US cities can be, even though they're so close in physical distance. |

Gordon, your point is well taken. I always noticed that the Hartford
stations especially, would pay very close attention to what was happening in both nearby Springfield and Worcester, MA. But that was the cutoff. For CT radio purposes, Boston and Providence (which themselves have always been closely linked) may as well be Seattle, WA and Portland, OR! Same thing for Long Island, NY, and the CT shoreline. It's less than 20 miles from Bridgeport, CT to Port Jefferson, NY. And daily ferry service provides solid access. But, radio-wise, CT has never payed any attention to LI radio. Yet I've known several "further out on the Island" LI natives (not nearby to NYC, like Ed) that have long made CT radio their personal #1 choice. Kind of a "one-way thing" there. Strange! Throughout the country, I think, it's funny which nearby cities are considered "more relevant" by the local population. It can be north, south, east or west, and it isn't always to the closest nearby city. The reasons probably go back many years. |

The single version is now available on CD in two flavors. The original single version with the flanged breakdown is on the David Bowie 2014 2-CD comp "Nothing has changed". A 2007 Tony Visconti single remix can be found on the 3- CD set, which can also be downloaded from Pono. ------------- |
