Curious about something. Every database CD has the 45 version of this song, including "Balin" (the original album where the song came from). The "Balin" vinyl LP version runs (4:32) according to Wiki. What were those extra 17 seconds? An intro? A coda? The instrumental intro is doubled, and it night fade a few seconds later.
I finally found the lp version on the compilation cd highway rock: the one that you love. |

Doug, if you type in "Marty Balin Hearts" on YouTube, the first video
shown is the 1981 LP version. In addition to the intro doubling Daniel has just cited, I believe the instrumental ending also goes on longer. Like most stations did, our station did play "Hearts", in power rotation, for about 10 weeks back in '81. And yes, it is now 32 years ago. But I find that details of many songs I played/heard that often still stay with me. Therefore, I must add that, to my ears/brain, this 1981 LP version also sounded like it was a different vocal take than the one we played to death off of the 45. His vocal inflections here just weren't jiving with my long- ago DJ memories. Hopefully, someone with digital audio comparison skills can do their magic here, to see if I'm right or wrong. |

"Hearts" is one of my all-time favorites. I fell in love with it the very first time I heard it on the radio while on vacation with my parents in Boston in 1981. During my radio days in the late 80s/early 90s I played the original 45 on the air nearly every day and I still listen to it quite often. I'm not sure what you're hearing/not hearing Jim, but the vocal on the album version sounds identical to the 45 to my ears. |

Paul, thanks for your take. I will absolutely defer to your opinion on it. (Honestly, I much preferred the follow-up, "Atlanta Lady", so I probably had the studio monitor at a very low volume during "Hearts" most of the time!) :) |

I've found this exact issue on a few other CD and/or
digital re-issues of albums as well. It is very frustrating to me. As far as V/A comps and "Hits" compilations, by all means use that single master, but albums should be re-issued as they were! I understand that *some* albums were changed during their vinyl run and may have several different versions to choose from at cd reissue time..so choosing the right one may be difficult. It's the ones that are changed for digital re-issue that annoy me. MM |

I am curious if the 3:54 duration on the US promo 45
(with :14 second intro according to the label) is mistimed or is it a different edit than the 4:18 version that appears on the 2008 reissue of the 1981 LP? According to Discogs, most of the 7" records have a duration of 3:54. ------------- Rick |

I timed an 18 second intro on my copy.
I fade it out early at the end of song comes out at 3:54. I wonder if that is the only difference. |

I'm pretty sure 3:54 is an incorrect run time. There's a video on YouTube of the 45 being played, and the music seems to start at :07 and fade out at 4:22, which would total about 4 minutes and 15 seconds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fz0V7LIhrZg - Hearts 45 RPM That's not to say that there couldn't be any stock or promo copies out there that actually do run 3:54, but my guess is that they're all in the 4:15-4:18 area for actual length. ------------- Dan In Philly |

FWIW, my Canadian 45 has a 3:54 printed time, but my
audacity file of it runs 4:15. |
