my commercial 45 for the gary us bonds song 'quarter to
three' issued as legrand 1008 lists a run time on the
label
as 2:29 but actually runs 2:27......the version on the
varese 5938 cd 'the very best of' is pitched up way too
fast...in order to create the true vinyl 45 version
you'll
need to slow that cd version down to 80.90 bpm's and then
fade for 0:06 from 2:21-2:27 of the pitched down
track....pat, when time permits you may want to review
which 2:27 tracks on cd have the correct pitch
version....the way you can tell the pitch difference is
that the vinyl 45 doesn't have the clapping and 'yeahing'
as the song fades and the 'very best of has 0:04 of
clapping and 'yeahing' not found on the vinyl 45....

Perhaps someone can help. I have "Quarter
to Three" on the Rhino CD The Best of
Gary U.S. Bonds
, and it's pitched too
fast there, too, with the longer fade.
Does anyone who has digitally manipulated
the CD version know what percentage of the
too-fast version will match the correct 45
speed?

Thanks for bringing this thread back, Tim. I realized my
file is from the same CD and most likely is not slowed
down properly. I'm going to see if there's a 45 dub on
YouTube and hopefully report back.

I slowed the Varese file I had from Amazon Music down 3%
and it ran too slow. I'm wondering if the digital file
runs at the correct speed on Amazon?

Here's how to match the Legrand 1008 45 (my copies are both Columbia Terre Haute pressings, matrix ZTSP67904-1G) to the track from the Rhino Best Of CD Tim cited above, with its dead roll left intact:

1. Fade the ending from 2:18.222 to 2:23.911

2. Stretch by 103.19%. That is not a typo. I imagine it was hard to keep the speed in the right ballpark when the song was originally waxed direct to Edison Amberol cylinder.

Total length should be 2:28.502... which is a little short of a quarter to three.

To Yah Shure:

I was slow to pick up on your dry sense-of-humor thinking what you unearthed could actually be true!

Great record, but it undoubtedly was the lowest-fi #1 Billboard hit of the Rock Era (or earlier)!

Does the original 45 have that drop-out at about 51
seconds in on the word, "Daddy"? I think pretty much
every CD I have with the song has it.

Dan:

Yes, that Grand Canyon of a dropout has been there since day one on the original 45.

Andy:

Maybe we should start a rumor! "Well, no wonder 'Quarter To Three' was never in stereo!" ;)

"Quarter To Three" could make for a great Jeopardy! answer: "This 'timely' 1961 hit simultaneously achieved both the highest of high (#1) and the lowest of fi (fidelity)."
