my commercial 45 for the fats domino song 'jambalaya (on
the bayou)' issued as imperial 5796 lists the run time on
the label as 2:27 but actually runs 2:21....this 45 run
time s/b added to the db...

On the box set, They Call Me The Fat Man, this song is missing the reverb found on the 45. The song appears with the reverb on the Ace UK CD, The Imperial Singles Volume 5 1962-1964. I don't have any of the other CDs listed in the database.

Does the Ace CD more or less accurately reflect the original 45s? I have had the box set for 25 years probably but rarely play it past the first disc or so because a lot of it just sounds wrong to my ears.

Ace issued Domino's Imperial 45s over five CDs, of which I only have volumes 4 and 5. I don't have all the Imperial 45s, but as far as I can tell the Ace CDs contain the 45 versions, mixes, and edits with the exception of "Natural Born Lover", as Ed pointed out in the thread about this song in 2014. (the 45 is an edit of the Ace version).
The They Call Me The Fat Man box did not stay in print very long. It was soon replaced by the Walking To New Orleans box (which I don't have) after Capital claimed to have found better tapes.

I'm pretty sure I remember it being the first cut out box set I saw, not terribly long after it was issued, so that makes sense.

Also, bear in mind the playing time differences may be
speed related. As Imperial used Bunny Robyn at Radio
Recorders for mastering, as Lew Chudd (Imperial's founder
and CEO) often had these recordings sped up for 45 RPM and
LP release. And this is also likely where the reverb was
added. So, the slower version without reverb may well be
the raw master takes without post processing.
