In another thread on the chat board, people were discussing '70s and '80s hits recorded in Spanish. I decided to start a separate thread for this specific discussion and to compile the songs I know of that have been recorded in Spanish. "The Way I Want to Touch You" was also recorded in Spanish and was on a Japanese C&T compilation.
As was mentioned in the other thread, their whole "Love Will Keep Us Together" album was recorded in Spanish. The Spanish version of "The Good Songs" from that album was the B-side of "Muskrat Love." |

Although this topic is of no personal interest, in the past, I have known of
one or two fellow music enthusiasts who were totally into this "foreign versions" topic. And they would introduce/re-introduce it at the slightest opportunity. To each his own! :) Over the years, however, a few of them had either come in to the station, or I'd found a stock copy on the cheap somewhere. Not knowing how/where to file them, I started a small "Foreign versions of hits" area. There are currently only seven 45s in this category, although I know that the Young Rascals did release "Groovin' (Spanish Version)" and "Groovin' (Italian Version)" as a stock 45 (Atlantic 2428) back in 1967. I don't own that 45, but there is a scan for it on 45cat.com, and I do have both versions on a 6-CD Rhino Handmade Rascals box set. Two of my 7 45s have been mentioned upthread, but I'll include them here as well, for their full 45 details. Here they are, from oldest to newest: -Captain & Tennille-"Como Yo Quiero Sentirte (The Way I Want To Touch You)" (A&M 1774) (stock copy, with a Spanish version of "Broddy Bounce" on the flip) -Linda Ronstadt-"Lago Azul (Blue Bayou)" (Asylum 45464) (promo copy; same version on both sides) -Kenny Rogers-"Lady" (Spanish Version produced by Jose Silva) (Liberty 1397) (stock copy, with the English version of "Sweet Music Man" on the flip) -Police-"De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da (Spanish Version)"/"De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da (Japanese Version)" (A&M 25000-S) (this is definitely a U.S. specialty 45 release. It is surely a promo 45, although there's no specific mention of "Promotional copy-Not for sale" anywhere on it. The above stock # is totally unique, and in no way resembles its A&M 2275 stock 45 #. It also has the UK/Euro small 45 size hole, clearly as an homage to its contents.) -Toni Basil-"Mickey (Spanish Version)" (Chrysalis 2665) (stock copy, with the English Version of "Thief On The Loose" on the flip) -Suzanne Vega-"Luka (Version en Espanol)"/"Luka (English Version)" (A&M 35084) (stock copy - not sure how I acquired it - my guess is that my 45 copy was pressed in the U.S., and was then sold in Central/South America, etc., because the label says A y M Discos, not A&M Records.) So I'm not 100% sure if it "officially" qualifies here. -Brenda K. Starr-"Yo Creo En Ti (I Still Believe)" (MCA 17525) (promo copy; same version on both sides) I imagine that free online sites like 45cat, Discogs, etc. would be a virtual treasure trove for discovering many other such songs. I believe 45cat is even based out of the UK, but they are very good at separating 45 releases by individual country. Happy hunting! |

What's great about the umbrella of "Top 40 Music on Compact Disc" is that this topic isn't even off-topic for this board. Some people talk about the single versions, the album versions, the neither versions, the extended versions, the alternate versions, the vinyl versions, the failed attempts (and noble attempts!) at re-creating a single edit, the remixes, the re-recordings, the foreign-language versions ... it's all TOP 40 music on CD! And all these "other" versions are "stay-aways" for some and "exactly what I've been looking for" for others. :) |

My goodness, this thread could actually grow to massive
size if we go back to the 60's, I know a lot of Motown hits were also record in Spanish but I don't have a list. But i'll throw in these few that are in my "Foreign" folder: Barbra Streisand - Evergreen (Love Theme From 'A Star Is Born') (In Spanish) '77 Beach Boys - Kokomo (Spanish Version) '88 Carpenters - Canta ('Sing' in Spanish) '73 Gloria Gaynor - Yo Vivire (I Will Survive) '78 Boyz II Men - Al Final Del Camino (End Of The Road) I think the Boyz did quite a few of their hits in Spanish, not sure which ones though. Both on CD... Evergreen was on the CD single or "I Finally Found Someone," and I'm quite sure the Spanish version of "Those Were the Days" was a bonus track on the remaster of her first album. |

I just checked my "Postcard" CD and saw the last 2 tracks are: Those Were the Days (Quelli Erano Giorni) Those Were the Days (En Aquellos Dias) I assume "En Aquellos Dias" is the Spanish version, but what is "Quelli Erano Giorni"? Italian? French? |

Actually, I just saw that Mark wrote the Spanish version of "Those Were the Days" is called "Que Tiempo Tan Feliz" - which isn't on "Postcard" at all. Does anyone know if that's on CD?
And so what language is "En Aquellos Dias?" I assume that translates to something like "In Those Days" - and "En" and "Dias" are spanish words as far as I know. But I guess this isn't it! |

David Lee Roth - "That's Life" "Asi Es La Vida". B side of promo single of the English version (not sure what was on the B side of stock copies, think it was something else). Jets - "Alla Tu" (Make It Real Both sides of promo single S45-17526, which seems to be a non-standard MCA catalog #. It's a U.S. pressing though. |

Culture Club - The War Song - the b-side to the 45 was La Cancion de Guerra.
Right Said Fred - I'm Too Sexy - the b-side was a Spanish version as well The stock copy for David Lee Roth's "That's Life" featured Bump And Grind on the B-side. The previous single, "Goin' Crazy" featured a spanish language version "Loco del Color". Then again, DLR did put out a spanish language version of his Eat 'em And Smile album, which would mean that there's also a Spanish language version of Yankee Rose. |

Gordon, "En Aquellos Dias" is an alternate title for "Que Tiempo Tan Feliz." They're both the same recording. "Que Tiempo Tan Feliz" is on the 'Apple Records Extras' set included within the 17-disc various artists The Apple Records Box Set, which also has the Italian, German and French versions of the song. (Yes, a 17-CD Apple Records box that still manages to omit Mary's top-40 hit "Temma Harbour.") The wikipedia article on the Eat 'Em And Smile album has information on the Spanish-language version, which was called Sonrisa Salvaje. The Spanish-language version of "Yankee Rose" did not have a translated title, but was simply called "Yankee Rose". Every other song on the album had its title translated or otherwise rendered into a Spanish equivalent.

I have a 2-track promo CD for the Scorpions "Wind Of Change" (CDP 448), which has the "Edit" (3:42) as track 1 and "Spanish Version" (5:10) as track 2. Turns out the 2 Robbie Dupree songs in Spanish are available on CD on a comp of his called "Vintage Vol. 2".
And "Kokomo" is on the German CD-single of "California Dreamin'" (although I wouldn't be surprised if it's on something else as well.) And "I Will Survive" (Spanish) is on CD as well, still awaiting details for the CD title on this one. And it's still unclear if Carpenters' "Canta" exists only in Spanglish or also in Spanish, but I have a call in to a Carpenters expert who might very well know. |

Hmmm, consecutive catalog nos. - both being top 20 hits from the Spring/Summer of '88. (Thanks for the leads on these, jimct & Hykker.) So, this would obviously beg the following: Who else on MCA was riding high in the top 20 at that time??? (*checks Whitburn's Pop Annual*) While I have no proof at this time, this would suggest that MCA S45-17524 may very well have been Belinda Carlisle's version of "Circle in the Sand" in Spanish, w/ MCA S45-17527 being Pebbles doing "Mercedes Boy" in Spanish (the latter being one I'd love to hear & own, if it exists!). Or did MCA wait until the Fall of '88 before issuing its next Spanish promo 45, reserving S45-17527 for Sir Elton's "A Song..." - er, "Word in Spanish"??? ;-) My research indicates that the Spanish version of "Make it Real" on MCA S45-17526 was also released commercially here in the U.S. on the 12" single for the song, issued on MCA 23859 (which also featured a Spanglish version). On the other hand, the Spanish version of "I Still Believe" appears to be exclusive to MCA S45-17525 - at least here in the U.S., anyway... |

Indeed, it's available on several imports, the most common being the 2013 re-issue of the song's original 1978 parent album, Love Tracks, on the U.K. label Big Break Records (BBR), which is still in print. In addition, it turns out the Spanish version of "I Will Survive" has appeared on ONE U.S. CD to date, which I just acquired myself - but alas, it's pretty rare, as it's a promo-only maxi-single, and thus doesn't qualify for Pat's database... The hit English version of "I Will Survive" featured prominently in the 1994 film, "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert". In fact, if you check Pat's book/database, you'll see that the soundtrack on Mother/Island 314516937 included not one, but TWO versions of the song: the original English 45 version clocking in at (3:16), as well as an English "1993 remix" timed at (4:50). Well, at the time, it seems the label decided to also issue a promo-only CD maxi-single for "I Will Survive", on Mother/Island PRCD 6891-2. Contents as follows, which includes TWO Spanish versions: track 1: original 7" version (listed 3:15) track 2: spanish 7" version (listed & actual 3:56) track 3: 1993 phil kelsey classic 7" mix (listed 3:46) track 4: 1993 phil kelsey classic 12" mix (listed 7:52) track 5: spanish 12" version (listed 7:56/actual 7:51) Track 5 is the original recording that first appeared on the commercial U.S. 12" single back in 1979, on Polydor 512. However, track 2 apparently didn't exist back in 1978-79, as I've found no evidence of a 7" Spanish version from that time (domestic or import), and indeed, the copyright date in the fine print found on the back insert of this promo CD reads "1994" for this particular track, so this was clearly made in the mid '90s, specifically for this promo CD (although it does sound like it was derived from the original 1979 12"). Definitely not - there are multiple edits involved, and the first is right at the very beginning. On the English 45 version, the English LP version, and the Spanish 12" version (track 5 on PRCD 6891-2), the song starts off w/ a piano flourish, before Gloria's vocals chime in at the :06 mark. However, the 1994 Spanish 7" version (track 2 on PRCD 6891-2) chops off the :06 piano intro, and immediately starts w/ Gloria's vocals - it's a little jarring, actually. The Spanish 7" version is then otherwise identical to the Spanish 12" version up until the 3:07 mark (corresponding w/ the 3:13 mark on the 12"), where a second edit occurs. At this point, the 12" version goes into an extended instrumental break, while the 7" version goes into a shorter horn break w/ Gloria shrieking "Ohh!", before heading into some additional vocal verses, and wrapping up at 3:56. (There's at least one other edit during this last 49 seconds of the 7" as well.) Although I'm FAR from being the best here when it comes to determining mix differences, to my ears, it sounds like there are strictly edits involved, and therefore, the 1994 3:56 Spanish 7" version can most likely be created/extracted from the original 1979 7:51 Spanish 12" version... And while investigating this for you, I discovered another interesting fact about this song: According to Pat's database, despite its appearance on OVER 100 U.S. CDs to date, the original 4:55-ish English LP version has NEVER been featured! And while the song's original 1978 parent album, Love Tracks, has been re-issued on CD twice in Japan over the years (1992 & 2008), according to Discogs, in both cases, those Japanese versions substituted the 8:00-ish 12" version of "I Will Survive" in place of the 4:55 original. Therefore, last year's expanded re-issue on the U.K. BBR label appears to be the only place you can currently obtain the LP version on CD(!) - so in addition to getting the 1979 Spanish 12" version, that's one more good reason to probably grab it (don't know if it's "brickwalled", though)... |

Okay, here we go: I've confirmed the existence of Spanish-language versions of the following. So far, they are only the ones that were issued in some form or another here in the U.S. However, I do intend to eventually add the foreign-only releases as well, once additional research proves that's the only way certain titles exist. This is still very much a work in progress, but I must thank cftp up front for his extensive lists (see the http://www.top40musiconcd.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8008&KW=captain - "Do That To Me One More Time" thread), and EdisonLite for launching this new thread during my absence over the last five weeks. (When I first started this project last Fall, I thought the list would be about 30-40 titles at most, so this has now officially grown much bigger than I'd initially anticipated!) For my own purposes, I'm limiting my listings to only the '70s & '80s (will probably eventually add the '90s as well), and while not sticking to just top 40 hits, I will draw the line at CHART hits. :-) They are organized by category, and then listed chronologically within that category. Dates given are all based on Pat's methodology of peak popularity, where applicable (as a few on the list below did miss the top 40) - songs may have actually been recorded & released the year prior. All 45s & 12" singles do exist as commercial copies w/ a B-side, not just as double-sided promos! Spanish wording for the titles is exactly as printed on the U.S. records; my research sometimes showed that import copies of the same recordings actually had different Spanish wording, as there is usually more than one way to translate English to Spanish. If the Spanish-language version is available on CD, all known U.S. CDs are listed (many not in Pat's database at this time); promo CD singles are only referenced if no known commercial CDs exist. If no known domestic CDs could be found, then I've listed at least one import as an option, where known. Picture sleeves & other unusual facts are all noted as well. I realize that at this time, this is essentially just a more detailed list of various titles that I (and other board members) have already mentioned, but hopefully other fans/collectors will find some good info here (okay, not that I think there are a lot of collectors of Andy Williams & Perry Como around here, but hey, "(Where Do I Begin) Love Story" and "And I Love You So" were BOTH top 40 hits!)...

I also noticed that the U.S. CD of David Lee Roth's Sonrisa Salvaje is apparently back in print, so I ordered one, and it just arrived a few days ago. As detailed in my post from 13 May 2014 above, it's a 2007 re-issue of his Spanish-language album from 1986, on Friday Music FRM-1053, although I noticed that my copy has an "RE-1" in the matrix no. in the center ring. It includes the Spanish-language version of "Yankee Rose", which is track 1. If Pat wishes to add it immediately, I can report that it has an actual time of (3:45). Will post this info in the proper "Yankee Rose" thread as well...
Oh, and while they both missed the top 40, Sonrisa Salvaje also features Spanish-language versions of DLR's two follow-ups: "Goin' Crazy!" EdisonLite noted this one in his initial list when he launched this thread - which was new to me at the time - but now I have it as well, and can share additional details. It's regarding Glenn Medeiros' Spanish-language version of his 1987 hit, "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You"...
When his self-titled debut album was released that year, the original pressings in ALL THREE formats (i.e., vinyl LP, cassette, & CD) featured only nine tracks, and only the hit English version of "NGCMLFY". (Bought the cassette myself at the time.) The CD edition was on Amherst AMH 93313, and the front cover pictured Medeiros standing on some steps w/ pink railings. Pat does already show this original in the on-line db... By 1990, Medeiros had signed w/ a major label, and they also elected to self-title his new album that year, on MCA 6399. Of course, that 1990 album ended up doing even better, landing him two additional top 40 hits, the former going all the way to #1: "She Ain't Worth It" (ftg. Bobby Brown) and "All I'm Missing is You" (ftg. Ray Parker, Jr.)... In response to that album's success, Amherst went back and re-issued the 1987 album by the end of 1990, but made three major changes in the process: 1) The front cover art was now a close-up of Medeiros in a white shirt w/ his hand under his chin, 2) They re-titled it after its hit, Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You (to avoid confusion w/ MCA 6399), and 3) They added two bonus tracks, which were Spanish-language versions of "NGCMLFY" and "You're My Woman, You're My Lady" ("Si Me Faltas"), for a total of 11. The CD edition of this re-issue is on Amherst AMH 94401, and is still in print to this day. It's the version I just obtained, and while Pat DOES currently show the English version in the on-line db (which tells me he has this CD already), he neglects to list the Spanish-language version as well. It's track 5 ("Nada Cambiara Mi Amor Por Ti"), and I can report that it has an actual time of (4:07). Will post this info in the proper "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You" thread as well... As a Hawaiian, he actually recorded a Japanese-language version of "NGCMLFY" as well! While it hasn't yet appeared on any U.S. CDs, it's included on the later Japanese versions of his 1987 s/t debut. Well, thanks to some additional research as well as patience, it seems I sorta got my wish. :-) In the last few months, I've discovered at least TWO additional V/A CD compilations devoted entirely to Spanish-language versions of hits! Both consist of a combination of recordings by the original artist that had the hit English-language version in the U.S., as well as covers by other acts. However, both are imports, so unlike Polydor 314 525 734-2 (described in detail above in my previous post), they're ineligible for inclusion in Pat's on-line db. I've recently acquired copies of both CDs, and thought I'd go ahead and post full details here, for others who may also be interested - especially since BOTH include some versions by the original artists that have NOT been previously mentioned in either this thread or the one for "Do That To Me One More Time"! Interestingly, the first one is from Mexico, and also titled Stars in Spanish, but is NOT to be confused w/ the previously-discussed U.S. release of the same name on Polydor 314 525 734-2 (although they do actually share three of the same songs). It's on SGB Records CDID 7378, from 2007, and features 19 tracks. The back insert features the "HECHO EN MEXICO" ("MADE IN MEXICO") logo, but also states "Printed in USA" in the fine print, as well as on the CD itself; the label (SGB Records) has a Los Angeles address, and claims to be manufactured & distributed by UMVD. No one should consider "La Canción De Guerra" to be the Spanish-language version of "The War Song". Both songs are sung in English. The only difference is one line: "Guerra,
guerra estúpida, aquí la gente es estúpida" replaces "War, war is stupid and people are stupid". That's it. The "Ultimate Dance Mix" includes both lines, plus the Japanese- language line: "Senso hant-ai, Senso hant-ai". There were also a French version ("La Chanson de Guerre") and a German version ("Der Kriegsgesang"). |

Classic Singles". 18 Songs in Italian, 8 in German, 4 in French and 8 in Spanish. These appear to be all 60's songs, with the exception of the last two songs. Also issued on a Commercial Cassette Single in the US. 1994 All-4-One - Muy Enamorados (Spanish Version of "So Much In Love"). 1994 All-4-One - Jurare (Spanish Version of "I Swear"). According to Discogs, this was issued as a CD Single in Spain with the English Version as the B-Side. 1995 All-4-One - Yo Te Voy A Querer (Spanish Version of "I Can Love You Like That"). According to Discogs, this was issued in Germany on a Promo CD Single. Also, although Discogs has no listing for it, the above three songs appear on a commercial CD Single in the US. (Atlantic/Blitz-87098). It was also issued as a commercial Cassette Single. The Color Me Badd promo seems to be extremely rare. I've been waiting for it to come up on Discogs and I have yet to see it available at all on eBay. Someone from this group shared with me a flac that clearly used a tape source, but the flac comes from an mp3, as it tops out at 16k. It's clearly from tape though. So I'm guessing someone somewhere along the way made an mp3 of this, from CD. Hope someone knows or has the CD, as I'd like to upgrade to lossless. |

Does anyone know where the Spanish version of Anne Murray's "Broken Hearted Me" appears on CD? I have a lossless (from tape) file from Ron, but I'm still curious where it caem from. You can hear it in full (from tape!) here:

But I don't know of any Anne Murray CD from 1995 that has the spanish version. I have all of her reissues that were released as 2-fers but I don't recall bonus cuts being on any of them. |

Before it was released on digital, I had a bootleg version of the Spanish language version ripped from (I assume) whatever vinyl release it originated on and it also switched back to English on the final chorus. All the tracks on Divas En Español are taken from master tapes. Even though Tina Arena's song "Burn" failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, the Spanish-language version is also available on the Latin-American CD releases of In Deep (the parent album for "Burn"), which also contain a Spanish-language version of "Now I Can Dance". https://www.discogs.com/Tina-Arena-In- Deep/release/8555315 (Discogs entry for the Mexican CD release of Tina Arena's album In Deep). Backstreet Boys - "Donde Quieras Yo Iré" (Anywhere for You) This was included as a bonus track on the Latin American/Spanish releases of Backstreet Boys (the European 1996 release with the red cover) and the compilation The Hits: Chapter One. This was also included in several UK CD singles. Even though "Anywhere for You" failed to chart in the US, I decided to mention its Spanish-language version here. |

Just FYI, Linda Ronstadt's "Lago Azul" (spanish version
of "Blue Bayou") was finally released as a bonus track of the digital (Deluxe) edition of "Canciones de mi padre": https://www.qobuz.com/nz-en/album/canciones-de-mi-padre- linda-ronstadt/dreqq18zf0z7a I'm not an expert, but it sounds like a transfer from master tape, not vinyl (which was for decades the only source for any of us). |

The Spanish-language version of "Anything for You", titled "No Te Olvidaré", was also included on the Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine promo compilation Hits (ESK 1336), which came out in 1988. https://www.discogs.com/release/3138011-Gloria-Estefan- And- Miami-Sound-Machine-Hits In that promo compilation, track 10 is listed as the "Spanglish Version", but it's actually the Spanish one. |

"Todo Lo Que Hago Lo Hago Por Ti" (actual name of the Spanish-language version of 'Everything I Do ...') is available on the 1995 V/A compilation Stars in Spanish (Polydor, 314 525 734-2), which was released in the USA. https://www.discogs.com/release/1819636-Various-Stars-In- Spanish The track is also available on a Mexican V/A compilation which is also titled Stars in Spanish (SGB Records, CDID 7378), but is different from the one which came out in 1995. |
