In another thread on the chat board, people were discussing '70s and '80s hits recorded in Spanish. "The Way I Want to Touch You" was also recorded in Spanish and was on a Japanese C&T compilation.

As was mentioned in the other thread, their whole "Love Will Keep Us Together" album was recorded in Spanish. The Spanish version of "The Good Songs" from that album was the B-side of "Muskrat Love."

Although this topic is of no personal interest, in the past, I have known of
one or two fellow music enthusiasts who were totally into this "foreign
versions" topic. And they would introduce/re-introduce it at the slightest
opportunity. To each his own!   :)

Over the years, however, a few of them had either come in to the station,
or I'd found a stock copy on the cheap somewhere. Not knowing
how/where to file them, I started a small "Foreign versions of hits" area.
There are currently only seven 45s in this category, although I know that
the Young Rascals did release "Groovin' (Spanish Version)" and "Groovin'
(Italian Version)" as a stock 45 (Atlantic 2428) back in 1967. I don't own
that 45, but there is a scan for it on 45cat.com, and I do have both
versions on a 6-CD Rhino Handmade Rascals box set. Two of my 7 45s
have been mentioned upthread, but I'll include them here as well, for their
full 45 details. Here they are, from oldest to newest:

-Captain & Tennille-"Como Yo Quiero Sentirte (The Way I Want To Touch
You)" (A&M 1774) (stock copy, with a Spanish version of "Broddy Bounce"
on the flip)

-Linda Ronstadt-"Lago Azul (Blue Bayou)" (Asylum 45464) (promo copy;
same version on both sides)

-Kenny Rogers-"Lady" (Spanish Version produced by Jose Silva) (Liberty
1397) (stock copy, with the English version of "Sweet Music Man" on the
flip)

-Police-"De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da (Spanish Version)"/"De Do Do Do, De
Da Da Da (Japanese Version)" (A&M 25000-S) (this is definitely a U.S.
specialty 45 release. It is surely a promo 45, although there's no specific
mention of "Promotional copy-Not for sale" anywhere on it. The above
stock # is totally unique, and in no way resembles its A&M 2275 stock 45
#. It also has the UK/Euro small 45 size hole, clearly as an homage to its
contents.)

-Toni Basil-"Mickey (Spanish Version)" (Chrysalis 2665) (stock copy, with
the English Version of "Thief On The Loose" on the flip)

-Suzanne Vega-"Luka (Version en Espanol)"/"Luka (English Version)" (A&M
35084) (stock copy - not sure how I acquired it - my guess is that my 45
copy was pressed in the U.S., and was then sold in Central/South America,
etc., because the label says A y M Discos, not A&M Records.) So I'm not
100% sure if it "officially" qualifies here.

-Brenda K. Starr-"Yo Creo En Ti (I Still Believe)" (MCA 17525) (promo copy;
same version on both sides)

I imagine that free online sites like 45cat, Discogs, etc. would be a virtual
treasure trove for discovering many other such songs. I believe 45cat is
even based out of the UK, but they are very good at separating 45
releases by individual country. Happy hunting!

I just remembered that Smokey Robinson's "Being With You" was recorded in Spanish (Aqui Con Tigo) so I added it to my list above. (There was also a Spanglish version).

What's great about the umbrella of "Top 40 Music on Compact Disc" is that this topic isn't even off-topic for this board. Some people talk about the single versions, the album versions, the neither versions, the extended versions, the alternate versions, the vinyl versions, the failed attempts (and noble attempts!) at re-creating a single edit, the remixes, the re-recordings, the foreign-language versions ... it's all TOP 40 music on CD! And all these "other" versions are "stay-aways" for some and "exactly what I've been looking for" for others. :)

My goodness, this thread could actually grow to massive
size if we go back to the 60's, I know a lot of Motown
hits were also record in Spanish but I don't have a list.
But i'll throw in these few that are in my "Foreign"
folder:

Barbra Streisand - Evergreen (Love Theme From 'A Star Is
Born') (In Spanish) '77
Beach Boys - Kokomo (Spanish Version) '88
Carpenters - Canta ('Sing' in Spanish) '73
Gloria Gaynor - Yo Vivire (I Will Survive) '78
Boyz II Men - Al Final Del Camino (End Of The Road)

I think the Boyz did quite a few of their hits in
Spanish, not sure which ones though.

Edited to add:

Mary Hopkin - Que Tiempo Tan Feliz ('Those Were the Days'
in Spanish)

Both on CD... Evergreen was on the CD single or "I Finally Found Someone," and I'm quite sure the Spanish version of "Those Were the Days" was a bonus track on the remaster of her first album.

I just found that I have "Canta/Sing" on the Carpenters 4 CD boxed set, but it's Spanglish. Is there an all Spanish version of this? on vinyl or CD?

I just checked my "Postcard" CD and saw the last 2 tracks are:

Those Were the Days (Quelli Erano Giorni)
Those Were the Days (En Aquellos Dias)

I assume "En Aquellos Dias" is the Spanish version, but what is "Quelli Erano Giorni"? Italian? French?

Actually, I just saw that Mark wrote the Spanish version of "Those Were the Days" is called "Que Tiempo Tan Feliz" - which isn't on "Postcard" at all. Does anyone know if that's on CD?

And so what language is "En Aquellos Dias?" I assume that translates to something like "In Those Days" - and "En" and "Dias" are spanish words as far as I know. But I guess this isn't it!

Here are a couple more:
David Lee Roth - "That's Life" "Asi Es La Vida".
B side of promo single of the English version (not sure
what was on the B side of stock copies, think it was
something else).

Jets - "Alla Tu" (Make It Real Both sides of
promo single S45-17526, which seems to be a non-standard
MCA catalog #. It's a U.S. pressing though.

Culture Club - The War Song - the b-side to the 45 was La Cancion de Guerra.
Right Said Fred - I'm Too Sexy - the b-side was a Spanish version as well

The stock copy for David Lee Roth's "That's Life" featured Bump And Grind on the B-side. The previous single, "Goin' Crazy" featured a spanish language version "Loco del Color". Then again, DLR did put out a spanish language version of his Eat 'em And Smile album, which would mean that there's also a Spanish language version of Yankee Rose.

Gordon, "En Aquellos Dias" is an alternate title for "Que Tiempo Tan Feliz." They're both the same recording.

"Que Tiempo Tan Feliz" is on the 'Apple Records Extras' set included within the 17-disc various artists The Apple Records Box Set, which also has the Italian, German and French versions of the song. (Yes, a 17-CD Apple Records box that still manages to omit Mary's top-40 hit "Temma Harbour.")

There's also apparently a Japanese import Post Card CD with the "En Aquellos Dias" title and the Italian version as bonus tracks:

The wikipedia article on the Eat 'Em And Smile album has information on the Spanish-language version, which was called Sonrisa Salvaje. The Spanish-language version of "Yankee Rose" did not have a translated title, but was simply called "Yankee Rose". Every other song on the album had its title translated or otherwise rendered into a Spanish equivalent.

I have a 2-track promo CD for the Scorpions "Wind Of Change" (CDP 448), which has the "Edit" (3:42) as track 1 and "Spanish Version" (5:10) as track 2. They also recorded a version in Russian, but I don't believe it was ever issued in the US.

Turns out the 2 Robbie Dupree songs in Spanish are available on CD on a comp of his called "Vintage Vol. 2".

And "Kokomo" is on the German CD-single of "California Dreamin'" (although I wouldn't be surprised if it's on something else as well.)

And "I Will Survive" (Spanish) is on CD as well, still awaiting details for the CD title on this one.

And it's still unclear if Carpenters' "Canta" exists only in Spanglish or also in Spanish, but I have a call in to a Carpenters expert who might very well know.

I received "Mas Amor" by Kim Carnes on 45 today. I figured this version would be a B-side of a promo or perhaps the B-side of a later Carnes single. But surprisingly, it was an A-side in itself.

Hmmm, consecutive catalog nos. - both being top 20 hits from the Spring/Summer of '88. (Thanks for the leads on these, jimct & Hykker.) So, this would obviously beg the following: Who else on MCA was riding high in the top 20 at that time??? (*checks Whitburn's Pop Annual*) While I have no proof at this time, this would suggest that MCA S45-17524 may very well have been Belinda Carlisle's version of "Circle in the Sand" in Spanish, w/ MCA S45-17527 being Pebbles doing "Mercedes Boy" in Spanish (the latter being one I'd love to hear & own, if it exists!). Or did MCA wait until the Fall of '88 before issuing its next Spanish promo 45, reserving S45-17527 for Sir Elton's "A Song..." - er, "Word in Spanish"??? ;-)

My research indicates that the Spanish version of "Make it Real" on MCA S45-17526 was also released commercially here in the U.S. on the 12" single for the song, issued on MCA 23859 (which also featured a Spanglish version). On the other hand, the Spanish version of "I Still Believe" appears to be exclusive to MCA S45-17525 - at least here in the U.S., anyway...

Indeed, it's available on several imports, the most common being the 2013 re-issue of the song's original 1978 parent album, Love Tracks, on the U.K. label Big Break Records (BBR), which is still in print. In addition, it turns out the Spanish version of "I Will Survive" has appeared on ONE U.S. CD to date, which I just acquired myself - but alas, it's pretty rare, as it's a promo-only maxi-single, and thus doesn't qualify for Pat's database...

The hit English version of "I Will Survive" featured prominently in the 1994 film, "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert". In fact, if you check Pat's book/database, you'll see that the soundtrack on Mother/Island 314516937 included not one, but TWO versions of the song: the original English 45 version clocking in at (3:16), as well as an English "1993 remix" timed at (4:50). Well, at the time, it seems the label decided to also issue a promo-only CD maxi-single for "I Will Survive", on Mother/Island PRCD 6891-2. Contents as follows, which includes TWO Spanish versions:

track 1: original 7" version (listed 3:15)
track 2: spanish 7" version (listed & actual 3:56)
track 3: 1993 phil kelsey classic 7" mix (listed 3:46)
track 4: 1993 phil kelsey classic 12" mix (listed 7:52)
track 5: spanish 12" version (listed 7:56/actual 7:51)

Track 5 is the original recording that first appeared on the commercial U.S. 12" single back in 1979, on Polydor 512. However, track 2 apparently didn't exist back in 1978-79, as I've found no evidence of a 7" Spanish version from that time (domestic or import), and indeed, the copyright date in the fine print found on the back insert of this promo CD reads "1994" for this particular track, so this was clearly made in the mid '90s, specifically for this promo CD (although it does sound like it was derived from the original 1979 12"). Here are photos of PRCD 6891-2 on Discogs, including both the front & back inserts: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=2207020 - Gloria Gaynor - "I Will Survive" (1994 U.S. promo CD maxi-single)

Oh, and since my last post here on this topic, I've also acquired a U.S. commercial/stock 45 of the Spanish version of "Yes, I'm Ready" ("Listos Para Amar") by Teri DeSario with K.C., on Casablanca 2253. (The hit English version was on Casablanca 2227.) My research indicates that this one has never appeared on CD, domestic or import. The B-side is the same as Casablanca 2227, which is Teri solo on "With Your Love" (in English)...

More to follow shortly...

Is the spanish 7" version of "I Will Survive" (track 2 on that maxi single) just an early fade of the 12" version?

Definitely not - there are multiple edits involved, and the first is right at the very beginning. On the English 45 version, the English LP version, and the Spanish 12" version (track 5 on PRCD 6891-2), the song starts off w/ a piano flourish, before Gloria's vocals chime in at the :06 mark. However, the 1994 Spanish 7" version (track 2 on PRCD 6891-2) chops off the :06 piano intro, and immediately starts w/ Gloria's vocals - it's a little jarring, actually. The Spanish 7" version is then otherwise identical to the Spanish 12" version up until the 3:07 mark (corresponding w/ the 3:13 mark on the 12"), where a second edit occurs. At this point, the 12" version goes into an extended instrumental break, while the 7" version goes into a shorter horn break w/ Gloria shrieking "Ohh!", before heading into some additional vocal verses, and wrapping up at 3:56. (There's at least one other edit during this last 49 seconds of the 7" as well.) Although I'm FAR from being the best here when it comes to determining mix differences, to my ears, it sounds like there are strictly edits involved, and therefore, the 1994 3:56 Spanish 7" version can most likely be created/extracted from the original 1979 7:51 Spanish 12" version...

And while investigating this for you, I discovered another interesting fact about this song: According to Pat's database, despite its appearance on OVER 100 U.S. CDs to date, the original 4:55-ish English LP version has NEVER been featured! And while the song's original 1978 parent album, Love Tracks, has been re-issued on CD twice in Japan over the years (1992 & 2008), according to Discogs, in both cases, those Japanese versions substituted the 8:00-ish 12" version of "I Will Survive" in place of the 4:55 original. Therefore, last year's expanded re-issue on the U.K. BBR label appears to be the only place you can currently obtain the LP version on CD(!) - so in addition to getting the 1979 Spanish 12" version, that's one more good reason to probably grab it (don't know if it's "brickwalled", though)...

Thanks for the info. Other than the missing piano intro on the 1994 Spanish 7" version, do the edits on this match up with the edits on the English-language 7" version (which was not a fade of the LP or 12" version, according to the database, which I just checked.)

Okay, here we go: I've confirmed the existence of Spanish-language versions of the following. So far, they are only the ones that were issued in some form or another here in the U.S. However, I do intend to eventually add the foreign-only releases as well, once additional research proves that's the only way certain titles exist. This is still very much a work in progress, but I must thank cftp up front for his extensive lists (see the http://www.top40musiconcd.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8008&KW=captain - "Do That To Me One More Time" thread), and EdisonLite for launching this new thread during my absence over the last five weeks. (When I first started this project last Fall, I thought the list would be about 30-40 titles at most, so this has now officially grown much bigger than I'd initially anticipated!) For my own purposes, I'm limiting my listings to only the '70s & '80s (will probably eventually add the '90s as well), and while not sticking to just top 40 hits, I will draw the line at CHART hits. :-) They are organized by category, and then listed chronologically within that category. Dates given are all based on Pat's methodology of peak popularity, where applicable (as a few on the list below did miss the top 40) - songs may have actually been recorded & released the year prior. All 45s & 12" singles do exist as commercial copies w/ a B-side, not just as double-sided promos! Spanish wording for the titles is exactly as printed on the U.S. records; my research sometimes showed that import copies of the same recordings actually had different Spanish wording, as there is usually more than one way to translate English to Spanish. If the Spanish-language version is available on CD, all known U.S. CDs are listed (many not in Pat's database at this time); promo CD singles are only referenced if no known commercial CDs exist. If no known domestic CDs could be found, then I've listed at least one import as an option, where known. Picture sleeves & other unusual facts are all noted as well. I realize that at this time, this is essentially just a more detailed list of various titles that I (and other board members) have already mentioned, but hopefully other fans/collectors will find some good info here (okay, not that I think there are a lot of collectors of Andy Williams & Perry Como around here, but hey, "(Where Do I Begin) Love Story" and "And I Love You So" were BOTH top 40 hits!)...

The following were all issued on separate commercial U.S. 45s at the same time as their hit English counterparts:

1971 ANDY WILLIAMS - "Music from Across the Way" (Spanish version)/"(Where Do I Begin) Love Story" (Spanish version) (COLUMBIA 45533) (English versions = COLUMBIA 45531 & 45317, respectively)

1973 PERRY COMO - "Te Quiero Asi" ("And I Love You So") (ARCANO 9151) (on one U.S. CD: Just Out of Reach: Rarities from Nashville on Real Gone Music 0191 from 2013) (English version = RCA VICTOR 0906)

1975 THE CAPTAIN & TENNILLE - "Por Amor Viviremos" ("Love Will Keep Us Together") (A&M 1715) (hit #49 BB/#57 CB in its own right!) (on one U.S. CD: Ultimate Collection on Hip-O 314520901 from 2001) (English version = A&M 1672) (also on duo's all-Spanish album Por Amor Viviremos)

1975 MORRIS ALBERT - "Dime" ("Feelings") (AUDIO LATINO 577) (label variations exist) (on at least one import CD: Purasangre: Carrera de Exitos 2 by V/A on Sony Music 507013 from 2002 in Chile) (English version = RCA VICTOR 10279) (also on his all-Spanish album After We've Left Each Other)

1975 THE CAPTAIN & TENNILLE - "Como Yo Quiero Sentirte" ("The Way I Want to Touch You") (A&M 1774) (on at least one import CD: A&M Digitally Remastered Best on A&M POCM-1577 from 1998 in Japan) (English version = A&M 1624 & 1725) (also on duo's all-Spanish album Por Amor Viviremos)

1977 LINDA RONSTADT - "Lago Azul" ("Blue Bayou") (ASYLUM 45464) (English version = ASYLUM 45431) (also featured on B-side of some promo 12" singles issued on ASYLUM 45431 in colored vinyl; plays at 45 rpm)

1981 SMOKEY ROBINSON - "Aqui Con Tigo" ("Being With You") (TAMLA 54325) (B-side is Spanglish version) (on one U.S. CD: The Solo Albums: Vol. 6 on Hip-O Select B0016198 from 2011) (English version = TAMLA 54321)

1982 TONI BASIL - "Mickey" (Spanish version) (CHRYSALIS 2665 w/ ps) (on two U.S. CDs: Living in Oblivion: The 80's Greatest Hits Volume Two by V/A on EMI 89605 from 1993 and The Best of...: Mickey and Other Love Songs on Razor & Tie 2057 from 1994) (English version = CHRYSALIS 2638)

*Whew!* Well, that's 42 singles/albums fully researched on the above list - not as lengthy as cftp's (and w/ quite a bit of overlap), but hopefully it's detailed enough for those who wish to now hunt these Spanish-language versions down on either vinyl or CD... :-)

I also want to thank Pat for listening to us here, as I noticed he's since added listings for the Spanish-language versions of the Captain & Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together" and both CDs w/ Toni Basil's "Mickey", as well as a second CD featuring KC and the Sunshine Band's "Please Don't Go" to the on-line database. :-) Here are links to photos/listings (most on Discogs) of the additional U.S. CDs found in my list above, which will also need to be added to the database (some of which I know Pat already has):

I just obtained a US promo CD single of "Al Final del Camino" by Boyz II Men ("End Of The Road" in Spanish). It was only a penny on eBay, so I went for it.

Time for some updates here... :-)

From the "Do That To Me One More Time" thread:

Originally posted by crapfromthepast crapfromthepast wrote:

You'll want to pick up the CD Stars In Spanish, which includes "Let's Get Serious" and about 10 others. It used to go for $$$$, but should have come back down to a reasonable price.

Well, it took me a little over a year, but I just acquired the above CD. I'd definitely like to thank cftp for the tip, as prior to his post, I did not know this collection existed! Thought I'd go ahead and give the full scoop, for those who may be interested - and hopefully db purposes as well, if we're being completists... :-)

Yes, Stars in Spanish is actually a U.S. CD from 1995, on Polydor 314 525 734-2, although it's long out-of-print. It has 13 tracks, 11 of which were top 40 hits in their English form, and are shown below in bold (the Zucchero and Sting songs being the only exceptions). Here are the complete contents, which I've elected to list chronologically; dates are peak years as given in Pat's on-line db (where applicable), and all timings that I've given are ACTUAL (surprise - printed times in the front booklet are quite off for some!):

1971 SANTANA - "Oye Como Va" (5:06)*
1972 MOODY BLUES - "Noches de Seda" ("Nights in White Satin") (4:16)
1980 JERMAINE JACKSON - "Let's Get Serious" (3:35)
1981 THE POLICE - "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" (4:01)
1987 ZUCCHERO - "Senza Una Donna" (4:25)**
1987 SUZANNE VEGA - "Luka" (3:49)
1987 STING - "Fragilidad" ("Fragile") (3:50)***
1990 JANET JACKSON - "Vuelve a Mi" ("Come Back to Me") (5:17)
1991 SCORPIONS - "Viento de Cambio" ("Wind of Change") (5:09)
1991 BRYAN ADAMS - "Todo Lo Que Hago Lo Hago Por Ti" ("[Everything I Do] I Do it for You") (4:06)
1993 BON JOVI - "Cama de Rosas" ("Bed of Roses") (5:04)
1995 4 P.M. (FOR POSITIVE MUSIC) - "Sukiyaki" (2:37)
1995 BOYZ II MEN - "No Dejemos Que Muera el Amor" ("Water Runs Dry") (3:19)

*live version from 1993's Sacred Fire: Live in South America album - NOT a studio recording from original year of release (1971)
**first recorded solo in 1987; became an A/C hit in 1991 when re-recorded as a duet w/ Paul Young, but failed to crack the pop charts
***cut from 1987's ...Nothing Like the Sun album; Spanish-language version featured on 1988's ...Nada Como el Sol: Selecciones Especiales en Espanol y Portugues EP

W/ only two or three exceptions, I'd never heard most of these versions before. Personally, I was most anxious to hear "Let's Get Serious", since it's a classic jam from my childhood, and it's great to have "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" as well, as it's from the same era. I also have to say how impressed I was w/ Justin Hayward on "Nights in White Satin" - w/ the song being just as old as I am (going back to the original release), it's definitely on the fringe of the earliest stuff that I collect, but there's no question it's classic, in English or Spanish!

Page for the CD on Discogs: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Stars-In-Spanish/release/1819636 - V/A - "Stars in Spanish" (U.S. CD) Now, if another label would just step up and give us another volume (or two), covering this same period... :-)

Oh, and I've also updated the info in my list from 13 May 2014 above, to reflect the availability of the songs "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" and "Luka" on U.S. CD, thanks to this collection (still haven't detailed much of the other songs yet)...

I also just acquired the U.S. CD of Sting's ...Nada Como el Sol: Selecciones Especiales en Espanol y Portugues. As detailed in my post from 13 May 2014 above, it's a five-song EP from 1988, on A&M CD 3295. It's now out-of-print, but is still quite easy to find, and thus can be had very cheap. It includes the Spanish-language version of "We'll Be Together", which is track 3 ("Si Estamos Juntos"). If Pat wishes to add it immediately, I can report that it has an actual time of (4:16). Will post this info in the proper "We'll Be Together" thread as well...

I also noticed that the U.S. CD of David Lee Roth's Sonrisa Salvaje is apparently back in print, so I ordered one, and it just arrived a few days ago. As detailed in my post from 13 May 2014 above, it's a 2007 re-issue of his Spanish-language album from 1986, on Friday Music FRM-1053, although I noticed that my copy has an "RE-1" in the matrix no. in the center ring. It includes the Spanish-language version of "Yankee Rose", which is track 1. If Pat wishes to add it immediately, I can report that it has an actual time of (3:45). Will post this info in the proper "Yankee Rose" thread as well...

Oh, and while they both missed the top 40, Sonrisa Salvaje also features Spanish-language versions of DLR's two follow-ups: "Goin' Crazy!" ("Loco del Calor!"), which is track 5, and has an actual time of (3:06), as well as "That's Life" ("Asi es la Vida"), which is track 10, and has an actual time of (2:44)...

EdisonLite noted this one in his initial list when he launched this thread - which was new to me at the time - but now I have it as well, and can share additional details. It's regarding Glenn Medeiros' Spanish-language version of his 1987 hit, "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You"...

When his self-titled debut album was released that year, the original pressings in ALL THREE formats (i.e., vinyl LP, cassette, & CD) featured only nine tracks, and only the hit English version of "NGCMLFY". (Bought the cassette myself at the time.) The CD edition was on Amherst AMH 93313, and the front cover pictured Medeiros standing on some steps w/ pink railings. Pat does already show this original in the on-line db...

By 1990, Medeiros had signed w/ a major label, and they also elected to self-title his new album that year, on MCA 6399. Of course, that 1990 album ended up doing even better, landing him two additional top 40 hits, the former going all the way to #1: "She Ain't Worth It" (ftg. Bobby Brown) and "All I'm Missing is You" (ftg. Ray Parker, Jr.)...

In response to that album's success, Amherst went back and re-issued the 1987 album by the end of 1990, but made three major changes in the process: 1) The front cover art was now a close-up of Medeiros in a white shirt w/ his hand under his chin, 2) They re-titled it after its hit, Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You (to avoid confusion w/ MCA 6399), and 3) They added two bonus tracks, which were Spanish-language versions of "NGCMLFY" and "You're My Woman, You're My Lady" ("Si Me Faltas"), for a total of 11. The CD edition of this re-issue is on Amherst AMH 94401, and is still in print to this day. It's the version I just obtained, and while Pat DOES currently show the English version in the on-line db (which tells me he has this CD already), he neglects to list the Spanish-language version as well. It's track 5 ("Nada Cambiara Mi Amor Por Ti"), and I can report that it has an actual time of (4:07). Will post this info in the proper "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You" thread as well...

Oh, and attn: crapfromthepast. From the http://www.top40musiconcd.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3029&KW=spanish+japanese - Wilson Phillips - "You're In Love" thread:

That being the case, while researching this song by Mr. Medeiros, I made an additional discovery, which you may want to track down (if you don't have it already). As a Hawaiian, he actually recorded a Japanese-language version of "NGCMLFY" as well! While it hasn't yet appeared on any U.S. CDs, it's included on the later Japanese versions of his 1987 s/t debut. What about the ultimate, hits that were US hits recorded in Spanish (though the English language translation appears on side B)

Mocedades-"Eres Tu", 1974.
(B side, "Touch The Wind")

Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 original version, 1966,
remake with Fergie and her Black Eyed Peas 200?
"Masque Ne Nada".

Then there's more to the point, the 1975 Morris Albert hit "Feelings" re-done as "Dime".

I also remember that Capt.and Tennille hit from the same year as mentioned, "Love will Keep us together"(Spanish title?)

Well, thanks to some additional research as well as patience, it seems I sorta got my wish. :-) In the last few months, I've discovered at least TWO additional V/A CD compilations devoted entirely to Spanish-language versions of hits! Both consist of a combination of recordings by the original artist that had the hit English-language version in the U.S., as well as covers by other acts. However, both are imports, so unlike Polydor 314 525 734-2 (described in detail above in my previous post), they're ineligible for inclusion in Pat's on-line db. I've recently acquired copies of both CDs, and thought I'd go ahead and post full details here, for others who may also be interested - especially since BOTH include some versions by the original artists that have NOT been previously mentioned in either this thread or the one for "Do That To Me One More Time"!

Interestingly, the first one is from Mexico, and also titled Stars in Spanish, but is NOT to be confused w/ the previously-discussed U.S. release of the same name on Polydor 314 525 734-2 (although they do actually share three of the same songs). It's on SGB Records CDID 7378, from 2007, and features 19 tracks. The back insert features the "HECHO EN MEXICO" ("MADE IN MEXICO") logo, but also states "Printed in USA" in the fine print, as well as on the CD itself; the label (SGB Records) has a Los Angeles address, and claims to be manufactured & distributed by UMVD. (And indeed, most of the recordings by the original acts on this CD are ones on labels that are currently under the Universal umbrella.) However, it appears this may very well be a "gray area" CD...

It features the following eight top 40 hits sung in Spanish by the ORIGINAL artists - and like before, I've chosen to list them chronologically, w/ the dates being the peak years as given in Pat's on-line db, and the timings being ACTUAL:

1969 RENE & RENE - "Lo Mucho Que Te Quiero" ("The More I Love You") (2:45) (okay, this one's actually in Spanglish, and WAS the hit version in the U.S.)
1978 KANSAS - "Polvo en el Viento" ("Dust in the Wind") (3:31)
1987 CHRIS DeBURGH - "La Dama de Ayer" ("The Lady in Red") (4:02) (artist's name spelled "Chris De Burge" on CD inserts)
1990 ROXETTE - "Puede Ser Amor" ("It Must Have Been Love") (3:53) (artist's name spelled "Rossette" on CD inserts)
1991 SCORPIONS - "Vientos de Cambio" ("Wind of Change") (5:06)
1991 BRYAN ADAMS - "Todo Lo Que Hago es Por Ti" ("[Everything I Do] I Do it for You") (4:05)
1993 BON JOVI - "Cama de Rosas" ("Bed of Roses") (5:03)
1995 BON JOVI - "Como Yo Nadie Te Ha Amado" ("This Ain't a Love Song") (4:57)

It also includes this song sung in Spanish by a U.S. hit-making act, although the English version was not a top 40 hit by this artist:

JOSE FELICIANO - "Te Esperare" ("Right Here Waiting") (4:21) (cover of 1989 hit by Richard Marx)

"Wind of Change", "(Everything I Do) I Do it for You", and "Bed of Roses" are the three that also appear on the U.S. CD of the same name from Polydor, and all w/ nearly identical timings. However, Spanish-language versions of both "The Lady in Red" by Chris DeBurgh and "This Ain't a Love Song" by Bon Jovi have NOT been mentioned here on Pat's chat board before, and I admit that I didn't know about either of those myself before picking up this CD! If you've never heard them before, here they are on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiVUZF8XVYs - CHRIS DeBURGH - "The Lady in Red" (Spanish-language version) (3:09) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAiy2NHOPW4 - BON JOVI - "This Ain't a Love Song" (Spanish-language version) (5:06) Although it was released on a vinyl 45 (w/ a picture sleeve) in Spain, I have yet to find any evidence that the Spanish-language version of the Chris DeBurgh song was issued here in the U.S. in any form. Page for the Spanish 45 on Discogs, complete w/ photos: https://www.discogs.com/Chris-De-Burgh-La-Dama-De-Ayer/release/7235194 - CHRIS DeBURGH - "La Dama de Ayer" (Spanish 45) The Bon Jovi song, on the other hand, was indeed issued as a two-track promo CD single in the U.S. on Mercury CDP 1462. Page on Discogs (although it erroneously states that it's from Spain), complete w/ photos: https://www.discogs.com/Bon-Jovi-Como-Yo-Nadie-Te-Ha-Amado/release/7411782 - BON JOVI - "Como Yo Nadie Te Ha Amado" (U.S. promo CD single)

Nine of the 10 remaining songs on the CD are covers of other huge U.S. hits from the '60s through '90s sung in Spanish by no-name acts, such as "Yesterday" (1965), "Love Hurts" (1976), "Total Eclipse of the Heart" (1983), and "I Will Always Love You" (1993), among others; the last is a Megamix of quite a few of the songs found on the disc. Stars in Spanish is evidently still in print, albeit pretty tough to find. Here's a recent listing on eBay, w/ photos: http://www.ebay.com/itm/322025761895?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT - V/A - "Stars in Spanish" (Mexican CD)

The other CD is from Spain, and titled Cantando en Espanol (Sung in Spanish). It's on EMI PE 0-2, from 1992, and features 18 tracks. (Most of the recordings are indeed by EMI/Capitol acts.) And yes, this one is most definitely legit (i.e., NOT a "gray area" CD)...

It features the following four top 40 hits sung in Spanish by the ORIGINAL artists - and again, this is a chronological listing, w/ the dates being the peak years as given in Pat's on-line db, and the timings being ACTUAL:

1959 RITCHIE VALENS - "La Bamba" (2:02) (okay, the hit in the U.S. WAS this all-Spanish version)
1969 OLIVER - "Jean" (3:15)
1980 KIM CARNES - "Mas Amor" ("More Love") (3:30)
1981 KOOL & THE GANG - "Celebremos" ("Celebration") (5:13)

It also includes these six songs sung in Spanish by various U.S. hit-making acts, although the English versions were not top 40 hits - or if they were, they were by other artists:

MATT MONRO - "Alguien Canto" ("The Music Played") (3:18)
BOBBIE GENTRY - "No Me Quiero en Amorar" ("I'll Never Fall in Love Again") (2:47) (cover of 1970 hit by Dionne Warwick)
EYDIE GORME - "Dime" ("Feelings") (3:43) (cover of 1975 hit by Morris Albert, who also recorded it in Spanish)
ASTRUD GILBERTO - "Solo el Fin" ("For All We Know") (3:14) (cover of 1971 hit by the Carpenters)
CONNIE FRANCIS - "Siboney" (2:51)
CHRIS MONTEZ - "No, No, No" (2:14)

The Spanish-language versions of both "Jean" by Oliver and "More Love" by Kim Carnes have yet to appear on a U.S. CD; in fact, the existence of the former has never even been mentioned previously here on Pat's chat board. So if you've never heard it before, I found a single posting of it on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhPhz8L4TzY - OLIVER - "Jean" (Spanish-language version) (3:18) It was issued on a vinyl 45 (w/ picture sleeve) in Spain, but I've yet to uncover any evidence that it was ever released here in the U.S., in any form. In fact, that same Spanish 45 actually featured "Buenos Dias Brillo de Estrellas" on the flip side - i.e., the Spanish-language version of his other big 1969 hit, "Good Morning Starshine". Again, on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D36rrhOTzEo - OLIVER - "Good Morning Starshine" (Spanish-language version) (3:47) Page for the Spanish 45 on Discogs, complete w/ photos: https://www.discogs.com/Oliver-Jean-Buenos-D%C3%ADas-Brillo-De-Estrellas/release/4769587 - OLIVER - "Jean"/"Buenos Dias Brillo de Estrellas" (Spanish 45)

The eight remaining songs on the CD are all by artists that I've admittedly never heard of, and do not recognize as covers. Cantando en Espanol is long out-of-print, and currently goes for at least $20-$30 used, if you can find it. Page on Discogs, w/ photos: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Cantando-En-Espa%C3%B1ol/release/4900210 - V/A - "Cantando en Espanol" (Spanish CD)

Once again, I've also updated the info in my list from 13 May 2014 above, to reflect the availability of "More Love" ("Mas Amor") on CD...

From the "Do That To Me One More Time" thread:

Okay, now done - since it turns out it's existed on an import CD since at least 1992 (24 years)! I've always been a huge fan of KC (saw her in concert back in the late '80s), and her hit cover of "More Love" is among my top two or three favorite songs of hers; it was fascinating to hear that Spanish-language version for the first time just a few weeks ago (never owned the vinyl 45, like you). But I did you even one better - er, make that TWO. :-) I was able to obtain second copies of BOTH import CDs that I just described above, and on Friday, I mailed you a package w/ those actual CDs, so look for it in your mailbox either tomorrow (Monday) or Tuesday. Hope you enjoy them. Cheers, EdisonLite!

WOW! Thanks so much, Gregg!!! That is super nice of you!! It was just a few years ago that I bought the Spanish-language version of Kim Carnes' "More Love" (also one of my favorites) on 45 - and I hadn't cleaned it up yet. So it's rather ironic to know it's been on CD for at least 24 years!! And a legit CD, no less! Well, thanks again Gregg! I really appreciate it :)

No one should consider "La Canción De Guerra" to be the Spanish-language version of "The War Song".   Both songs are sung in English. The only difference is one line: "Guerra,
guerra estúpida, aquí la gente es estúpida" replaces "War, war is stupid and people are stupid".   That's it. The "Ultimate Dance Mix" includes both lines, plus the Japanese-
language line: "Senso hant-ai, Senso hant-ai". There were also a French version ("La Chanson de Guerre") and a German version ("Der Kriegsgesang").

Another Spanish-language version to add:

Celine Dion - "Sola Otra Vez" (Spanish version of
"All By Myself", 1996)
: It was released in a promo
CD single in the U.S. (CDP 12644). Latin American CD and
cassette editions of the album Falling Into You
feature "Sola Otra Vez" as a bonus track after "Fly".
The first Celine Dion compilation released in the U.S.
to feature "Sola Otra Vez" was The Collectors's
Series: Volume One

Michael Jackson - "Todo Mi Amor Eres Tú" (Spanish

: It
was released in a promo cassette single (EPCS 69007).
Side A contains the Spanish-language version and the
English version on side B. The 2001 special edition of

These Days (1995) as the
14th track replacing "Bitter Wine",
one of the two exclusive bonus
tracks in European releases (the
other one is track 13, "All I Want

"Together" by Tierra. AFAIK, it was only released on a 12" single (Boardwalk 4WB-5707 with "Latin Disco (Dance Version)"
on the flip side. Interestingly, they end the song in English!

How faithful are the translations from English to
Spanish on these songs? For example, Sheena Easton's
"Almost Over You" in English became "Everything Reminds
Me Of You" in Spanish.

BTW, I have spanish versions of these on vinyl (or CDs from vinyl) - does anyone know if any came out on CD (from tape):

I was just looking on Discogs and there doesn't appear to be any CD listings of the single for The Jets' "Make It Real". I have a 3" CD Single from Japan with "Alla
Tu/Make It Real (Bilingual Version)" as the B-Side. I believe the Catalog No. is 10SW-39.

I did a search for "Alla Tu" (the full Spanish Version) as well, but didn't find any listings of it on CD.

By the way, I know the title of this thread is "Hits Recorded In Spanish", but I just wanted to mention a 2CD Import that I have called "Motown Around The World - The
Classic Singles". 18 Songs in Italian, 8 in German, 4 in French and 8 in Spanish. These appear to be all 60's songs, with the exception of the last two songs. Here's the
Tracklist for anyone interested:

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Motown-Around-The-World-The-Classic-Singles/release/2452472 - Motown Around The World - The Classic Singles

Released in 2010, so the sound is on the compressed side as you might imagine. But if you're OK with that, it's a cool collection to have and listen to.

Just wanted to add a few more hits to this list:

1991 Color Me Badd - "Yo Adoro Mi Amor" (Spanish Version Of "I Adore Mi Amor"). Only CD appearance that I know of is on a Promo CD Single from Giant Records (PRO-CD-5074). Also issued on a Commercial Cassette Single in the US.

1994 All-4-One - Muy Enamorados (Spanish Version of "So Much In Love").

1994 All-4-One - Jurare (Spanish Version of "I Swear"). According to Discogs, this was issued as a CD Single in Spain with the English Version as the B-Side.

1995 All-4-One - Yo Te Voy A Querer (Spanish Version of "I Can Love You Like That"). According to Discogs, this was issued in Germany on a Promo CD Single.

Also, although Discogs has no listing for it, the above three songs appear on a commercial CD Single in the US. (Atlantic/Blitz-87098).
It was also issued as a commercial Cassette Single.

The Color Me Badd promo seems to be extremely rare. I've been waiting for it to come up on Discogs and I have yet to see it available at all on eBay. I have the three track All-4-One CD Single, so I can confirm its existence, even if it's not on Discogs, lol.

<The other CD is from Spain, and titled Cantando en Espanol (Sung in Spanish). It's on EMI PE 0-2, from 1992, and features 18 tracks. (Most of the recordings are indeed by EMI/Capitol acts.) And yes, this one is most definitely legit (i.e., NOT a "gray area" CD). It features ...
1980 KIM CARNES - "Mas Amor" ("More Love") (3:30)>

I found that "CAntando en Espanol" CD and unfortunately, the spanish version of "More Love" sounds awful (bad vinyl transfers). Does anyone know if this has been released on CD from a tape source?

Does anyone know where Bryan Adams' "Todo Lo Que Hago Es Por Ti" (the spanish language version of 'Everything I Do ...') exists on CD or lossless? On Discogs, I could only find a vinyl LP release in Mexico with it. Someone from this group shared with me a flac that clearly used a tape source, but the flac comes from an mp3, as it tops out at 16k. It's clearly from tape though. So I'm guessing someone somewhere along the way made an mp3 of this, from CD. Hope someone knows or has the CD, as I'd like to upgrade to lossless.

So I'm guessing someone somewhere along the way made an mp3 of this, from CD. Hope someone knows or has the CD, as I'd like to upgrade to lossless.

Does anyone know where the Spanish version of Anne Murray's "Broken Hearted Me" appears on CD? I have a lossless (from tape) file from Ron, but I'm still curious where it caem from. You can hear it in full (from tape!) here:

https://secondhandsongs.com/performance/735997

(go to bottom of page).

It says the CD was released Nov 21 1995 and shows a pic that goes with the album cover of Anne's "New Kind of Feeling" album (which is not the parent album of the English version). But I don't know of any Anne Murray CD from 1995 that has the spanish version. I have all of her reissues that were released as 2-fers but I don't recall bonus cuts being on any of them.

I think the Spanish Version of "Broken Hearted Me" is on her "Now & Forever" box set. I seem to remember it coming out around 1994-95, so that
may be its only CD appearance. I always meant to get that box set, but never got around to it.

I was listening to the Spanish version of Nilsson's "Without You" and noticed that after the 2nd verse, he sangs the rest in English. Does anyone know if he released an all-Spanish version of the song? Though clearly not on the deluxe version of the Nilsson CD, it might be out there on vinyl somewhere.

Before it was released on digital, I had a bootleg
version of the Spanish language version ripped from (I
assume) whatever vinyl release it originated on and it
also switched back to English on the final chorus. I
think this was because Harry couldn't quite duplicate
that extended high note with the same effect in Spanish.

<7. Tal Vez Es Amor (I Think I'm In
Love With You) - Jessica Simpson>

I didn't know about this one. I'll be buying this. But do you know if it was on a CD single, or recorded just for this comp?

"Tal Vez Es Amor" (the Spanish-
language version of Jessica
Simpson's "I Think I'm In Love with
You") was recorded exclusively for
Divas en Español.

"Fragilidad", the Spanish-language
version of Sting's "Fragile", is
also available as a bonus track on
the Latin American cassette and CD
editions of the Sting compilation
Fields of Gold: The Best of
Sting 1984-1994
released in
1994.

Does anyone know if that CD Divas en Español was taken from master tape, particularly Jessica Simpson's Spanish version of "I Think I'm in Love with You"?

All the tracks on Divas En Español are taken
from master tapes.

Even though Tina Arena's song "Burn" failed to chart
on the Billboard Hot 100, the Spanish-language version
is also available on the Latin-American CD releases of
In Deep (the parent album for "Burn"), which
also contain a Spanish-language version of "Now I Can
Dance".

Deep/release/8555315 (Discogs entry for the Mexican CD
release of Tina Arena's album In Deep).

Lara Fabian's "Otro Amor Vendrá" (the Spanish-language
version of "I Will Love Again"), also appears on the
Special Edition release of Lara Fabian's self-titled
album in 2000.

Can someone confirm if Linda Ronstadt's "Lago Azul"
(spanish version of "Blue Bayou") was released on CD
anywhere in the world? I can't find any release on Discogs
containing it. Just vinyl records.
Thanks!

Donna Summer & Bruce Roberts -
https://www.discogs.com/release/17111823 - El
Verdadero
Amor ("Whenever There Is Love" spanish version)

Not sure if it qualifies as a "hit", since it only
reached #109 on the BB Hot 100 according to Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whenever_There_Is_Love

BTW, also recorded in
https://www.discogs.com/release/17111985 - french

Backstreet Boys - "Nunca Te Haré Llorar" (I'll Never
Break Your Heart)

This was included as a bonus track on the Latin
American/Spanish releases of Backstreet Boys (the
European 1996 release with the red cover) and the
compilaton The Hits: Chapter One. It's also
included in two US CD singles.

Ill-Never-Break-Your-Heart (this promo CD single also
contains a Spanglish version of the song).

Backstreet Boys - "Donde Quieras Yo Iré" (Anywhere for
You)

This was included as a bonus track on the Latin
American/Spanish releases of Backstreet Boys (the
European 1996 release with the red cover) and the
compilation The Hits: Chapter One. This was also
included in several UK CD singles. Even though "Anywhere
for You" failed to chart in the US, I decided to mention
its Spanish-language version here.

Just FYI, Linda Ronstadt's "Lago Azul" (spanish version
of
"Blue Bayou") was finally released as a bonus track of
the
digital (Deluxe) edition of "Canciones de mi padre":

linda-ronstadt/dreqq18zf0z7a

I'm not an expert, but it sounds like a transfer from
master tape, not vinyl (which was for decades the only
source for any of us).

In that promo compilation, track 10 is listed as the

"Todo Lo Que Hago Lo Hago Por Ti" (actual name of the

available on the 1995 V/A compilation Stars in
Spanish
(Polydor, 314 525 734-2), which was released

The track is also available on a Mexican V/A compilation
which is also titled Stars in Spanish (SGB
Records, CDID 7378), but is different from the one which
came out in 1995.
