strange thing on this one...I have an original LP on Jive JV 6600 (pressed by Quality Records of Canada) from 1982 that has the version running 3:57 on it. It's titled simply "I Ran", starts with a cymbal crash and ends cold. Perhaps another instance of a Canadian issue being different from the U.S. (it's happened before!).

Doesn't the US version have the same cymbal intro and cold end as
described above? I think I have the LP and maybe the 45. The best time I can
find is that it's 3:46.

my 45 lists the run time as 3:32 but actually runs 3:43 and is identical to the version from the cd "new wave hits of 80's volume 5"

As I mentioned, my LP version runs about 3:57, a bit longer than the single. Pat's database indicates the 5 minute version as being the LP version and the 3:57 as neither the 45 nor LP version.
I've no question on the 45 version.
Care to jump in, Pat?

Just so I'm getting the picture here, is this the version that essentially has the 45 version open and the LP version close?

Doug, I think that's exactly what we have here. The version on the Canadian LP ends cold like the LP version, so essentially it's the 45 version extended to the end instead of fading to the 3:43 mark.

Interesting. Back when I was growing up, that was the version WLS-AM/Chicago played. At the time I hadn't realized that the LP version was about a minute and change longer (on the front end)--so I always assumed that what WLS was playing was the LP version.
I wasn't collecting this music on a regular basis then. Never too late to make up for lost time. :)

My American LP has the 'cymbal-crash-3:57' version, but the CD of
that album has the 'synth-fade-in-5:08' version. So I would say that
the 3:57 version is the true LP version. My question is, where did
the 5:08 version come from? Is that the 12" version?

"I Ran"
Arista VJ12011
Available formats: 12" Single (Promo)
Track List -
I Ran (Extended) - 5:05
Space Age Love Song (Live) - 3:44
I don't have the record to verify but this info comes from a fan site.

My understanding was always that the 5:05 version with the trippy fade in made its debut on the CD (which angered many who had the original US album with the near 4 minute version). But if you look on discogs, all the original album releases in 1982 from different countries have different versions of the song. Some have the US LP version (near 4 minutes) and others have the 5 minute version. So that version seems to have been around from the start, just wasn't on the US release of the vinyl LP.

Bumping this up for folks who may be confused by the multitude of pressings for the first AFOS album from 1982, featuring "I Ran". Just gave a detailed outline of all the U.S. versions in cftp's new thread on this song...
