Pat--
I noticed on your Latest Modifications listing that you no longer
show a distinction between the 45 and LP versions of this song. I'm
just checking; does that mean they're one and the same, and I can
cross another one off my list?

paul....the cassingle version and the cd/lp version are identical and each runs 8:55....so yes, you can cross this one off the list.....

Although there was a radio edit, was there not?

(Some completists might desire a promo in addition to whatever was commercially available.)

Sure. Pass it along. The only thing comaprable that I've seen is TM Century's edit (just looking at their web site, it runs (4:33)). Then again if the times listed on their site are about 10 seconds short, then perhaps the two are simliar if not alike.

I just saw a Hitmakers promo CD from 1992, which contained 6 different radio station edits of the song. I don't think there was ever an official radio edit.
It is avaiable for purchase at eil.com for 170 dollars or so. Too pricey for me, but they do have a scan of the backcover with the track list that I took a look at.

I believe the TM Century edit is from that Hitmakers promo CD. It's the 4:45 version that Ed is talking about. They always list the AIR times and not the full run times. (4:33) is the spot where the DJ should be starting the next song.

Thanks for forwarding it. Kind of a disappointing radio edit, in my view--the ending shouldn't have faded (I would have extended it so that it ends with that note just before Axl Rose's pounding bass piano solo--maybe adding another 15-20 seconds, tops).

Yeah I remember the deal on November Rain. The band refused to let the label edit it. But the label encouraged radio stations to make their own and allowed Hitmakers to issue that disc with several edits. So as far as I'm aware, there was no legitimate edited version issued by the label or the band.

Since I was deep into my 1992 promo CD singles box tonight, I thought I'd provide full details of my copy of that Hitmakers "Exclusive" Special CD, dated June 19, 1992, including the "November Rain" edits:

1-Century Edit (listed 4:45; actual 4:44)
2-Michael Martin KIIS Edit (listed 3:57; actual 3:56)
3-J. Garrison Edit WJFK (listed 5:36; actual 5:34)
4-Top Gun Edit WFDU (listed 6:33; actual 6:32)
5-Ah-So Edit KOHT (listed 6:59; actual 6:58)
6-Full-LP Version (listed 8:56; actual 8:55)

We played the shortest one of the bunch, cut 2, when it was a current, and no angry listeners called us to complain about it, for what it's worth. This special Hitmakers disc was unlike ANY other disc I'd ever seen, either before or since. Think about it. It gave Geffen both deniability and a "degree of separation" here. They promised to GNR that they would not edit the song, and they didn't. But they claimed they couldn't control radio stations from doing their own "custom edits", could they? But back then, many of us believed that Geffen was FAR more involved in the creation of that Hitmakers disc than they ever admitted to. And it certainly was a "win-win" for Hitmakers as well, who got both their magazine and promo discs some extra "buzz" at radio for their "participation". FYI, the disc was pressed by Disctronics, and the "CD deadwax" info for it is "117165-D2-2161-2".

Would anyone who owns the Hitmakers Edits CD be willing to send me copies of the edits? If so, please PM me.

Thanks!

Since there are a few vinyl purists out there ;), I thought I would post this...My 45RPM single of 'November Rain' on Geffen 19067 states the time as 8:53, but actually clocks in at 8:50.5! It matches the CD perfectly until 8:46 when the rain drops fade a few seconds faster than the CD. This wouldn't be enough for me to say anything, but it leads to this question. Is 'November Rain' the longest 45 RPM single in the Top 40?? Or even the Hot 100?? -Bill.

Bill, I think you're probably right about the longest A-side top 40 / Hot 100 hit on a vinyl 45. It has to be "November Rain." The only other one that comes to mind at the moment is a Steppenwolf B-side called "For Madmen Only," which was the flip side of "Ride With Me" (a Hot 100 hit, but didn't make the top 40). "For Madmen Only" is 8:45 (actual length), and it's a stretch calling it a "song." More like avant garde noise.

If we're including B-sides, the longest may belong to Bruce Springsteen. The "Fire" 45 is backed with a live recording of "Incident on 57th Street" that is listed as 10:03! This recording has lots of quiet passages and narrow grooves. Unfortunately, the grooves on my copy are so narrow that it won't track properly, so I don't have an actual time.

I went back into my archives and pulled a copy of "Fire/Incident on 57th street", and slapped on my Shure V-15 type 5, and determined that "Incident" is precisely 10:03!! Good thing it wasn't an 'A' side, customers would have been coming back and saying, 'It won't PLAY'!! -Bill.

Hello everyone. I'm Patrick (new guy). Just
finished recreating the WJFK edit. Epic and
exhausting. 😳

Welcome Patrick! I try not to get involved in making my own edits. It's like golf, it can
get frustrating. Besides, I'm too involved with my own restorations! -Bill.

Welcome. Normally I would say get the promo CD, but in this case the promo CD is mighty expensive...

Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

Exactly. And I can't find a way to hear the "Estranged"
edits. Have no problem recreating.

BTW...I'm editing these monstrosities (LOL) because when
I get 5 minutes into a song while driving I'm ready to
skip ahead. And I enjoy hearing music the way I remember
it on the radio, especially 80's and 90's pop/rock.

There's so much info in this message board. I'm very
thankful and happy to be a part of it!

It kind of reminds me of what we did in my record store, on cassette. We would take say, March/April of 1969 and
record oldies from those 2 months but only put on a verse and a chorus, and then mix it to the next oldie. The customer
would then say, "Wait, what was that song that was on 2 songs ago!" It was a great way to promote sales. -Bill.

I may have finally discovered an official 5:00 edit, albeit released only by
Geffen Mexico on a promo 45. Has anyone heard this? It’s listed as part of
a GNR lot on eBay but at $700 it’s too rich for my blood. There’s also a
listing on Discogs: Geffen RX-1111.
