"Come Sail Away" - used so earnestly in the pilot of Freaks And Geeks, and used so absurdly in South Park.

For the LP version, I like the sound on A&M's Styx CD Greatest Hits (1995), which has a reasonable dynamic range, nice EQ, has a very long tail to the fade, and doesn't show any evidence of noise reduction on the fade. It runs 6:03 here.

For some reason, A&M's Classics Vol. 15 (1987) fades the LP version early by about 34 seconds. Blasphemy! This length never existed on record. Avoid.

For the 45 version, there's a version on Priority's Seventies Greatest Rock Hits Vol. 12 #1 Groups (1992) that runs 3:10. I don't have the actual 45, so I can't compare lengths. I assume that the edits on the Priority disc match the true 45, but can't confirm; I doubt anyone at Priority would have gone to the trouble to reproduce them from the LP version. Unfortunately, I don't like the sound on the Priority disc - I suspect that the left and right channels are out of synch by a sample or two, because some of the high end disappears when you sum to mono, and an OOPS (out-of-phase-sum) test shows some odd high-frequency artifacts.

I reverse-engineered the edits on the Priority disc (assuming that they match the 45), using the LP version on Greatest Hits as a source. This one didn't work out so easily counting beats, so you'll have to go by the timings. Now you, too, can violate all that is sacred in the world of Classic Rock and edit down the LP version to match the 45, according to the following instructions:

Segment 1
Extends from 0:00.0 to 1:07.9 of both the LP version and the 45 edit

Remove 1:07.9 to 2:20.5 of the LP version.

Segment 2
Extends from 2:20.5 to 3:12.3 of the LP version
Extends from 1:07.9 to 1:59.7 of the 45 edit

Don't remove anything, but repeat a portion of the last segment.

Segment 3
Extends from 3:05.8 to 3:12.1 of the LP version
Extends from 1:59.7 to 2:06.1 of the 45 edit

Remove 3:12.1 to 4:40.8 of the LP version.

Segment 4
Extends from 4:40.8 to 5:45.7 of the LP version
Extends from 2:06.1 to 3:11.0 of the 45 edit

Fade
48 beats long (using the double-time tempo of the second half of the song)
Starts where the LP fade starts but shortens the tail
Extends from 5:26.4 to 5:45.7 of the LP version
Extends from 2:51.7 to 3:11.0 of the 45 edit

Your mixdown will run 3:11.0, with edits at 1:07.9, 1:59.7, and 2:06.1.
