OK, another one for the class, since this didn't even make the Hot 100 in 1987-88. But anyone know if the US 45 version (which according to Discogs was a longer edit

Doug, when it comes to what I call my "total stiffs section" (non-
chart/non-bubblers), luck was not on your side with "Unchain My Heart". I did find two other 1987 Capitol NC 45s by Cocker (including 4 promo copies of one of them; since re-filed), but that's no help to you. My British chart book does show "Unchain..." as his first solo charter (#46, 4 wks on) in his homeland since "The Letter" in 1970 - maybe they should've issued the shorter UK 45 edit here? :) Hopefully someone else here can bail you out, but if not, like you've noted in your post, all U.S. 45s and the promo 12" state a runtime of (4:11), and are luckily available on Discogs for just a buck or two + S&H. This might just be one of those times when you'll have to go that route, assuming you have a working TT. I'm afraid it might be your only option here. Good luck, my friend! |

4:11 on both sides, but plays 5:02 on both sides. |

I assume we're talking about the version that peaked at UK#17 in July 1992?
I have this song on 3 compilation CDs. EMI UK's 2-CD Now 22 (1992), Disky's European 8-CD Greatest Hits Of The '90s (2004), and the US jukebox-only promo collection Spotlight On Hits Pop Vol. 23 (1994) all include the same 5:02 version. I assumed Doug was discussing the 1987 45, Capitol 44072,
which does have a listed time of 4:11, as said. There was a "90s version" as well from a 1992 greatest hits cd. |

My stereo equipment is not as sophisticated as the other
folks' on this forum so I generally don't post, but as my commercial copy of this record is indeed an edit of the LP version I wanted to reply. As I hear it, there seems to be two edits to make my old 1987 Capitol 45 time out for me at 4:09 (my turntable may be fast since the record states 4:11) while the version I have on The Long Voyage Home boxset times out for me at 5:18 - otherwise the song is identical. There seems to be a verse excised from about 3:15 - 3:32 and then the long ending vamp is sliced about 3:58 - 4:50 when the single and CD both say "Oh..." then slow down to finish. Hopefully someone with better gear can confirm my timing. |

Those timings can't be right. The first one makes for a very awkward edit, and the "Oh..."'s don't match in the second edit.

Kudos to Gary, who sent a copy. There's actually a third edit (the piano before the bass line is snipped).
Rockdent was correct about where the second edit (the 3:15-3:32 one) was, but I'm not sure it can be extracted cleanly from the LP (if feels like there's either an extra piano note or overdub that obscures Cocker's singing of "un" at (3:15)). Having trouble pinpointing the third edit--I know it's there but I'm not sophisticated enough either. So, indeed it's an edit, but in my view not an easy edit to make. Based on several postings, it looks to me like the 4:11 edit was used on the music video at the time. That doesn't solve the problem of finding the edit on CD, but perhaps could provide a guide for editing the LP version.
The UK was allegedly even shorter, listed on Discogs as only running 3:24. I have no vinyl to confirm it actually ran this, though. At the time of posting, a good sounding copy of the video was located on YouTube https://youtu.be/Lggqh-Ew8n4?si=tdGpIYEKC78K_380 - here . I'm now on the hunt for this edit on CD, or someone's recreation. Searching the web, I found on Steve Hoffman's forum that
user CBpat mentions the differences between the LP version released in 1987 and the 1990 version. Apparently, two years after the original 1987 release, an additional guitar (Phil Grande) was added to the single for inclusion on the second European edition of Night Calls, as well as the album The Best of Joe Cocker (1992). - Unchain My Heart - Absolutely great take of Joe’s 1987 hit cover of the famous Ray Charles song. This version features much more guitar, with strong lead and rhythm parts from Grande and Mack. The backup vocalists are excellent here, Levine recreates his piano intro perfectly from the original— everything from the bass guitar riff to the horn chats are perfectly in place here, including an excellent sax solo (either by Deric Dyer or Andrew Love). This is a very high energy performance, and Joe responds in kind with a very strong lead vocal. This outdoes the studio take for me. The extra guitars here (and I assume in all live performances during this period) were probably the inspiration to take the 1987 recording of this two years later and add extra guitar to it for inclusion on the second European edition of Night Calls, as well as on the The Best of Joe Cocker album (1992). Another of the best tracks on this album, easily. - Unchain My Heart (90’s version) - There is not much to say here— this is the already released version of Unchain My Heart which had appeared on the album of the same name and as a single in 1987, only here we get overdubbed guitar from Phil Grande. Grande’s playing is, true to form, excellent, and for the most part the lines don’t show— anyone used to the original recording may disagree however. Actually, to be honest, there are moments when I find the guitar audibly interferes a bit with Joe’s vocal. Ultimately therefore, I still prefer the sparer original version of this. Out of all the TM Century HitDiscs I have, there is one I do not have. #706 is among the earliest of them and there is a 4:07 version listed as track #1. It's my guess that this might be within the range of the music video version.
