I just picked up the bootleg "The Ultimate 7" & 12" Collection Part IV"
by U2 and it contains the "7" Edit" of "New Year's Day" running 3:53
(which is listed as the radio edit on Wikipedia). All of my versions
from compilations run 4:18. The LP version on "War" runs 5:18. What
is this 4:18 version and where did it originally appear? I would like to
find a clean digital copy of the 7" Edit since this bootleg is from a
scratchy vinyl.

My copy of New Year's Day is from the bonus tracks
version of "War", is listed as the single edit
and runs 3:55. It should be on iTunes.

Any info on the differences between the 4:18 and 3:55 versions?
Thanks for the info.

I don't own the 4:18 version so I can't speculate. But,
the 3:55 version is easily available.

The 3:55 edit is the US 7" release and is now available as a bonus track on the deluxe reissue of the War CD.
The 4:18 edit was the video version of the song, initially included on the Japanese 7" release and later included on both the Best Of 1980-1990 and 18 Singles compilations.

When compared to the 4:18 edit, the US 45 has two additional edits and an early fade. Both of the edits are during the guitar solo.
