I am surprised no one has started a thread on the song "Sock It To Me Baby" by Mitch Ryder so I will start one myself. There are indeed multiple versions of this 45 floating around with most having a matrix number of 7022. There was some question when this song was first released as to whether Mitch was singing the line "hits me like a punch" as possibly "hits me like a puck" or even "hits me like a "f**k" so New Voice records did issue a revised version with matrix number 7022 R where Mitch clearly sings "punch" and I do have a copy of this version which is a dj copy. Now my first question is, was there ever a commercial 45 with this revised 7022 R version released? Other sources like the Goldmine 45 rpm price guide claim there was also a version released which changed this line to "feels like a punch" which I have never come across so does anyone have a commercial pressing of this 45 with the revised "feels like a punch" lyric?
Oddly enough, the mono and stereo LP titled "Sock It To Me Baby" are different takes with the mono LP featuring the commercial 45 version but neither contain the revised lyric mentioned above. |

My commercial 45 is the same as your promo. I have a promo
of it somewhere, but it seems to be misfiled. I don't ever recall hearing the alternate version until some time in the late 80s/early 90s. Could it have been recorded (and perhaps intended for release) but never actually issued? |

All three of my New Voice 820 stock 45 copies have deadwax info of "7022".
All have listed times of (2:46), but an actual time of (2:58). My New Voice 820 promo 45 copy has deadwax info of "7022R". Listed time is (2:46), but the actual time is (3:00). |

My stock copy is also the standard "7022" (it's a vinyl ARP pressing, although the usual script ARP deadwax logo isn't present.)
As to what the contested words might be, on my copy, it's pretty clear he's singing "honeybuck and "hits me like a puck." A Red Wings hockey reference, perhaps? ;) Both times it appears, there's a major-league "P" pop in the mic on "puck" and a very deliberate "k" sound on both "honeybuck" and "puck." |

Pat sent me mp3's of both pressings of the 45 and I was
able to synchronize them so the difference was more obvious. I also sync'd the LP version to the 45. As for the lyric, I always assumed the words were "honeybunch" and "hit me like a punch" but I do concede he yells his "ch" sound much like a "K" sound. But "punch" makes more sense to me. Now, on the revised edited 45, all they did was take his word "punch" and make the vocal a few DB louder and turned it way up on the "ch" sound to make that clearer. They also dip the volume of the backing music down low just for a 1/2 second to make the word really stand out. They then took the one-word segment and spliced it back into the standard 45. The splice points are little off so it stretches the time between those 2 beats, throwing the sync off. But once I fix that time shift, it reveals it's the same word from the same take, just louder. I too am curious to know if this "revised" edit made it onto any commercial 45's. Now, for the stereo LP version, the only part of the song that is an alternate take is the first verse. That is quite obviously a different take. They cut in the different take starting at :20 on the word "honey" and it switches to the stereo LP take at :33 on the word "sock". The mix, however, is very different throughout. The whistle sound effects are not the same ones on the LP, there are lots of reverb effects on the stereo that are not on the 45 mix and of course the stereo LP version runs longer at the end. So it's very good the hit mono mix has turned up on several CD's. MM |
