I own two 1962 Vee Jay 465 stock 45 copies for this. The first is a vinyl
copy. And except for the fact that there is no "from VJLP 1053 'Sherry'"
statement noted, either in the label's upper left corner or below the artist
name (as the Discogs 45 scan copy does), my copy's deadwax exactly
matches the first Discogs US 45 listing: "VJ-62-26-49-1E", with a small
"11" just after the E, and a stray double quote at the end. This copy has
both a listed & actual runtime of (2:25), features a slightly longer fade
than my other copy does, and appears to be an American Record Pressing
Co. pressing.

My other stock 45 copy appears to match up with the 4th Discogs
sequential US 45 listing. A styrene Columbia pressing from Bridgeport, in
my home state of CT. It has the same listed (2:25), actual (2:21) timings
that Pat currently displays in the db for the song. Deadwax is a machine-
stamped "ZTSC-87556-1K".

With increased focus of late about the mono 45 and mono LP versions of
some of their early releases perhaps being different popping up of late
over on BSN (due to new CD releases of these mono LP tracks), my
findings here may not help clarify much on that issue, but we've long
been interested in original stock 45s appearing with multiple confirmed
timings; hence this post.

Pat asked me to assist with a question about "Big Girls Don't Cry," so I have pulled the stock copies Jim posted about above. I also have a dub of the Vee Jay promo 45 provided by another chat board member. Here's his description of the promo 45:

ARP logo VJ 62-62-26-49-1A BellSound {something I can't read apparently Audio Matrix)
Vee Jay Disc Jockey Advance Sample VJ 465

[Note: I think the promo 45 only has one "62" in the matrix, which is how Discogs has it listed and is what matches the label matrix.]

The audio of Jim's vinyl stock copy with matrix VJ-62-26-49-1E matches the dub I have of the promo 45.

The styrene 45 copy that Jim posted about (matrix ZTSC 87556) runs about 1% slower than the promo and vinyl stock copies (matrix 62-2649), and it also fades earlier. This is a slightly different mix with different reverb and less compression. Could this be a mono LP mix? I don't have the mono LPs to know for sure. (One thing I can say for sure is that it's not a fold-down of the stereo mix.)

Next, I compared these two mixes to the mono version that appears on the Jersey Beat box set. Jersey beat has yet a THIRD dedicated mono mix that doesn't exactly match the two 45 copies I have, but again, I don't know if it matches either of the two mono LPs. (I can say for sure that the Jersey Beat mix is also not a fold-down of the stereo mix.)

So, to conclude, there are at least three different mono mixes of "Big Girls Don't Cry." Until I'm able to get dubs of the mono LPs, I can't say for sure if either of the stock 45s I have match up with one of the mixes on the LPs.

Thanks to the assistance of two different Johns (you know who you are), I was able to hear the mono LP versions on Sherry & 11 Others and Golden Hits Of The 4 Seasons, so I have new news to report.

45 mix 1 (matrix 62-2649) appears on Sherry & 11 Others

45 mix 2 (matrix ZTSC 87556) appears on Golden Hits Of The 4 Seasons

The mono mix on the CD box set Jersey Beat still does not match up with either. There is, however, a 1963 mono LP titled Big Girls Don't Cry And 12 Others... that I haven't checked. If anyone has this LP and can send a dub, that will probably be the last source I would need to compare to draw final conclusions. :)
