Amazingly, I've only discovered this song recently after a
friend introduced me to it. I don't think any Missing
Persons songs were successful here in NZ. I don't
remember hearing any of them on the radio and none of them
charted here.

Just curious - can the 3:40 DJ edit of 'Words' be created
easily using the 4:25 version? I'd like to give it a shot
if anyone can provide instructions. Otherwise I will have
to purchase one of the numerous CDs that features the DJ
edit.

The promo 45 version is easier than I expected.

First, delete the fade-in, so that the song starts on the first beat.

Then, it's an early fade - no other edits.

After you delete the fade-in, the fade starts on a downbeat, on the word "words" at 3:15.

The tail of the fade is absurdly long. End the fade at 3:40 (after you delete the fade-in), and you'll have the promo 45 version.

So happy to see a thread on this song. I remember the original MTV video
(the one with Dale Bozzio heavily made up, in a barely-there, two-
strategically-placed-black-half-moons plastic top and a square,
computer-gizmo bottom, and five colors of hair (quite common now, but
the overall look very much stood out back in late '81.)) "Words" was their
first 45, and I was first introduced to the song via the video, which didn't
fade, but ended, with a brief drum flourish. I loved it. Maybe it's just
because that's the way I first heard it, but I've always thought that the
video's ending fit the song best, by a mile.

Yet every "Words" 45, LP and/or 12" version that I have ever happened
upon, since back when it was a current, fades the song out. To this day, I
still feel a major letdown, not ever hearing the non-faded ending from the
video. Best as I can tell, the video uses the exact same take - it just goes
on for a bit longer.

I have their GH CD, and I also liked "Destination Unknown" a lot, but I'm
far from an expert on the band Missing Persons. Perhaps someone else on
here is, though, and might know of a domestic or import CD or vinyl
source that features the full length, video version. Thanks as always, for
any possible help!

Well, that was exceptionally easy! Thanks very much, Ron.

I just pulled up the video on YouTube, and the opening title screen says
"live 1981." While it's not a live concert video, the band appears to be
playing the song live while the video is being shot, so it's not lip synced.
Therefore this version really is a completely different recording to
what's on the album and single.

Isn't the promo 45 version of "Words" not just simply a
fade out (after the intro is cut off)? Once cutting off
the intro, at 3:27, electric guitar comes back in and
then the "do you hear me, do you care" lyrics. This is
not heard in the promo 45 version (as it fades out at
that point in time) if it were just to fade out. Sounds
like the chorus has been spliced in an extra time
somewhere around 3:15 in order to keep the chorus
repeating as the song fades out.

bumping this thread up again. Bellenger1981 pointed out
there might be an extra chorus edited in before the
long fade out. Anyone able to confirm?

That's correct. The promo 45 has a looped chorus at the end. It can be created using the LP version, and the edit/loop occurs about half way through the fade out. If you remove the intro of the LP version, the segment from 3:12 to 3:27 is looped once (edit just before the word "all"). After creating the loop, fade from about 3:16 to 3:40, removing any audio beyond 3:40.
