Interesting collection. Nice that someone is making the
radio edits available.

I wonder if "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" is a disc dub or
if they were able to find the master tape. That UK company
that reissued all the S.O.S. Band remasters a couple years
ago couldn't find a tape source.

It would indeed be great if someone took their time (and did it right).

You'll be pleased to know, we did it right.
It was pretty apparent the Tabu owners did not have this
tape. So it made sense the master tape never moved from
where it was stored in the early 80's. At the time Tabu
was distributed by CBS. We had Universal contact Sony and
provided them the matrix# of the 45. The tape was there,
untouched since 1980. Sony kindly dubbed the tape. It was
in pristine condition (I assume it had to be baked).
Sometimes all you have to do is ask.
There ya have it.

I'm a little confused by the (1988 version) of "Red Red Wine." I always assumed the 3:01 edit (an early fade of the version on the parent LP Labour of Love, I believe) was released in 1983 on 45, but in 1988 they issued the (original 1983) LP version on 45 (which runs 5:21 or thereabouts). Was the '88 release a remix? Or is this just to imply it's the full 5:21 version?

It's the latter. They are wanting to clarify that it's the version that was the hit in 1988, which is indeed the 1983 full LP version.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks. I figured this was the case. I have this song on an A&M Memories/Collectables 45 and so wasn't 100% positive about the '88 stock 45 version, but I do recall that they played the LP/45 version in my radio market back in the fall of 1988.

Yup, exactly what Aaron said. We just wanted to clarify it was the '88 45 version not the '83 45 version.
BTW, huge props and thanks to Jim Abbott and Aaron Kannowski for their help and consultation putting these 2 CD's together. You will see them prominently in the credits!

Comparing the short 1983 version to the LP, the "rap" that starts at
about 2:30 is removed. Instead, the short version goes to the
instrumental segment (found at about 1:33 and again at 4:00 of the LP).
I don't know if they did an overlap of those two segments or if they went
back to the multitracks, but it's not a straight edit.

You're right, of course. My bad. Sorry to muddy the waters. Too much red red wine, evidently.

Mark was kind enough to send me an advance copy of this CD and I'm happy to say that the sound is uniformly excellent!
So nice to finally have the correct single version of "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" and the radio edit of "Into The Night" on an official CD. A nice selection of 20 songs (78 minutes) makes this a real bargain to boot.
Kudos to Bill, Mark, Walt and everybody else involved in this outstanding release (including our own Aaron, Ed and Jim).

Of course Tabu didn't have the tape. They lost the
Sussex masters too (same owner).

I received my copies of Vol. 15 and 16 this week. If you haven't already ordered these, I highly recommend that you do. Great selection of tracks, plenty of hard (if not impossible) to find tracks, and superb audio quality across the board. Thumbs up to Mark and everyone else involved in producing these discs.
One thing I did notice, regarding Baltimora's "Tarzan Boy" which appears on Vol 15. Until now, the only CD I owned which featured this song was O.S.T. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. The version on Hard To Find 45s On CD Vol 15 was noticeably slower to my ears, and upon further investigation I concluded that it runs 1.55% slower than the version on O.S.T. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. They both run the same length so the slower of the two is obviously faded earlier.
I'm assuming the version on Hard To Find 45s On CD Vol 15 runs the correct speed and length. So, is the O.S.T. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III version sped up for some reason? And does this warrant a note in the database?

I remember this speed issue from many years ago.
The version on Sony Germany's 2-CD Pop And Wave Vol. 6 (1996) runs at 107.5 BPM. The version on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III soundtrack runs at 109.4 BPM. Same version, but different speeds, with a pretty big discrepancy. (I also have four EMI compilations from the UK and Australia with a completely different edit of the song, running about 3:25, and 108.8 BPM. Not sure what version was actually on the UK or Australian 45s.)
I'm about 80% sure that I checked the speed of the US 45, and I think it matched the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III soundtrack. The remaining 20% is because I don't have any written notes saying that I really checked it.
Can anyone else confirm, since my 80%-based-only-on-memory isn't really good enough here?

Thanks to Aaron, I can confirm that the US 45 starts at 109.3 BPM and ends at 109.1 BPM, with a tiny continuous drift in tempo from start to finish.
That matches the Turtles soundtrack version.

I should also note that the version on Hard To Find 45s On CD Vol. 15 starts at 107.8 BPM and ends at 107.6 BPM, which is about 1.4% too slow.

Ron, you probably noticed already, but my 45 copy is pressed very slightly off-center. (I didn't correct it when I dubbed it.)

Funny, my stock copy from 1985 had the same problem!
For that reason, I was overjoyed to get this one on CD in 1993, on the Turtles III soundtrack.

Thought I'd turn a critical ear on Eric's Hard To Find 45s On CD Vol. 15 80s Essentials And Beyond (2016).- RED RED WINE - UB40 (1988) - probably a digital clone of Labour Of Love; this is a differently-EQ'd and dynamically expanded (less compression) digital clone of Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 24 Everything '80s (2002)
- IT MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE - Roxette (1990) - differently-EQ'd digital clone of Virgin EMI PolyGram UK's 2-CD Now 18 (1990), with intro trimmed, and faded early
- I'M GONNA BE (500 MILES) - Proclaimers (1993) - sound on par with other CDs with the song
- TAKE YOUR TIME (DO IT RIGHT) - S.O.S. Band (1980) - The real 45 version, for the first time anywhere! Sounds great, too.
- STEPPIN' OUT - Joe Jackson (1982) - differently-EQ'd digital clone of Rhino's Like Omigod (2002)
- THEY DON'T KNOW - Tracey Ullman (1984) - sound on par with other CDs with the song
- TARZAN BOY - Baltimora (1985) - runs 1.6% slower and a little shorter than Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III soundtrack, which matches the 45 exactly
- WE DON'T TALK ANYMORE - Cliff Richard (1979) - first appearance of the 45 edit, sound on par with Razor & Tie Cliff Richard collection
- MOONLIGHT SHADOW - Mike Oldfield (1983) - sounds fine (I don't really know the song)
- NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY LOVE FOR YOU - Glenn Medeiros (1987) - runs a second or two shorter than the version on Sony's compilation Feel The Love
- ONE MORE TRY - Timmy T. (1990) - differently-EQ'd digital clone of LP version on Quality's Time After Time (1991), same as "Radio version" on promo CD single
- JOEY - Concrete Blonde (1990) - sound on par with other CDs with the song
- NIGHTSHIFT - Commodores (1985) - differently-EQ'd digital clone of Hitsville U.S.A. Vol. 2 (1993) but somehow doesn't clip and fades a few seconds earlier
- PASS THE DUTCHIE - Musical Youth (1982) - differently-EQ'd digital clone of Priority's Rock Of The '80s Vol. 9 (1993)
- SATURDAY LOVE - Alexander O'Neal Featuring Cherrelle (1986) - sounds very nice
- WOULD I LIE TO YOU - Charles And Eddie (1992) - differently-EQ'd digital clone of "Radio Edit LP Version" on promo CD single
- AFTER ALL - Cher And Peter Cetera (1989) - seems to be new analog transfer; not based on Hitmakers
- INTO THE NIGHT - Benny Mardones (1980) - promo 45 version
- RIGHT HERE WAITING - Richard Marx (1989) - differently-EQ'd digital clone of Greatest Hits (1997)
- I'D DO ANYTHING FOR LOVE (BUT I WON'T DO THAT) - Meat Loaf (1993) - differently-EQ'd digital clone of Hot Hits Pop Vol. 23 (1993) and, probably, promo CD single
Overall, the sound on this CD is flawless. Great dynamic range, nice EQ, no noise reduction anywhere, and no truncations on the fades. I couldn't have done it any better myself.
The true 45 version of "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" alone is worth the price of the CD.
Really, quite an outstanding job, and big kudos to Mark, Aaron, Ed, Jim, and everyone else involved with the project.
