hope it's the same good news: What about "One Night in Bangkok"? Was the US single tape for that found as well? |

Thanks again to Mark for sending me an advance copy.
This volume is also an excellent release. Sound quality is terrific! So nice to have the quality CD versions of "One Night In Bangkok", "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go", "I Melt With You", "Live Is Life" and "Send Me An Angel '89" all in one collection. Kudos to everyone involved. Here's hoping we get more of these outstanding 80s and 90s collections! |

For "One Night In Bangkok," weren't there two versions of the 45--an edit of the LP version with the orchestra tuning up, and another version featuring the
music bed underneath Head's "Get Thaied, you're talking to a witness..." verse, followed by the chorus, then by Head's "Bangkok, Oriental city..."? ETA: So if I'm reading the database correctly, the tuning up was the US promo version running (3:52), while I'm guessing the stock 45 was the other version I described. Yes, that's correct. The version with the orchestra at the beginning was

Yeah, the stock 45 version has the unique intro, which instrumentally sounds similar to the rest of the song -- and includes the chorus right before the first verse. That's what they used for this CD. (It sounds great, by the way.) I've been looking for a good-sounding 45 version for a long time, as my needle drop was sub par.
I can't speak to the radio promo, but the LP version found on the Chess soundtrack has a somewhat lengthy orchestral intro. The intro ends with a flourish right into the first verse. I must say, I don't recall my radio market playing anything other than the commercial 45 version back in the spring of '85. EDIT: Heh...Aaron beat me to it, and more concisely too. It's really such a pity to be looking at the board, not looking at the city. |

Since Vol. 15 went so well, I thought I'd turn a critical ear on Eric's Hard To Find 45s On CD Vol. 16 More '80s Essentials And Beyond (2016).
"Dancing With Myself" sounds so much better than Like Omigod that it's hard to put into words. Likewise for "One Night In Bangkok". All the other versions on CD felt like they had the life squeezed out of them. Thanks to this CD, I can confirm that the song has a hi-hat in it! Great to finally have an official version of the Soft Cell medley on CD. You can edit it down from the 12" version, but it didn't sound as good as what's here. The Modern English 45 version in STEREO!?! Amazing! And previously unreleased, anywhere. "Pump Up The Volume" sounds significantly better than the 1987 CD single, which was kinda lifeless in comparison. And "Live Is Life" really is difficult to track down on CD. I have it on some foreign compilations, but the applause lengths are all different. Some foreign compilations even have a live re-recording of the song. Aaron is correct. I prefer the 45 version. Though if you want a nice orchestral ramp up in anticipation, this would be your go to version! The version of "Bad Boys" by Inner Circle here is the 1990 LP version which was the international hit single in 1990–1993, depending on where you were (1993 for US). This version was on the 1990 album Black Roses and the 1993 album Bad Boys, among others listed in the database already.
The superior version (IMHO) which was actually used on the "Cops" TV show is the version from the 1987 album One Way, and I think was also released on the 1989 album Identified. It starts with the "huuh!" sample. |

You sent me on a hunt. ;-) According to Wikipedia: "The band's next album, One Way in 1987, included one of their biggest hits, "Bad Boys", which was re-recorded for their 1989 album Identified and became the theme music for the Fox TV series Cops that year." So, if (slightly) true, the Identified version is the one that essentially replaced the original, on all comps and digital streaming. As of now, the full One Way album is on YouTube, which has the original mix of "Bad Boys." To me, this doesn't sound like a re-recording, just a different mix. @RoyalScam, yes, correcting myself from the initial version of this comment, I think Wikipedia may be right. On Discogs, I had seen that the Identified LP (and import CD) came out in 1989 with one version of "Bad Boys" on it. It was then reissued in 1991 with "Bad Boys (Remix With Rap)" added as a bonus track. I figured whoever added the Wikipedia info was apparently making incorrect inferences from this reissue CD. But having downloaded the reissue CD from someone, it seems both versions are remixed. I'd kinda prefer to confirm what's on the 1989 release though, just to be sure. |

It is on YouTube. By "streaming," I meant Spotify, et al. I should've been more specific. I ended up buying the One Way CD. I so prefer this version, and it is, IMO, the mix that was used on the TV show. I'm pretty certain what people are calling "newly-recorded" is just a remix. Sounds like the same vocal and same instrumental tracks as the 1987 version, just tweaked with additional EQ and reverb, and with an extended, less-abrupt, cleaner intro.
