This song almost broke the top 40, and is considered a "classic" by many 80s alternative fans today.
From Discogs and my own files, I'm tried to piece together exactly which versions came out when; if you can expand on what I have below, please do!
1978 -- The original release, before they were signed to Warner Bros Records, was faster and a "rougher" mix than the hit version that would come the next year. It ran 4:37 to 4:38 in length.
1979 -- WB released a new recording, slightly slower and a more polished mix, on the debut album from the band. The LP version ran 6:49 to 6:51.
1979 -- The single edit, on both 7" and 12", is a chopped down version of the LP version and allegedly runs about 4:52. To recreate, remove approximately 2:28 to 4:23 (before the drum fill).
I haven't been able to find a radio edit that would have taken it under this length in the United States, or a remix.
The one exception on length of the single is the 7" released in the Philippines, which runs 3:30 and according to notes on the listing in Discogs "fades early after the last chorus and doesn't include the nonsensical lines."
1986 -- it looks like the song was released again to Europe and the Philippines, this time with a 4:00 LP edit. Again I find no evidence of a remix.
Can anybody tell me if there was a radio edit in 1979 / 1980 when it hit the Hot 100, outside of the 4:52 edit?

I can only add that when the song hit the radio in my
area, I never heard it any shorter than the 4:52
commercial 45 edit.
I didn't know what to make of this band at first, but the
catchy guitar riffs, the crazy lyrics...such unbridled
silliness... I bought each single when they came out.
("Private Idaho" is my all time fav by them)

My promo is the 4:52 version on both the mono & stereo
sides.

Years ago, I purchased the digital 45 on iTunes that
runs 4:52 or so.
