The Gap Band - Burn Rubber on Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me) certainly didn't break the top 40 on Billboard's pop charts, but it went to #1 on the R&B charts and Billboard magazine ranked it as the 12th biggest R&B single of 1981.

I'm having a hard time determining for sure which version is the radio promo version.

The labels on the 7" singles on Discogs list a timing of 3:57 - 3:59.

There's also a 12" that lists a length of 5:30.

The vinyl LP lists on the label a length of 5:16.

I have three versions that run between 4:11 - 4:14.

I have another version, labeled "single mix," that runs 4:57.

I have two more versions, one running 5:24 and the other 5:33.

Does anybody have the radio promo? I'd like to make sure I put the right version in my library.

Thanks!!!

My copy, from Greatest Hits, runs 4:09. Checked over at
45cat and the label on the commercial 45 says 3:59.

I just noticed... if you take off the engine revving noises at the beginning, the length approximately matches the label... I wonder if the single had the engine noises at the beginning..?

Yes, the 45 had the revving at the beginning.

I just pulled the 45 and timed it ... listed (3:59) ..but actual is (4:09). There's your answer!

Perhaps they had planned to remove the opening sound effects for the 45, but changed their minds at the last minute. I do recall hearing it on radio cued past the effects. That was the top 40 station. The dance station always played the effects.
And one side note...with the amount I heard this on radio that year in NY, I was stunned it never made the national top 40.

There's my answer!!! Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help.

I remember hearing it a lot as well; baffled it didn't do better on the pop charts. I guess in 1981 we just weren't "ready" for it? I really don't know.

They and their sound would do better on the pop charts in the years to come, that's for sure!
