Was there ever a 45 for this song? It is in a few CD's with a runtime of 4:17-
4:18. There is also a John "Jellybean" Benitez Mix that runs 3:45. Does anyone know which one was played on the radio and which is the correct 45? |

No commercial 45 at the time for sure. I think most
stations played it off the Back To The Future soundtrack album. |

No 45 RPM 7" single... in the United States. Apparently, there was https://www.discogs.com/Huey-Lewis-And-The-News-Back-In-Time/master/717157 - in Japan and it was the Jellybean mix mentioned above.
The only promo listed for the United States was a 12" which appears to have had the LP version on it. My audience requested this song this week! This goes in my "I swear I heard it on radio and it was a hit" file of songs that should have been 45's and were huge but never released commercially. Even I thought Into The Groove by Madonna was a top 10 hit simply because I heard it on the radio all the time. If the rules pre-1999 were what they are now on Billboard it would never be an issue. So many great songs never charted that fall into this exact situation. |

It was top ten in airplay in "Radio & Records," #6 for two weeks, starting with the 6/28/85 issue. |

"Back In Time" was a Top 10 hit on both WLOL in
Minneapolis and WKTI in Milwaukee in late October 1985. Chrysalis missed out on a sure-fire Top 10 hit with that one. |

I'm not sure "missed out" is the correct term...Lewis' career was on fire from '84-87 with an almost unbroken string of top 10 hits. Most likely the rationale was to not cannibalize sales of his other singles during the movie's run, and to increase the sales of the soundtrack LP (assuming the LP was on Chrysalis). |

"The Power Of Love" was released as a single on Chrysalis. The
soundtrack, however, was on MCA. The band was between albums at the time. The last single from Sports ("Walking On A Thin Line") hit #18 in late 1984. The first single from Fore! ("Stuck With You") was released in late July 1986. So, I don't think releasing "Back In Time" as a single would've hurt them in the least. At the time, more hit singles meant more album sales (see "Thriller" and "Born In The USA"). |

The US promo 12" single and the Japanese 45 for "Back In Time" were both on Chrysalis at the time. |

Surely there must've been some legal or licensing reason they didn't release a commercial 45 in the US. Didn't they also not release Huey's "Bad is Bad" earlier in 1985? I remember
them showing the video a lot on Friday Night Videos and MTV, but I don't even think it debuted on the Billboard Rock chart... |

Funny how it wasn't released as a 45 yet it is on their Greatest Hits CD. I loved the song and never understood why it wasn't released on a 45....and Into The Groove was such a great song...pure Madonna and no 45? Another song that is featured in a greatest hits album. I actually have this song on two CDs. Madonna's Greatest Hits and the import CD single. |

Yes, but it never charted on The Hot 100 because it was never released as a 45 or 7 inch single. That's the whole point, it was never given a chance to supplement the high radio play with an actual available single. Until December 5, 1998 Billboard basically found these type of high airplay singles to be ineligible for the Hot 100 due to no "official" studio release. The point I was making that in this day and age it would have been a charted hit, and rightfully so. |

I also remember that video. You are correct about it not even hitting the Rock Tracks charts. I guess they figured they had enough hit singles off the Sports album. BTW, "Bad Is Bad" was released as the B-side of the "Power Of Love" 45 here in the US. |

The crazy thing about "Into The Groove" is, because it was
commercially available on the B-side of the "Angel" 12- inch single, it was allowed to chart on Billboard's R&B Singles chart at the time (peaked at #19). |

I remember reading an article in Billboard around this time that was talking about the increased no. of singles released from albums. "Bad is Bad" was mentioned as the potential sixth single from "Sports", but the article states Huey didn't want it released. He was worried about radio play, and quality diminishing once you got six deep. |
