Just thought this was worthy of some discussion and did not see anyone bring it up.

The 45 and 45 edit are both in mono. However, is the rough mix with vocal found on cd (which is in mono) the 45 version in mono that was originally released or some other mix?

It is also my understanding the 45 edit was pulled rather quickly because the band insisted that the 45 was the single and did not want instrumental edited out. I have the edit, but just wanted clarification on the 5:33 it comes from and where to find it.

I bumped up the Zeppelin edits thread for you. The mono 45s are fold-downs of the stereo mix.

Aaron,

Thanks but it doesnt answer my questions above in that thread about the 45 version and its location on CD.

The original version of Whole Lotta Love has only ever been released
on CD in stereo. The rough mix in mono is not the hit mix. The edit has
never appeared on CD either. To get the long 45 version, it's simply a
fold down of the stereo. For the edit, you'd have to create it using
editing software and then fold it to mono (or dub the 45).

I have heard the mono 45 is compressed (is it?). Now, not really
understanding what compressed actually means in terms of a mono
45, can we still say it's a fold-down if it's also compressed?
curious...

I believe many of the 45s issued back then were compressed purposely for AM radio play (made the vocals louder coming out of those transistor radios).

There may be some added compression on the 45, but when I compared it to a fold-down of the stereo mix, I didn't hear any mix differences.

Many of you probably know that on vinyl, the edit for "Whole Lotta Love" was found in stereo on the 1970 Various Artists album
from Atlantic titled "The Super Hits Volume 5". It sounds the same as the mono edit. I thought it was odd that they used the
edit for that compilation. Maybe it was to time out the 8 Track Tape version better.

The edited "Whole Lotta Love" was available into the early
to middle 1970's, pressed with the original Atlantic
stampers on the Atlantic Oldies Series. I own a copy of
this reissue. It is in mono.

Yes the mono edited 45 was a fold down but then they added some compression to make it cook. When I recreated it I did the same, it SO rocks with the extra punch.

It made the low-volume uncompressed full length 45 sound wussy by comparison.
