This week, "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow" by Dean Martin makes the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time. Dean recorded two Christmas albums during his career, A Winter Romance for Capitol in 1959 and The Dean Martin Christmas Album for Reprise in 1966, and he recorded versions of the song for each album.
Both versions run around 1:54-1:55. On the 1959 Capitol version, Dean's voice is the only voice you hear. There are background singers on the 1966 Reprise version, on which Dean says "It's snowing" before the song ends. As far as I can tell, neither version was released as a single until the 1959 Capitol version was released on one of those Capitol "For Jukeboxes Only" singles some time in the 1990s. This is also the version that appears on most, if not all, various artists compilations, including the Christmas edition in the NOW series. (The Reprise version is owned by the Dean Martin estate.) It is also the 1959 Capitol version that I have been hearing on the radio. |

Paul,
Just curious but would the influx of Xmas songs on the Hot 100 be the official releases in mono, as they originally came out during that time or are they now considered stereo which are the versions that are being played on the radio stations here? |

That's a good question and one I can't answer for certain. I do know that Billboard will combine the slightly different versions by the same artist (such as Bing Crosby's "White Christmas") into one entry. BTW, the main reason we're seeing higher peaks on many of these older Christmas songs is because the streaming numbers have really exploded this year. |

If you look at iTunes (where a few folks are probably buying the song) the song is available on two compilation CDs from 2013-14 "Christmas With The Rat Pack" and "Dino's Christmas" - both in stereo and on Capitol Records. |

Love those different versions! On the 8/25/18 Bubbling chart "Good Form" (from the just released album Queen) by Nicki Minaj charted for one week only - one of those cases where a bunch of album cuts by a hip-hop star charted for one week. Fast forward to the 12/8/18 bubbling under chart and the remixed version with Lil Wayne made the chart - and the following week is made the Hot 100. Billboard treated this as one entry...but is it really? The album version could be treated as a bubbling under entry only while the remixed version is a different song that actually charted much better. |

Andy Williams is back in the top 10 (for the first time since 1971) with a long ago xmas hit that was released originally decades ago. Mariah Carey's hit is also in the top 10. That makes two xmas songs in the top 10 at once, which hasn't happened in a long time if possibly ever... I fully expect in another two weeks to have things return to normal, but anytime you can score a top 10 hit over 50 years after it was released is worth mentioning! |

On Spotify, Andy Williams' hit "It's The Most Wonderful
Time Of The Year has nearly 188 million streams, his next song has only 25 million streams (Sleigh Ride.) Mariah Carey has near 480 million streams with "All I Want For Christmas Is You." Sure is a different world out there with streaming the last few years. That's nothing. 4 out of the entire top 10 are dominated by xmas songs from the late 50's to early 60's.
Paul Haney, Where was these streaming numbers for all the years since the change to include streaming numbers into the Billboard equation? This is the first year where it clearly has had an effect on the charts. But other than Mariah last year and the years before, why have none of these top 10 Xmas classics risen up the charts this way in 2016 and 2015 or 2014... |

The streaming numbers were there before, it's just that 2018 saw a dramatic rise in the overall numbers. Just a fact of life that so many more people are streaming this year as opposed to prior years. Also, keep in mind that any older titles must rank at #50 or higher to enter the Hot 100. If not for that rule, there would be even more Christmas titles on the chart this year. Billboard also compiles a special Holiday 100 chart that lists the Top 100 seasonal hits for those interested to see how they all compare. |

The options available for downloads are reduced from year

Here's another sign of the effect streaming data is having on the Hot 100. This week a 1:36 long song aimed at toddlers makes the Top 40, "Baby Shark" by Pinkfong. (It is kinda catchy.)
And I'm pretty sure that last week Brenda Lee set records for being both the youngest and the oldest female to have a Top 10 hit. The youngest when considering the artist's age when the recording was made (13) and the oldest when considering the artist's age when the recording made the Top 10 (74). (Although some sources claim that Tiffany was only 13 when she recorded "Could've Been".) Last week, Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" reached #1 on the Canadian Hot 100. |
