“I Get Around” is also not indicated as being a DES mix. I’m eager to
see what the Hit Parade team has come up with.
Carl Wilson recorded his guitar solo directly onto a dub of the mono
mix. Not only does a true stereo tape with all the vocal and instrumental
parts not exist, it has never existed.
A “stereo” mix does exist on bootlegs which synches the stereo backing
track with the final mono mix.

My apologies folks, "Sugar Shack" is indeed a "DES" mix
of the single version. The asterisk indicating so was
omitted by error on our website. We will fix that.
RE: "I Get Around" - we didn't label that as a "DES" mix
because it wasn't entirely created from a mono source.
But we DID use some DES technology to separate the
missing overdubs from the mono mix and add them to the 3-
track session master.
This gave us a more realistic sounding result than a
traditional sync-up like it had to be done in the past,
and doesn't have any of the problems that sync-ups have
always had.
Sorry for any confusion.

Curiously, was "Needles & Pins" re-worked to give it the
punch of the mono single? Every stereo mix of that I've
ever heard was a bit thin sounding, and didn't fold well.

From the sample, the "Needles & Pins" stereo mix appears to be the
original stereo mix from the 1964 LP "Meet the Searchers", with
lead vocals center, harmony left and rhythm section right. Most
CDs to date have featured a remix (rhythm section center, main
vocal right and harmony left), which was first issued in the 1970s
(on what LP I do not know). Perhaps that's why it has more punch.

On "Needles & Pins" Kapp Stereo good. Pye Stereo blows
chunks. Audio Fidelity has the correct version. Mixed for
Kapp Records, by Bob Auger at Kapp's insistence.

The Irma Thomas track uses the hit vocal or the alternate
vocal?

Irma Thomas is the LP version with the different vocal
take than the 45 version. We included the song to
introduce it to music fans who might never have heard it.
I wish we could have used the 45 version but it was a last
minute addition.

Another Irma Thomas song that I'd never heard (even though having been
more than familiar with the b-side) that I absolutely love! What a singer and
great arrangement!
Now, you've made me add the 45 version to my want list!
