Is anyone an expert on "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel? I have the LP Version (5:23) and a different mix (pulled from a TM Century Gold Disc) that runs 4:58. This "remix" sounds just like the 12" single that I have, but it's edited in length. Would this be a DJ only edit of the original 45? Pat's 8th Edition of Top 40 Music On CD indicates that DJ copies ran 4:36 and 6:15, but the 4:36 may have been a misprint on the label, or I may have an entirely different edit altogether.
Also, the 8th Edition doesn't specify anything about Wham's "Freedom," except that it's on "Make It Big" (which is the LP Version of course). But I also have a mix (pulled from an old "Now" compilation from the UK) that has some synthesizer "horns" at the end of the song; it runs 5:18, and I believe this is the 45 version. Anyone know? I compared this version to the "Long Mix" on my 12" single, which runs 6:16 according to the label, and they are very close but the 5:18 version does not appear to just be an edit of the "Long Mix" (different drum intro). I also have an import CD of Wham extended mixes (Epic 450125-Australian import), and it has the "Long Mix" with a run time of 7:06, but this sounds like an extended version of the LP Version (no "horns" at the end). Can anyone shed some light on this subject?

Yes, the 5:18 version with the synthesizer horns and the George Michael ad libs towards the end is the US 45 version. It's also on the Wham import comp, "The Final."
In addition, the 45 version of "Everything She Wants," which is the short remix with only the first half of the vocal bridge from the extended version, is available on the UK CD single of "Last Christmas," which has:
1. Last Christmas
2. Last Christmas (Pudding Mix)
3. Everything She Wants
"The Final" also has the 45 version of "I'm Your Man."
Now... I'm not sure where to find the full-length version of "Edge of Heaven." The "Music from the Edge of Heaven" CD cuts the last couple seconds of the studio chatter at the end. The import "The Final" did include the full version on the original pressing I had back in the late '80s, but that got scratched and I replaced it, and the second one I got also faded out the chatter! I'm sure the full version is available on some CD or other, but I don't know which one.

I finally got my hands on the DJ 45 of "In Your Eyes" and the label incorrectly lists (4:36) as the run time. The actual run time is (4:58) like on the TM Century disc I mentioned above.

Sorry for taking so long to respond to your inquiry. "In Your Eyes"
was originally released as a 45 (Geffen 28622) in 1986. The A-side
is a remix, listed as 6:15 and timed at 6:12. The B-side is a Special
Mix (which is more like a dub version of the song), listed as 7:14 and
timed at 7:10. In 1989, the song was re-released as a 45 (WTG
68936) to coincide with being featured on the soundtrack for the
film Say Anything. The B-side was a song by Fishbone,
"Skankin' To The Beat." I don't have this particular 45, but Joel
Whitburn lists the time as 4:53. Interestingly, the soundtrack CD
(which I also don't have) lists the time for "In Your Eyes" as 5:23, the
same as the original LP version from So. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, Paul. I'm guessing that the (4:53) run time is probably the same as the (4:58) one that I have, but faded a little early (or incorrectly timed). Does anyone know which version is featured on the Say Anything soundtrack? I've also seen the time listed as (5:23), which leads me to believe it's the LP version. The (4:58) mix has the alternate vocals toward the end:
"Accepting all I’ve done and said
I want to stand and stare again
Til there’s nothing left out, oh
It remains there in your eyes
Whatever comes and goes
Oh it’s in your eyes"

I have the WTG Promo CD for radio stations. Says 4:53 on it but it runs 4:58 so that one is mis-timed. It has the alternate vocal at the end.
I think I originally gave Pat the info on the 4:36 DJ copy as I have it. I just gave him the label time. I should have timed. So there is not 4:36 length, that's a label error too.

In addition to the alternate vocal at the end(which I think is the much better version), the intro is cut from the LP version as well.

Fetta, I think you mean the intro of the (4:58) version is half the length of the intro of the LP version. That's true. The (4:58) version can actually be created by editing the (6:15) 45 version. It takes five or six edits and early fade.

Not that I know of. It's a different mix than the LP.

The ending on the 45 is also completely different with the line "accepting all I have said and done, I want to stop and stare again, in your eyes".
The only way that I know this ending exists is the 45 (and I do beleive there are 2 different 45's but only one has this mix) and the promo cd single which I bought on ebay.
This mix I think is far superior than the LP.

Brian, I don't think the full version of "The Edge Of Heaven" has been released anywhere on CD to my knowledge. Only the 45(both US and the 7" & 12" import versions)I know for sure did have the chatter at the end. The Best Of Wham compilation uses the one with the earlier fade at the end. Maybe "The Final" CD has the full length version that appeared on the 45 and the 7" and 12" import EP's.

This thread has been quite helpful for me trying to decipher where the various "In Your Eyes" versions have appeared.
I have the 4:58 promo version on The "A" List, which is similar to the TM Century collections. I was listening to the fade-out extra loud to see if it was taken from vinyl, and I noticed that the very end of the fade-out actually skips three times, about 1/4-second each, then cuts abruptly to silence. You can hear it if you boost the levels by about 60 dB (yes, 60 dB - you really can't hear it at all in normal listening conditions).
My question for someone with the TM discs - does your version of the 4:58 promo edit end this way?

still not clear on whether this was released domestically, but the compilation
disc "Twenty-Five" by George Michael has the 5:20 version of Wham's
"freedom" on it.

No, it does not. I'm sure that theirs is not a vinyl transfer. To confirm it, I have seen a listing for a promo CD of "In Your Eyes," which was re-released for the Say Anything movie. That promo CD has the 4:58 DJ edit on it. The unedited single remix still has not surfaced on CD, to my knowledge.

more about the Wham issue. As aaronk mentioned above, the 5:18 version
of Freedom with the horns and added vocal ad-libs on the fade out is very
similar to the US 12" version that runs 6:18. In fact, the only difference is
that the 12" version has a minute of intro that ends almost cold, at which
point it kicks into the 5:18 version . So the 12" version is simply the 5:18
remix version with 1 minute intro tacked onto it. And I agree that the "Long
Mix" on the Wham Extended Mixes CD is basically an extended version of
the LP mix.

Presently, the database states the following comment for Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes":
(dj copies of this 45 stated (4:36) but actually ran (4:58), and (6:15) but actually ran (6:11); commercial copies were all (6:11))
Pat, you might want to revise the last part to indicate that commercial copies run (6:11), not (6:15) as stated on the record label.

I don't have the 7" but I do own the 12" (also containing the single version), and it runs (6:16). The fadeout is very low at the end, so you have to crank the volume up loud to hear it. It's possible, of course, that the 12" could run a few seconds longer.

I just stumbled across a second US promo 45 for "In Your Eyes" (PRO-S-
2602), which has the LP version on both sides and a printed time of 5:22. If
anyone recalls hearing the LP version on the airwaves during its chart run,
this promo may be one explanation.

I honestly don't remember hearing "In Your Eyes" much at all back in the '80s, so I can't recall which version got airplay during either of the song's chart runs. Of course, the LP version is what radio has been playing exclusively for years now... which is too bad because the 45 version and radio edit with the alternate verses is superior, in my humble opinion.

Aaron..... All I ever remember hearing on the radio was the LP version and
now I here the 1989 WTG reissue version.
I am still confused by this track. From reading the thread and knowing
what I know, there seems to be 3 versions:
The LP version
The Original Geffen 45 version with a listed time of 6:15
The WTG re-release (in 1989) with a listed time of 4:53
I am very familiar with the album version and the WTG re-release which is
a remix and has added verses towards the end. I have never heard the
original Geffen 45 from 1986. Is the original 45 a remix like the WTG re-
release or is it the same mix as the LP but only longer?

To Fetta:
The original commercial 45 is the unedited version of the WTG remix (a/k/a short side of the original promo 45).

Thanks Andy...... I didnt even realize that the WTG version was on the
orignal promo 45. Maybe that makes sense as to why I've only ever heard
the LP and the WTG version. The 6:15 time on the original 45 may have
been just too long to play, especially with options that were shorter in
length......especially for a song that didnt even crack the top 20 (which still
amazes me).

There are actually four versions, all released in 1986, that I know of:
1. LP version (5:22) (on So LP and one of the promo 45s)
2. 45 version (6:15 listed time, actually runs 6:16) (on Geffen 45 and 12" singles - never issued on any CD that I'm aware of)
3. edit of 45 version (4:36 and 4:53 listed times, but they both run 4:58) (on one of the promo 45s and later issued on promo CD to promote "Say Anything")
4. "Special Mix" (on b-side of US 45 and 12" singles)

To Fetta:
AOR played the 6:15 version at the time 'cos it was serviced to them on promo 12" [Geffen PRO-A-2558] with no 4:53 edit.
P.S. The listed time of the promo 45 short side was 4:36 even though it timed out *near* 4:53.
Andy
edit: I see Aaron timed it out closer to 4:58!

I should also clarify that my 6:16 timing of the full-length 45 version comes from the 12" single. Others have timed their 7" copies to be a few seconds shorter (see page 1).

1. Live Version (listed 8:45; actual 8:44)
It doesn't have an insert, and the only credits on the disc say that it's taken from the soundtrack to "Say Anything..." There's no indication of where the live recording was made, but apparently it was issued on the B-side of the 1989 WTG stock 45.

I just found that the reissue "Back To Back Hits" 45 b/w
"Sledgehammer" (Geffen 21987) has a misprint. It is
listed 6:15 but fades around 4:55 so is likely the promo
edit.

Both the Single Version and the Special Remix of "In Your Eyes" made their digital debut last Friday on the download-only Peter Gabriel collection called "Flotsam and Jetsam." It contains a number of other rarities as well, including both extended mixes of "Sledgehammer." It is downloadable by track in flac format on Qobuz:

Just wanted to add that for those looking for the 4:58-ish radio edit of the Single Mix of "In Your Eyes", as issued as the promo 45 in 1986 and later on the 1989 commercial 45, it has also recently been reissued digitally on Peter Gabriel's 'Rated PG' collection, available at the same locations as the 'Flotsam and Jetsam' collection mentioned above.
FYI, I am not fully convinced that this new transfer of the 4:58 edit is taken from the master tape, as there are some pops toward the end of the file that *could* be vinyl noise (or it could just be interference that got into the mix when the edit was created … I am undecided). The 6:15 version from 'Flotsam and Jetsam' sounds fuller and richer to my ears and can be edited down to successfully recreate a good-sounding version of the 4:58 edit without too much trouble.

BTW, the "Rated PG" collection gets a digipak CD release on June 12th (just in a few days), but the time listed for "In Your Eyes" is 5:07. Also gets released on black vinyl on the same day.

Hi Santi & Other Interested Parties-
Wanted to provide some clarification based on the purchased download of 'Rated PG' that I have. The file does run to 5:07, but the audio of "In Your Eyes" ends right at 5:00. If you boost the volume at the end of the file, the last 7 seconds is just electronic hiss and pops, etc. So, assuming the to-be-released CD matches the download version, it is the correct 45 "radio edit" version of the song.
When compared to the 1989 WTG Records promo CD single, the actual audio on 'Rated PG' runs about 2 seconds longer, and not due to speed difference. The audio on the promo CD ends as Peter sings "It's in...." at 4:58. On 'Rated PG', you can hear the completion of that line, "...your eyes", and a tiny bit of background vocal singing "magnifi-que!" as the fade ends at the 5-minute mark.
(I don't have the vinyl 45 from 1986 or 1989, so I'm not sure if the 1989 promo CD ended a couple of seconds early when compared to the vinyl version, or if the new transfer on 'Rated PG' ends barely later than the original 45.)

Based on the duration, I'd assume it is the 1987 Live in Athens version, as used for the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Y4aajNVZHE - the music video that I remember seeing on MTV around 1989 . They skip a minute of the intro for the video, but it's otherwise intact. This mix was eventually released somewhat brickwalled in 2007 on the https://www.discogs.com/release/996334-Peter-Gabriel-Peter-Gabriel - Mail On Sunday UK promo CD .
(A similar, but different live recording of "In Your Eyes" was on the 2012 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHRUYOU6DFo - Live in Athens concert video. The audio of this was on disc 2 of the So 25th Anniversary CD and was reissued on digital & LP in 2020 as a separate https://petergabriel.bandcamp.com/album/live-in-athens-1987 - Live in Athens 1987 release. Apparently this one was recorded at one of the other two shows performed in Athens at the end of that tour.)
