I have a question about notation in the database regarding some of Aretha Franklin's early Atlantic hits, including "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman."
I assume that most (all?) of the early Atlantic hits had dedicated mono mixes, which were specifically mixed for mono and weren't fold-downs of a stereo mix. I also assume that the early Atlantic 45s all included the mono mixes. (Let me know if either of those two assumptions is wrong.) I noticed that for "I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)," "Respect," and "Baby I Love You," the database uses notation of stereo (S) or mono (M), and nothing further. I also noticed that for "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," the stereo (S) tracks are also given a notation of "LP version" and the mono (M) tracks are given a notation of "45 version." Is the convention of stereo = LP and mono = 45 true for the earlier singles, too? What was on the mono versions of the LP (e.g., dedicated mono mixes? same mono mixes as the 45s? fold-downs of the stereo?) I did test a few of the early hits and I found a few are fold-downs and others have mix differences that determine the "LP Version" notation. For example, "Respect" you can fold-down and basically get the mono 45 version. But if i recall right, on "Natural Woman" the LP version has some backing vocals potted up that were mixed down in the mono 45. I'm sure all the mono singles were dedicated mixes, but if Pat has no notation it means nothing particular stands out as being different in the M/S versions. MM |

"Natural Woman" in mono (available on Time-Life/Rhino's
"Solid Gold Soul: Deep Soul" as mastered by Dennis Drake) has less emphasis on the horn overdubs in the chorus. This is one of several original stereo mixes I actually prefer to the "hit" mono mix. I think the mono mix, while it has the typical punchy mono drum track, tends to sound more like a demo while the stereo mix gives you more insight to the fully realized arrangements and sounds like a fleshed-out production. ------------- https://thelunarlaugh.bandcamp.com/ - Listen to The Lunar Laugh! |

Is this song "A Natural Woman (You Make Me Feel Like)"
or "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman"? I have seen different 45s online which show either title. |
