I'm not sure if this was changed in future editions of the book, but in my 8th Edition, Paul Young's "Everytime You Go Away" is listed several times as "45 Version but with a 12 second longer fade." I listened to a copy of the song that is listed as such, and it doesn't sound like the 45 version I remember. I have the 80's Pop Culture Box that Rhino released and this version does sound like the 45 version I remember--the drums are different on this version (they don't echo). Again, this is only from my memory, as I don't have the 45 to compare anymore. Anyone know?

aaronk.........you're in luck.....i have the song "everytime you go away" by paul young that was issued in 1985 on columbia 04867 and have just listened to it side by side with the version that is on the 80's box set "Like, Omigod! The '80s Pop Culture Box (Totally)" and it is identical........the face of the 45 states that the run time is 4:10 while the actual run time is 4:15.......this should clear up THIS matter...

edtop40, THANKS! I actually just got my hands on the 45 today, too. This new breaking information, of course, means that there is a misprint in Top 40 Music On CD. On Paul Young's CD "From Time To Time - The Singles Collection" (Columbia 48829), the book says "45 version but with a :12 longer fade," which should read "neither the 45 or LP version." The same thing goes for Power Of Love (Madacy 6803), and possibly several others.

hey aaronk......there is a lot of mistakes in this book.......i don't know whether anyone but me takes the time to actually listen to the 45 vrs cd versions...

edtop40, that's why this message board is here, right? So we can share our findings and track down the correct versions of the hits on CD. And, of course, so Pat can make his book more accurate. If I'm not mistaken, he works on it by himself. If you ask me, he's done a pretty thorough job for just one man. But no, you're not the only one who cares about matching the 45s to the CD versions. Why do you think I post on here? :) I see your point though. The average consumer probably doesn't care if they get the 3:00 edit or the 5:00 album version.

Allow me to take a moment to second your comments, aaronk. I think Pat has done an incredible job with his book and it has been invaluable in helping me track down versions of songs on CD that I wouldn't have been able to find on my own. If I can say it's taken me a good chunk of time to list and research information for over 100 DJ edits on this message board, then I can only imagine the titanic amount of time, effort, and money it's taken Pat to compile and publish information for an entire dictionary-size 1,300+ page book! It's probably safe to say that any profit Pat has made on his book probably pales in comparison to the investment he's made in putting it together, which is a true testament to his love for this hobby.
I think this message board serves as a terrific supplement to the book as we eagerly await the 11th edition's release sometime later this year. You can bet it will be more accurate and up-to-date than ever before, and some well-deserved credit can certainly go to the many contributions of frequent message board posters like edtop40, Brian W., aaronk, 80smusicfreak, and Bob Lovely (I don't mean to leave anyone else out here, but these folks in particular have posted in double digit numbers).
Keep up the great work, everyone, and let's continue to do our part to help Top 40 Music on Compact Disc solidify its place as the "music bible" for collectors!

It just happened last night I was searching my Cd's for a copy of this - and as usual had my "Downey" opened to it. I was confused by the "45 version...etc." listings - because I too remembered the song didn't have that irritating echo in it until "The Singles Collection" was released. I was just about to post this question but glad I did a search first! Thanks to the other posters for confirming this for me, as I got rid of my 45 years ago, but I swore that this echo remix was not the hit 45. And, because it was issued on his "hits" collection we have another "Immacualte Collection" situation where it becomes the most used for airplay in later years, unfortunately.
On a side note about small inaccuracies in the book; I find them from time to time like all of us, but these are far outweighed by the enormity of valuable information in it. Everytime we share them with Pat, it only makes an even better book next time around. To this day I'm surprised to hear 45's I haven't heard in years where I always assumed they were just an edit, and now hear some small detail or a different mix I never noticed at the time. But Pat should be very proud. Years back my friends and me only referred to the "Whitburn" - the bible of top 40. Now more often we refer to "the Downey", and I have reason to pick it up almost daily.

Other than the added reverb on the drums and the extended 12 second length, are there any other differences found on the From Time to Time...The Singles Collection version of Paul Young's "Everytime You Go Away" compared to the correct 45 version? If not, then maybe all CDs containing the Singles Collection version should have the accompanying comment only slightly modified to read this way: (45 version with added reverb and a :12 longer fade). Pat, what's your take on this?

I'd say "neither 45 or LP version" since this is clearly a different mix. The reverb is not subtle.

The 45 version (about 4:16) has no echo on the drums.
The LP version (about 5:26) has a whole lot of echo on the drums.
The confusion arises from the 1991 Paul Young anthology From Time To Time The Singles Collection, which is essentially the LP mix edited to mimic the 45 (about 4:29). There are small portions of this version that can't be edited down from the true LP version, but on the whole, it's clearly the LP mix. This version didn't exist before 1991.
