So this is rather interesting. Everyone knows the radio version times in at 3:21 and matches the album version which is on Replay.
I was comparing times to Whitburn's annual and he has a 3:13 running time. Considering that is an 8 second difference I did further research:
https://www.discogs.com/Iyaz-Solo/release/3582823 - https://www.discogs.com/Iyaz-Solo/release/3582823
Apparently this promo has a 3:14 but it is not the album version. It is a radio edit. After checking the promo disc, the 3:14 listed in Whitburn's book is correct, it is a radio edit that got played. It leaves off the 6 seconds of the instrumental found on the album version at the intro.

Rich,
My copy from TM Studios runs 3:01 and starts off with
vocal right away. Is that the radio edit you referenced or
another version?

"Solo" was a hit during the era when we were getting a lot
of promo CD singles. Yes, the time is taken from that
promo CD as it was the version I was hearing on the radio
at the time.

With all this time due to this panademic, I am painstakingly matching your 2010 top 40 annual listing (doing each year of the 2010s) in the annual with the actual audio lossless file. Sometimes Paul you take me to school and I discover a promo I did not know existed!
I didn't want to step on your toes but where do the running times you post in the annual come from? Also I know that a lot of radio edits are not commercially available (and some were) yet the annual makes no reference to them because of this? Some songs can't fade early in 2010 (think Glee, especially Like A Prayer) and some songs run a second faster then your printed time. Overall your 2010 is very accurate unless a radio edit exists, in which case that becomes the go to version in my collection....
Always interested in your thought process...

The 3:13-3:14 version was the digital single.
Rich, is your copy of the Replay album a US pressing? I can't find any evidence that it was released in the US and it is not listed in the database.

We collect everything that makes the Hot 100 and Bubbling
Under charts. Nowadays, of course, that means digital
downloads. I actually time each and every song every
single week. I don't go by the time of the file, as
there can be a second or two (or more) of silence at the
end. I time from the time the song actually starts and
ends (that may account for the 1 or 2 second
differences).
Back in the day, if we got an official promo CD single, I
would use that as the "official" piece in our collection.
That's what happened with "Solo". As you probably know,
sometimes only a 12" single was commercially available
and often times that would have an extended version, so
the CD promo would always trump that. Basically, I just
used my judgement on which version was the correct one.
I think I did a pretty good job of it. Of course, I'm
always open to fixing any errors that may be discovered.
Thanks to this board, I've corrected a lot of times in
the Pop Annual over the years!

Interesting! I'm almost done with the 2010 top 40, I can post my html list (thanks to crapfromthepast for his great mp3tag HTML assistance). Like I said I include the radio edits which were not always out on CD but were available to radio stations. I can usually accept a 1 to 2 second difference like you said. Its usually the Glee stuff that ends in acapellas lol!
You are correct now its basically digital downloads (which I keep up with Paul every week thanks to promo only and by paying for the clean/explicit versions each week). Sometimes it can be downright hard to assemble because you would think every track would be available but some are not even released clean at all. It makes me realize the CD is becoming more and more something of the past in terms of single releases.
Still what I asked before about the radio edits, is it because they are not commercially available at times that those are not included in the times in the annual?

There are no US pressings of Replay. It is only available as an import as I am fond of the remixes on it, which is why I got it. Also TM Primecuts refers to the 3:21 of Solo as with intro, indicating there was a version without the intro, which is the one on the promo.

We can only show one time in the Pop Annual, so I try to
use my discretion on which time to show. Since we used
the times of the commercial 45s from 1955-1989, I will
usually go with the commercially available version, unless
it's like the 12" singles I mentioned in my previous post.
Of course, there could always be exceptions. Again, it's
sometimes a judgement call.
