It's on the full-length Duran Duran album, Capitol's Big Thing (1988). And that's it. The LP version is sparse and weird, compared to the 45 version. I can see why this version of the song isn't used on any later CDs. 45 version (3:48) The promo CD single is Capitol DPRO-79426, copyright 1988, with the following two tracks: 1 - "7 Inch Mix", printed 3:47, actual 3:48 2 - "Big Mix", printed 7:25, actual 7:33 The following discs use the same analog transfer as the promo CD single:
My recommendations Assuming you want the 45 version... If you want a single-artist CD, I love the first Duran Duran greatest hits package, Capitol's Decade (1989). Superb sound, nice track selection (except it omits "New Moon On Monday"). This was a favorite CD of mine back when. If you want a compilation CD, I can endorse EMI's Rock 'N Roll Relix 1988-1989 (1998), which seems to be mostly (entirely?) made up of level-shifted digital clones of other existing CDs, without any early fades, added compression/limiting, or noise reduction. ------------- There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one http://www.crapfromthepast.com" rel="nofollow - Crap From The Past . |

Greatest has the track running at 3:48 so I'm
assuming it also contains the "7 inch mix" but I have nothing else to compare it to. The Levels on this disc are a bit on the louder side, though the dynamics (thankfully) aren't completely obliterated. It was compiled and "co-remastered" by Nigel Reeve at Abbey Road and compared to other discs that were coming out from Abbey Road around the same time, this one seems a little more tame and free of those dreaded NoNoise artifacts. Decade beats Greatest in sound quality
across the board, but Greatest does have a great song selection. Too bad they never produced a good 2- disc Duran Duran Greatest Hits before the loudness wars began. It would have also been great to include the Arcadia and Power Station hits too. |

Right. Decade is still missing "Union of The Snake" and the 90s stuff which is the major reason I sprung for Greatest all those years ago. I personally could have done without the non-US Hits ("Planet Earth" doesn't do much for me) and wish they could have been replaced with the likes of "Election Day" by Arcadia. A big issue with compiling Duran Duran is that they had so many variations in some of their big hits. I, for one, was more familiar with the video versions of their hits than anything else. They were the quintessential 'image band', really. You would need 3 discs to include all of Rio, those songs are brilliant. Every song on Rio is worth listening to. While there hits post 2000 are not of the same quality adding them to the mix (Reach Up For The Sunrise, Falling Down) is necessary to round it out. Leaving off New Moon on Monday on Decade was a big mistake. ------------- Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD." |

"New Moon on Monday" was only included on Greatest, whereas "Union of the Snake" appears both on Decade and Greatest. |

Additionally, "Serious" was the only track from Liberty (1990) that appeared on Greatest because Liberty was a failure. I think "Violence of Summer (Love's Taking Over)" could have been included on Greatest representing Liberty instead of including "Serious". |

As I understand it, "Serious" originally wasn't going to be on the tracklist, but was added in (and subbed out a different song, but I can't remember which) since it's a bit of a fan favorite. |

In the case of Greatest most of the tracks were included on their 45 versions in order to fit 19 tracks on a single CD. Decade used the LP version of "Rio" and the UK 45 version of "Save a Prayer", but Greatest uses the US 45 versions of those two songs. |
