The Little River Band's 1982 "Greatest Hits" album was
reissued on CD around 2000 adding six more tracks to the 12 on the original vinyl/cassette versions. For this single, a different vocal take was used on the reissued CD. Does anyone know why and whether later pressings of the CD corrected this? |

I have the corrected version of the disc. I also bought
the original remaster with the incorrect vocal take, but later got rid of it because I was PO'd about the mistake. I now regret getting rid of that CD now that I know how rare it is. I think there was also something different with another song on the remaster, possibly "The Night Owls". I think it was slightly remixed or something like that. If I recall, Amazon had (maybe still has) MP3's of the incorrect versions. Now exactly why they used the incorrect versions in the first place, I have no idea. ------------- Dan In Philly |

I never got the remastered hits compilation but the
alternate takes on the rare initial pressings are "Man On Your Mind," "The Night Owls" and "Take It Easy On Me." Probably not intentional since they corrected it on later pressings (but we may never know exactly why the alternates were used). Not sure if both the corrected and initial pressings both are "loud" but several previous Little River Band threads do mention it "is mastered pretty harshly with lots of compression/limiting." ------------- Santi Paradoa Miami, Florida |

It's not something that happens often with major labels
but once in a while, when new digital transfers are being compiled, whomever is in charge of going through the vault (usually the label's compilation producer/project head) will pull the wrong version of a song. Sometimes this happens because a tape box was mislabled or simply by human error. I'd heard that whoever was producing the GH disc intentionally used the three alternate mixes from the Time Exposure sessions, knowing that they'd never been released before and that they'd be appealing to fans. I'd also heard that LRB had a clause in their contract that stated that LRB compilations couldn't use previously unreleased material, so that the disc was quickly rereleased with the hit mixes.

Plausible, though LRB intended to release an entire compilation of rarities as a bonus mail-in offer with their Rhino "Twentieth Anniversary" compilation in 1994. Granted, this CD was not to be available in stores but it was to sport a few previously unreleased things and it was (presumably) sanctioned by the band. I hope not! I think it was just carelessness. Hits albums are intended for casual fans that want the versions they know. I personally can't stand when record companies do this. Sometimes, it is barely noticeable. (I swear the recording of "Sam" on Olivia Newton-John's "Back To Basics" album is not the vocal take from the hit version.) But, different recordings altogether are frustrating. On Juice Newton's "Anthology," they included the original 1975 recording of "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)." They should have included the 1981 recording either from the "Juice" album or the remixed single that was the hit that everyone knows. Does the "Twentieth" compilation include the album and/or single versions of their hits? |

Rhino's 2-CD Reminiscing The Twentieth Anniversary Collection (1994) includes mostly LP versions of the hits.

Another thumbs up for the Reminiscing set. Ron brought this one to my attention years ago and the sound quality and track selection are stellar. It was nice to also delve a little deeper into their catalog. Highly recommended. |

included more singles than so many album and live tracks. Among the missing are later singles like "Listen To Your Heart," "If I Get Lucky" and "Every Time I Turn Around." Is "It's Not A Wonder" the live single version? |

No, it's the Album Version. The live single version has never been on CD as far as I know. How many single versions do they have? I know there's 45 edits of "Reminiscing", "Lady", "Lonesome Loser" and of course the Live "It's Not A Wonder", but how many others do they have? That's what the Little River Band needs - a
complete compilation of all their singles in their 45/radio versions. Like so many acts, there have been umpteen compilations released for them that are incomplete, mix album and single version or commit the ultimate compilation sin - re-recordings! |

It would be nice if they released all 45 versions on cd
but not brickwalled. I know that TM Century had done some of their hits if not all of them. |

I'm pretty sure it's not the 45 version I was told that
the time was wrong on that song. TM Century is the only place to get this 45 version of Lady. |

If you want the 45 version of The Night Owls it's on a
Time Life made in the UK Singers and Songwriters 1980 1983 2 cd set but the song seems brickwalled to me. |

Today I finally found a used copy of the original pressing of the 2000 "Greatest Hits" with the rare, alternate versions that I gave away almost 20 years ago. I figured it must have been an original copy since it had the cut-out mark on the spine of the CD case. Compressed like you'd expect, but nice to have for only a few bucks. ------------- Dan In Philly |
