This top 50 hit from 1986 appears to run 5:43. Some listings on discogs claim a label running time of 4:59 or 5:05. Aaron has confirmed that the single version is 5:02.

This is the only CD I could find on Discogs that would appear to have the 45 Version (assuming the listed running time is correct, of course).

Is this song in mono? I'm not using headphones, but sticking my head between the speakers, I don't detect anything out of dead-center.

Narrow stereo, yes. The reverb is in stereo. Hi-hat panned very slightly right. End sax panned slightly right (maybe not so much on the 45 though). In headphones it's easy to hear the difference if you have a mono/stereo switch, or just switch back and forth between a fold-down and the original.

Is the short version just an early fade of the album
version? The Discogs listing for the above cd says that the
track on the cd is an early fade of the album version (But,
as we all know, that is not always the true case).

No, it's an edit. They removed some of the sax solo from 1:47 to 1:57; it's a clean cut at the down beat on each end. Then it's faded early.
If the fade on DjPaulT's rip of the US 45 is correct, you can do a linear fade lasting 12 seconds and ending about 1¼ second before the down beat where the hi-hat comes back in at about the 5-minute mark (exact endpoint will vary depending on the speed of your album version source; my copy of The Final CD plays slightly fast, I think, so it ended up at exactly 4:58). Do a 2nd linear fade over the same section and the fade slope will be about right.
