| Sorry for the off-topic post, but you guys are amongst the most music-knowledgeable people I know on the web. I find I really like '70s and '80s covers of '60s hits, maybe because I like productions from those 2 decades so much. So for instance, songs like "Da Doo Ron Ron", "Please Mr. Postman", "Always Something There to Remind Me", "I Think We're Alone Now" (Rubinoos version) ... I find I like the '70s & 80s cover versions more than the originals. (They were also the first versions I heard of the songs). I've got a playlist of songs that fit this bill but I'd like to expand it & discover more '70s and '80s records that are covers of '60s hits - I know most of the top 40 hits that are '70s/'80s covers, so I'm asking you guys - do you know of any such covers that aren't top 40 hits - they can be non-charters, album cuts, anything really... Thanks in advance. |

Not sure if this is what you mean, but check out Roberta
Flack's 1978 "Come Share My Love" (the original barely charted for Julie Monday in 1966 as "Come Share The Good Times With Me"). Stiffed by Roberta, and for that matter anyone else who recorded it but a favorite of mine. |

In 1988, the California Raisins covered I Heard It Through The Grapevine, their signature song. The cover was not top 40, but did chart on the Hot 100.

Hykker, I didn't know of that version of "Come Share My Love" but that's exactly what I'm talking about. I only knew of the Debby Boone version since buying her 1978 LP back in the day. I probably only discovered the Roberta Flack version of the song 10-15 years ago. I believe its release was also 1978 (?). But if I recall, Debby's version came out after Roberta's. I didn't realize its writer Joe Brooks was having cuts back as far as 1966, but I'll check out this Julie Monday version.
Richie, I discovered the Boys Town Gang cover when buying a whole slew of UK 5-CD boxed sets of 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s & themed comps that this one label put out. So many good '70s and '80s finds on those. Also some good ones from their '90s and '00s boxed set, but for me, not as many. Speaking of Debby Boone's "Come Share My Love", it was written by Joe Brooks who wrote "You Light Up My Life". If any of you don't know the story about the latter part of Joe Brooks' life, google it. It's quite wicked. And not something I'd expect from the writer of "You Light Up My Life"! |

Just checking my copy of the Julie Monday song, the author is listed as G. Kennington, "J. Brooks" was listed as the writer on the B side though. The lyrics on the 70s remakes (Pia Zadora also covered it) were slightly different than on the original...maybe that was Joe's contribution? |

Kennington" - which is odd because the 1978 recordings say written by Joe Brooks. I wonder if Joe Brooks bought out the song from G. Kennington and claimed credit for writing it, though he actually didn't. Or if this is a typo on the 45 label. Though since the B-side says written by Joe Brooks, and he clearly produced the A-side, it seems more likely that Joe bought out the song (or just outright took credit for it). It seems less likely that G. Kennington's name got stuck on it, out of nowhere. But we'll never know. |

| Hykker, since you know of the original, do you know if this Julie Monday version came out on CD anywhere? I just checked ebay and they don't seem to be selling one at the moment. But that doesn't mean no CD exists. I thought I'd heard her name before but then realized I'm probably thinking of Julie London. |

From Wikipedia: Brooks wrote a number of songs for the film: he also revived for the soundtrack the 1966 Julie Monday regional hit "Come Share the Good Times With Me" with the title adjusted to "Come Share My Love" (Brooks had produced the Julie Monday recording but its songwriting credit had been to Gilbert Kennington a pseudonym for Brooks' brother Gilbert Kaplan: however authorship of "Come Share My Love" was credited to Brooks himself).
Not much seems to be known about Ms. Monday...she recorded a couple of tunes then seems to have vanished. I don't think there ever was an album, and know of no CDs that have it. Quite a few copies of the 45 for sale on Discogs. One of my all-time favorite songs. |

GQ did covers of Billy Stewart's "Sitting in the park"
and "I do love you". Smokey Robinson remade "I'll try something new" in the early 80's that was an earlier hit for him and the Miracles. Carrie Lucas and Whispers covered "Hello Stranger" initially done by Barbara Lewis and the Dells. KC and Terri Desario did "Yes I'm ready" which was originally done by Barbara Mason. Suave did a late 80's version of "My girl". Sybil covered two Dionne Warwick hits, "Walk on by" and "Don't make me over" Dtrain on the Prelude label did a boogie version of "Walk on by" as well. Isaac Hayes covered numerous 60's songs when he was at Stax. Bruce Willis covered some Motown songs if you like cheese. George Benson used 4 bar phrasing on an updated "On Broadway" originally done by the Drifters. Bill Wolfer at Solar/Constellation covered "Papa was a rolling stone w/a vocodor. Cheesy again but maybe your thing! Marvin and Tammi's "If this world were mine" was redone by Luther Vandross with an elaborate Nat Adderley Jr. arrangement. |

| "One Chain Don't Make No Prison", a #41 1974 hit for the Four Tops, was a cover of a Denny Lambert 1969 "B" side on T-A Records, co-written by Denny and Brian Potter. Lambert & Potter also co-produced the Four Tops hit along with Steve Barri. |
