I have a promo 45 on this, with both a listed and actual time of (3:00) on both the mono and stereo sides. Both sides state "EDITED VERSION" on it. Mono deadwax says POL 30293-M-1D-DJ; stereo side the same, except substitute "S" for the "M".

Finally, with some assistance, tracked down a seller who had a DJ copy of this 45 on Polydor. As Jim mentioned, it clearly says EDITED VERSION on the label. Stereo side is red, mono side is white.

In reality, it's not an edit at all, merely an early fade starting at 2:52 with the song completely faded out by 3:00.

My promo is red label stereo/white label mono 3:00 version, but makes no mention of it being an edit, though the matrix # is printed right on the label.
Odd that they put a red label on one side, any other Polydor promos I have from that era are white label both sides.

I have just acquired a second different promo 45 for this song. On this copy, no "edited version" is included. This 2nd copy is mono, has a white label, only includes "Jungle Fever" on one side of it, is confimed as Polydor 15030, and has a listed time of (4:22) and an actual time of (4:21).

Bumping up for Ed (see post #2 above for the promo fade info).

After comparing both the stereo and mono sides of the Edited Version promo 45, the mono is a simple fold-down of the stereo side. I also pulled my stock 45, which is mono, and I'll try to do an A/B shortly to determine if the mono side is a dedicated mix or if it's also a fold-down.

Finally compared the stock 45 to a fold-down of the stereo, and they match. Strangely, the only CD copies I can find (at least at the moment) have a very pronounced ground hum and buzz that gets worse toward the end. Does anyone have a CD that doesn't have the buzzing/hum? I managed to use noise reduction to get most of it out, but perhaps there's a clean transfer not based on Soul Hits Of The '70s Vol. 7.

Also, did this song get a lot of top 40 airplay? Considering it's an instrumental and went top 10 on the Hot 100, it's quite pornographic!

The following CDs all use the same analog transfer as Rhino's Didn't It Blow Your Mind Vol. 7 (1991):
  • Rhino's cheapie Seventies Smash Hits Vol. 6 (1993) - digitally identical

I remember a local station, WJET, playing it in 1972. But,
it may have been night play only and for a short time.

There are a number of markets where it went to #1,
according ti the ARSA site. St. Louis, Hackensack and San
Francisco. In my part of the country, it got to #3 at KQV
Pittsburgh and WIXY Cleveland.

It was certainly played by WPTR in Albany, I don't remember if it was on WTRY. There was a DJ on WPTR who would tell listeners that he refused
to play it, so stop requesting it, not because it was pornographic, but because it was terrible. They only played the long version. I called to
thank him. As far as airplay, it didn't last long, it was on and gone. Never played as an oldie. Probably charted that high because it sold well
enough to make up for spotty airplay.

It sure got a lot of airplay in Boston, particularly on
WRKO. I just went thru my old surveys and it spent 6 weeks
on their top 30, peaking at #2 (#2 in as many ways as you
want to take it).

I agree, it was a terrible "song".
I don't think we played it where I worked at the time.

I don't think the song is terrible, but I wouldn't play it with my elementary-aged kids around. (I don't want them asking questions!)

As a side note, the person who did the score for Napoleon Dynamite "borrowed" the opening drums for one of the songs in the movie. It's not a direct sample, but you can clearly tell the intention was to copy the beat from "Jungle Fever."
