I was just catching up on several years' worth of posts on the https://www.radiodiscussions.com/ - Radio Discussions forum, and ran across a couple of dubious claims in https://www.radiodiscussions.com/threads/singles-that-are-hard-to-find.659352/post-5973220 - a post from 2014 that made me do a double take:
I also wish more stations would take the time to find & use the top 40 edits/remixes instead of album cuts. Many times, the vocals & production on the singles was much better than on the original cuts. I like all the tweaked elements that made many much more pop friendly. A couple of single edits I like for little reasons from the 80s, that aren't usually heard are Tom Petty's Freefallin (the single had tons of reverb/echo on the chorus that the album version doesn't & I haven't heard it in years.) Also, The Clash Rock the Casbah where the single mix holds out & echoes the "jive" lyric. John Waites Missing You is another with great reverb vocals on the radio edit that's never heard now. |
I have to wonder if this person is just misremembering. I don't think there were special single mixes of Free Fallin' or Rock the Casbah. Does anyone here know what he's talking about?

There is a 45 or single mix of the Clash. The database lists
several CD's containing the 45 mix.
I'm intrigued Tom Petty's Free Fallin'. Does anyone know if
there was a different mix issued on the promo CD single?

If you’re curious, you can stream the single remix of “Rock the Casbah” on
US streaming outlets, incl. Apple Music. It’s often labeled as the ‘Bob
Clearmountain 12” Mix’, but it was the main 45 version as well.

Oof... The album version of "Rock the Casbah" is all I ever hear on radio anymore, but the single version is what I had in my playlists. I feel like an idiot for not noticing the difference!
As for "Free Fallin'", I wonder if it was just a matter of radio adding lots of dynamic range compression? That would make the chorus echoes louder. But it'd still be happening on radio today too.

iHeart's Bill Cahill, a contributor in the forum here, has
often programmed single mixes and versions for the iHeart
Classic Hits formats.

There's quite a bit of echo effect on the chorus on the
album version of "Free Fallin'" and that's all I ever
remember hearing on the radio.

I can confirm Spotify has it as 'Bob Clearmountain Mix'.
