There's a version of Spanish Eddie by Laura Branigan that
has an intro of a crowd roaring. Is this a special version
or an LP Version on a different pressing?

It's an edit of the

https://www.discogs.com/master/102091 - 1985
"Vocal/Extended Remix Version"

that was first released on her

https://www.discogs.com/master/102130 - 1995 "Best Of"
CD ,

then on her south african

https://www.discogs.com/master/2310925 - "Back in
control" CD in 1999 .

Note that the version you're referring to is only present
in the physical copies of her 1995 "Best of" set.
The ones on streaming platforms (Spotify, Deezer, Qobuz,
Tidal, etc) play the regular album version. Weird.

Thanks cristianmdp. I've wondered about that song. I always
thought it may be an LP version but I listened to the LP
version and it was the same as the 45.

Has the full 12" version of Spanish Eddie been released on CD? Those 2 seem like edits from the way you worded it.

No. Just unofficial (bootlegs), like this one:

https://www.discogs.com/release/14156662-Various-Maxi-
Dance-Legend-Volume-2

Excellent quality, but still vinyl sourced.

The release of an expanded edition of her 1985 album
"Hold Me", through Cherry Pop, has been cancelled because
of most tracks licensing that were intended to be
included on the set were denied by Warner/Atlantic US
(this remix included).

I heard the same thing about Cherry Red not being able to license the 12"
recordings from this album. Another nice one is "Maybe Tonight". (And
"Spanish Eddie" is one of my favorite Branigan records.) I guess I'll
only have my vinyl transfers. What's strange about all this is that her previous
deluxe edition reissues all included the 12" versions of the singles from those
albums. So I don't get why the 12" versions from this album would be
unlicensable.

No idea either. I know for a fact (friend working for
Cherry Pop as project manager) that, usually, US-based
acts (meaning those who signed to US labels), are the
hardest to get their material licensed to a UK label like
Cherry Pop. The masters usually are in the US and the
rights are controlled by US-based companies.
I've seen how a lot of previously released material
(remixes for example) were denied to Cherry Pop for
release, no given reason. Just "no". End of story. It
seems it works that way.
The funny thing is that for "Hold Me" they approved a
handful of tracks that are unreleased to this day. Still,
the project is shelved for now because its most important
remixes were denied.
Lucky for us Branifans, we managed to find a true
treasure in a very rare, UK promo, and now we don't need
for a proper release (it was denied anyway - but we have
it now). "One Day", from the movie "Violets are blue". It
was going to be part of the "Hold Me" expanded edition.

Truth is as long as they don't approve the release of its
remixes, I doubt it'll happen. They may skip the album
and try with "Touch". I don't know.

Wow, I didn't know there were a handful of unreleased tracks for her "Hold Me"
album. I'll bet there were some good ones in there. But yeah, hopefully they
can get the 12" mixes licensed for release.

"What a woman wants" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=zwDtE3-teyw) was part of the "Hold Me" album sessions
and it was left out of the album. The final version of it
was included in an early test pressing of "Hold me".
There are a lot of demos she recorded (that we know of),
and tons throughout her career we know about, that didn't
surface yet.
Well between her "Meadow" project and her venues
alongside Cohen as backup singer, she'd live out of
recording demos.

I don't know what's the real issue with her past
recordings not being released. No idea who own the rights
to all that.

Her 1981 album seriously need to be released
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnDg81x6qio)

It's crazy in my eyes that such amazing vault has not
been properly released. But in the end it all comes down
to licensing issues (and in some very small cases, lost
masters).

Cherry Pop is well known for using remastered vinyl rips
when masters are nowhere to be found (they even state
this in the liner notes ever since buyers started to
realize not all the release's tracks were taken from
master tapes).

Do you know if they now generally announce that on any CDs that take
bonus tracks from vinyl? Or is it something where they just mentioned it
once (or a few) times.

I'll check out that other song. As far as Laura's 1st (unreleased) Atlantic
album, what I call "Branigan 0", there was a track listing somewhere, and I
found the 5 unreleased songs on Youtube, and of course, the 5 that were
released on Gold Legion as bonus cuts from master tape. It was a nice
album, though the unreleased songs weren't as good as the 4 or 5 that
were released (as A or B sides).

I don't know if they print that information in all the
cases. I assume they started doing it because of
complaints they received.
Of course they try to avoid including vinyl transfers,
but if masters were destroyed or in very bad shape, I
know for a fact they remaster vinyl rips. Yes.
In my opinion (beside the commercial cuts from Branigan
"0") are "I'm just warmin' up" and "Don't close your eyes
tonight".
Just in between Cohen & the recording of this, her first
solo album, she did a concert in Germany (1979) where
covered some awesome songs. Some are posted on Youtube
(video format), and a few in audio format.

Thanks for the info Cristian. Speaking of Branigan recording (live concert)
covers early on, Sheena Easton recorded covers (in a live concert or TV show,
released on Laser Disc and possibly VHS) called "Act One" (which is on
YouTube). It contains He's a Rebel, Out Here On My Own, & Billys Joel's The
Entertainer (And I also thought she sang LRB's Help Is On Its Way. But I see it's
not on Act 1. I think it was probably on a Cherry Red recent deluxe
edition release of Sheena's 1st album with a live concert DVD as a bonus disc.)

Cristian, what songs did Laura do covers of in that Germany 1979 concert?

Crazy about Sheena as well down here. I like the Act I
special. It's really nice. Her concert at the Hollywood
Bowl is a complete treasure to me.

You need the complete set of the german concert?
I have the info somewhere. They're all covers.
"I will survive", "Emmanuelle", "I love the nightlife"...
even a song she wrote she plays at the piano.
Let me look for complete info on the concert. She was
signed after that concert. Atlantic Records
representatives were there. She came back to America to
sign a record deal thanks to what they saw there. You can
see some complete performances of it on youtube. Let me
look for the complete setlist (it even included an
interview (dubbed in german) and an acting part where she
recites some story.

cristian, I have that 1995 "Best of" in CD format and mine just has the
regular "Spanish Eddie". From what you're saying, it sounds like the
extended version is on it?? If you have a "Best of" CD with the extended
Spanish Eddie, can you say what country released it? Maybe it's an import,
and if so, maybe I can find it on the internet, as it sounds like a legit (not
bootleg) CD if it's a variation of "Best of" for another country.
