Though it barely cracked the Hot 100, the song Nick Of Time
by Bonnie Raitt was a moderate success in the Boston radio market at the time. Does anyone have the promo cd single or promo 45? The promo 45 states a duration of 3:44 and the promo cd has no track duration listed and whoever posted it on Discogs did not bother to list the track time from a cd player. I initially thought it was a printed track duration error but then remember the song playing faster on the radio. Can anyone confirm if the promo version is pitched faster, a remix or an early fade? ------------- Rick |

I'm curious about this one too as I carry the song in my

The versions released on the CD TM Century HitDisc (799A -
837A), described a shorter time than the album version (3:52), but I don't have those CDs and I can't corroborate this information, maybe another member can. This may pose more questions than it answers. My Capitol
CD, CDP7 91268 2, Nick Of Time, runs 3:49 as does my 45 RPM single, as does an English E.P. 'Good Man, Good Woman', Capitol 7243 8 80151 2 7. 'The Best Of Bonnie Raitt on Capitol' CDP 7243 5 90491 2, is not only speeded up by a few seconds, but clocks in at 4:04 and that makes it significantly longer. -Bill. |

I have a few files on the hard drive (so I don't know the exact sources), but all play at the same speed. All of the fades start in the same place, but the tail of the fade is shortened or truncated on a few of them.
I'm willing to bet that the difference in timings is due to where the fade is truncated. I grabbed a YouTube dub of "Nick Of Time" from The Best Of Bonnie Raitt On Capitol 1989–2003, and it runs 0.37% slower than the Nick Of Time album, which is real but insignificant. But the tail of the fade goes on about 30 beats longer than the Nick Of Time album, which is quite real and quite significant. The fade is over 30 seconds long on The Best Of Bonnie Raitt On Capitol 1989–2003! I have the 1990 Hot 100 hit running 3:50. Since it is 1990, one has to turn to the cassette for that era. That appears to run 3:52. I think I might have solved the mystery. I have an old
cassette tape that I made back in the early 90's that has this song on it and most likely from the promo cd during my radio days. It does run faster than the LP version. I think this is a similar situation to Peabo Bryson "If Ever You're In My Arms Again" where the radio version was sped up to appeal to top 40 radio. Maybe if someone on the forum has the promo cd single they can confirm. ------------- Rick |

The actual time on HitDisc 799A is 3:44. Keep in mind that many of the HitDiscs around this time were mastered from vinyl. ------------- DJ L. |

cd and the single version is indeed pitched faster for a track duration of 3:47 instead of the LP speed and duration of 3:50. ------------- Rick |

The version included on the TM Century album (799A), has a real running time of 3:42, i'm not sure if it's a version that runs faster than the album version or has some editing. If you go to youtube, the official video matches this promo
single regarding speed and length. I have no idea where the 4:04 version that is on her greatest hits comes from. Could be the original was trimmed down for the 1989 cd and all pressings at that time and left in tact for the hits album. Just a theory, not fact. ------------- Rick |

I can confirm that the promo CD single runs exactly 2.0% faster than the LP version. All else is basically the same.
The very tail of the fade on the promo CD single runs about 5 beats longer than the version I have on Time-Life's Rolling Stone Collection 1988-1989, but I don't know if the Time-Life disc shortened the tail of the fade from the Bonnie Raitt full-length CD. ------------- There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one http://www.crapfromthepast.com" rel="nofollow - Crap From The Past . |
