A 1981 European Hit, I actually heard this in the 1982-1984 period but not on the radio. It was played in my school's assembly at that time.

If anyone has any background on this (shoutout to Ron) would much appreciate it including length and the correct 45 version (which I think runs 3:29)

For those unfamiliar with the song, refresh your memory

I actually have this 45 on an import somewhere in my
storage garage!

I recall this being played in Canada, and my version runs 3:16, and the stated
time on the UK, NZ and CA 45s is 3:17. Unfortunately, YouTube video timings
are all over the place. Hope ed finds his 45 among the storage!

You recall the Ottawan version being played in Canada? I only
recall the remake by Sway, which reached #7 in 1988.

Sway was a female trio of veteran Canadian session singers
assembled solely to record this song. In spite of it being a
top 10 hit in Canada, it does not appear that the Sway version
was ever released in the US or that Sway ever recorded another
song.

The Ottawan version turned up on a Canadian current-hits compilation from 1989 called Hit Wave (PolyTel).

I'd always assumed it was a Canadian hit around that time, but never looked into it in detail.

Now that I think of it, as per your suggestion Paul, it likely was the Sway
version in 1988 I heard, as that would have been the time period where I
was visiting Club Meds and the song was played in Canada! I actually MUCH
prefer the Ottawan version, which I have on a 1991 VA CD "Sun Jammin'"

Looking around on YouTube, it appears that some 45 versions
run about 3:15-3:17, which is simply the original recording
(and speed) faded early. However, some 45s run about 3:11-
3:12, which is the same version (early fade) sped up about
2.5%. 45cat lists times at 3:11 and 3:17 for various 45
versions of the song. So, maybe it was sped up for some
countries and left at the original speed for others?

The version on PolyTel Canada's Hit Wave (1989) runs 122.9 BPM throughout. It's a live drummer playing to a click track. It runs 3:15 here.

All the other versions I have are pretty close to 123 BPM.

Richie,
I have the song on a Sony/Risky Business CD called "The
Ultimate Party Survival Kit" ... it runs (3:14) on this
disc.
I always assumed that was the 45 version. I checked
45cat, and seems it was never released in the U.S. as a
45. But from other countries, I saw listed times ranging
from (3:14) to (3:17) ... so it seems that's the overall
45 version for most countries.

BTW, other DJ's told me back then this was a "Club Med"
song. Folks in the 80s would vacation at Club Med and
come home knowing how to do the dance that goes with this
song. I saw it a hundred times at all the parties I DJ'd
in the 90s. (Along with the classic dance "Electric
Slide" that was all the rage back then. Oh and let's not
forget The Chicken Dance...LOL) Does anyone still do
these dances at current parties? I have no idea.

The Chicken Dance still pops up fairly frequently.
Electric Slide once in a while, but now it's more of a line
dance...not sure what it was back then.

I've been DJ'ing for a while now and I always make sure to
have those songs ready to go if need be.

For the record, I remember those Club Med commercials. I
prefer the 1987 Sway version of the song, but at some of
the dance parties my wife and I have attended, the Ottawan
version seems to be the go-to version whenever it pops up.

For a number of years, the Cupid Shuffle and The Wobble
have been big line dances along with The Cotton Eye Joe
from the Rednex and the Electric Slide from Marcia
Griffiths. Equally as much, I find brides will put all of
those line dance songs on a do not play list.
