When I was a kid I listened to an LP,
The artwork was great for all to see, When I was a kid I listened to a 45, They were unique but terrible for a long car drive, Then when I got older I took a risk, Got hooked on the ease of a CD and the clarity of sound, Until 2001 when Itunes came out and ultimately found, That people would settle for an inferior quality digital download copy, As the CD single disappeared by 2015 and the releases were sporatic and sloppy, ITUNES kept updating and taking the fun along with the ease, Some people still loved cover art and used ITUNES for what they please, Even though to this board the CD will always be king, The news that Apple killed ITUNES for some will only bring, Sadness that the software of their youth is gone replaced by apps and Spotify streaming, At least they haven't discontinued the CD yet or are we fooling ourselves and just dreaming? https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/apple-is-final ly-killing-itunes-842750/ Edited by PopArchivist |

I used to love iTunes many years ago, it got me to stop
using Windows Media Player, but it progressively got sloppier with many of its updates, at least to my liking, as well as bugs that have to date not been fixed. Cover flow disappearing was indeed one of the most disappointing because it was the best way to look at artwork. Not sure I'll miss it that much in its present form, it'll take some time to get used to the standalone music app is all. |

Reading further what it basically means is that in a new update Apple
will be splitting the (large and very bloated) app into separate pieces. They have been this way for ages on iPad/iPhone/iPod so this makes sense. They will not stop selling downloads. Vinyl 45RPM records, invented and launched over 74 years ago are still made and sold and Apple makes a vast amount of money from those sales. What is being removed is the iTunes programme which is then being replaced by something else to do the same job. That’s the bit hidden behind the attention grading headline. |

RIP iTunes. |

You know you're really older when you think that younger singer Jesse McCartney's related in anyway to former Beatle Paul McCartney.

Despite things being 'retained', the writing is on the wall.
It's pretty clear where Apple (and the industry) is going, but a wholesale cancellation of iTunes would create a massive PR backlash from millions of users who have spent billions (?) of dollars over the last 15 years. But by phasing this out in stages over a couple of years - with rebranding and upgrades - burying the interface in a Mac Finder - it's a 'soft cancellation'. I really don't think that after this, record companies, etc will be making iTunes (Music) any sort of priority moving forward. Edited by jebsib |

What percentage of music downloads are via I-tunes? Who
are the other major players other than Amazon? I was under the impression that I-tunes had the lion's share of that business, with many exclusives. If they're phasing it out, that doesn't bode well for downloads in general. |

Just like the death of vinyl and CDs, this death of
downloads is GREATLY exaggerated. I have a feeling that the iTunes store will still be around (in one form or another) for many years to come. Even if iTunes were to close up shop tomorrow, I'd still think that anything that was already purchased and placed on your hard drive would still be there (provided you have everything properly backed-up, of course). In my line of work, I've always had all the digital
music in my library on my actual hard drives. It's mainly because some locations I travel to the wi-fi accessibility is spotty at best. If I relied on complete streaming of music (which it's illegal for me to do) I'd be out of business. I've never depended on iTunes other than the out of the ordinary song requests I get (my clients musical tastes are expanding thanks to suggestions via Spotify or Pandora listening.) I then download the purchased song(s) to my hard drives. Edited by eriejwg |

The breakup of iTunes will only happen for the Mac on
their new operating system coming this fall. iTunes will still be around for Windows users. No one will lose their music. |
