PTG/Vinyl Masterpiece from the Netherlands often uses
needle drops and frequently does not get proper
licensing. However given the rarity of most of the
material and the reluctance of the majors and indies to
reissue certain material, it's a bargain. In many
instances, the masters are gone and I don't think these
titles are coming back around.

extended version does have this part though, so you'd
just have to paste that line into the second chorus.

I have to disagree here. The 12" single is a different
mix. The reverb on the drums is slightly different.
Also in the opening of the 45/LP version in the first
few beats there is her "baby talk" vocal effect with an
echo on it. That vocal part is nowhere to be found in
the 12" single mix. So you can't make the correct
single version from it. You can make a remix-edit that
is structured like the single. A lot of the later
parts of the song are very similar in the 2 mixes. But
it will never be the exact single version.

We tried on 2 occasions to license it for the Eric
Records 80s CDs. Both times got an immediate decline.

From what I was told, she never wanted to record it in
the first place. She co-wrote it with Stephen Bray and
was intended for Madonna or any other artist to
record. But Atlantic pressured her into singing it
herself. After that she was unhappy that it basically
sounded like a Madonna copy and she took a lot of flak
for that in reviews.

Despite its success and despite recording for a few
more years she left the recording side of the industry
in the early 90s with no desire to return and no
desire to ever see the song reissued - anywhere.

That was the info I was given.

Also, the 12" version is a remix so it cannot be
edited to make the 45/LP version.

Very Dave Clark of her to do so.
Strange that she doesn't want it out there considering
that its not like the song is hard to find on the
internet thanks to YouTube. Also, MTV and VH1 played it
in rotation even long after it fell off of the charts.
It's even highlighted on one of the photo pages in my
early 90s edition of Whitburn's Top 40 Hits book. She
could definitely be making money off of her claim to
fame even if she dislikes the song. There's many
artists who hate their hits but I bet they wish they
owned the rights to them.

Lunar Laugh,

Even outside the United States Baby Love doesn't even make it on any compilation CD's. If you think about it, it is incredible that if not for its release on Curiosity in 1986, 34 years later we would still be waiting for it to come to CD. Even Hold Onto My Love made a UK compilation disc.

Some artists don't care about making money apparently but I would nominate this song for being the most elusive on 80's comps. During that Time Life/Rhino era they couldn't even get the licensing to it. I am sure if they could, they would have chosen it for their Sounds of the Eighties or various Rhino 80's comps.

Which is why in the original post I made it clear that it is only available domestically on her OOP album. I should know it was the only place I found it on CD. Otherwise if any other compilations in the US had it you could easily spot it on Discogs. The only other two places to find it are on comps released before 1990 in the Netherlands, which I can only presume are digital clones of the LP version found on her 1986 album.

You can chalk this one up to another top 10 hit from that era that should be on a CD comp but isn't....

So, as a follow-up... Has anyone found this 45 version?

Or, is it possible to recreate the 45 from the 12" version?

I pulled out my Disco Giants CDs and was curious after hearing the 12."

The LP and 45 versions are the same, as far as I know. Earlier in the thread, there was a question as to whether the 12" version could be edited down to match the LP/45, but Mark stated that the mixes are different.

The first thing I noticed in comparing the 45 RPM record, Atlantic 89417, and the version on the Dance Traxx 2 CD, is that
in the first 3 seconds of the 45 RPM single, is the sound of a 'Baby' that is not on the Dance Trax 2 CD. I come up with
4:05.2 for my single, silence to silence. Another shocker for me, is that in my record store, we sold 73 copies of this and
I don't remember it!! As I've said before, I've forgotten more than you'll ever know. -Bill.

Bill, that is because the version on the Dance Traxx 2 CD
is the "Vocal Extended Version" which does not have the
"baby" sound.

Correct Aaron. There is no difference between the 45 and the LP version. The 12'' as stated by MM cannot be made into the 45/LP version. Amazing its 2025 and the 45/LP is only available on the CD Curiosity from 1986.
