Browsing around the net, came across this page for Sam Neely and the album, Sam Neely 2. It appears its been reissued from Taliesyn music with bonus tracks, including "You Can Have Her." Anyone have knowledge of the quality of the CD?

John, I ordered this CD directly from Taliesyn last year, and they are vinyl dubs. Sounds to me like they used nice-quality LPs, augmented by some "standard" noise reduction software, but the result is nowhere near what many of the folks on this Board can achieve. As a result, I still consider "You Can Have Her" as a "don't have on CD" item on my list, despite owning that CD. I believe the CDs are actually "unlicensed from A&M/Capitol" bootlegs, done by Sam's family (Sam died around two years ago, as I recall.) For fans of Sam's music, I imagine these otherwise-not-on-CD collections are fine. But for most of our purposes, they are a no-go.

Thanks Jim for your input. Looks as though you'll save me some $$$ and others as well. A shame that this song is not yet available.

I just noticed tonight that Pat has recently included that earlier-referenced Taliesyn CD in his database, but without any indication/notation that it is from a vinyl dub. The source on my CD was/is clearly vinyl. I'm wondering if perhaps Pat owns a 2nd pressing of this CD, which may use a tape source, or if it was just an db oversight that failed to note this fact.

After hearing some of the tracks on the above Sam Neely
CD's, i am not convinced that all the tracks are sourced from vinyl, including "You Can Have Her". That does not mean i am stating i think they are good tape sources. I am stating that i am not hearing some subtle things that i would hear in a processed vinyl dub. It is also possible that the high (too high) level of noise reduction was applied to remove excessive hiss. (For example, if reel to reel tapes were used, or the family had high generation tape copies.) Some of the bonus tracks ARE from vinyl, and they contain the proper tell-tale signs of vinyl dubs. So, for now it's my opinion that some tracks were from noisy tape, others were from vinyl. Sounds to me like the LP tracks weere from [hissy] tapes, and all the bonus singles from 45's. Either way, i'm glad to have any source for some of these tracks, as it seems the major labels involved obviously have little interest in re-issuing them (if they have the right to.) MM |
